Interesting... that's going really far back if true. I didn't expect that at all.

Boy with a Moon and Star on His Head (1972) An acoustic magnum opus, "Boy" has one of the most fleshed-out fantastical stories Steve ever told in his songs. Given the scope of the work and in order to keep the tablature compact and readable, I had to forego some of the intricacies of how the song is played since it can vary a little bit from verse to verse, motif to motif. In the latter half, for instance, the filler bits get much shorter each time the riff ends. Overall this tablature should give you a good idea, though, what Steve was aiming for acoustically, and it captures Steve's fingerpicking style quite accurately. Unfortunately, the video reels of only this song are lost from his 1973 ABC Concert (Moon & Star Concert) for some reason (not so for the audio). EDIT: Fleshed out the outro and corrected some formatting error on the site.

Not yet. However, Yusuf's new website is up and the overhauled RedRoom is hopefully launching later this year. This November/December Yusuf is still touring Australia, then New Zealand. I guess the new album won't come out before the tour is over. 2018 is my guess.

New guitar tab: The Tramp (1967)Just Steve’s guitar, bass, and a single trumpet make up all the accompaniment. This is perhaps why “The Tramp” seems closer in style to his later work than most of his other early songs. The transcription wasn’t without issues since there’s so little reference material out there to work with. You’ll probably find that play-wise it’s very Cat Stevens.

New guitar tab: Sad LisaOne of the most beautiful ballads for piano there is, “Sad Lisa” is perhaps as much about a real fan of Steve’s as it is about himself really. The grand piano was run through an Hammond organ amp (called a Leslie) with its rotating speakers giving the whole a more dreamy, watery sound. Steve worked out the main riff upstairs on the piano alone at home until the song eventually started flowing and becoming its very own thing. Capoing up the guitar at the 7th fret gets surprisingly close to the piano original while keeping the whole thing playable. I have also included Alun Davies’ original guitar solo from the Majikat Earth Tour 1976 (capoed and uncapoed version) for the instrumental verse.

New guitar tab: If Only Mother Could See Me Now (Demo)One of those early demos Steve recorded somewhere between NEW MASTERS and MONA BONE JAKON and which he slaved away at East London Recordings. While on the face the song deals with a man’s dream of flying (like an angel), its moral is ever so strongly influenced by Christianity’s guiding idea of perfecting Man by overcoming one’s devilish tendencies and develop into a higher character in order to eventually embrace one’s angelic qualities.

One Day at a Time (2006) has now been added. This marks the first time a Yusuf song made it fully tabbed onto the site, which I had planned to do for a long time.

I find the re-recording of "I Love My Dog" a beautiful, powerful re-interpretation of the original. The electric guitar and its swingy riffs (contributed by Jack White?) are a great addition to the stripped down arrangement, giving the song a completely new vibe. It's a beautiful marriage of the old and the new—I Love My Dog Redux if you will. As to the cryptic message on the vinyl (the letters "BH"), I have no clue. The initials of the Dachshund he found back then stripped down to a lamppost? On second thought, "BH" could be an acronym for the Hebraic phrase B'ezrat HaShem (with God's/Heaven's help).

It's supposed to be a 300-page book written by David Gordon. However, not even the publisher has information on it on their site. I figure it hasn't seen the light of day yet or probably never will.

The 1977 album Izitso received a separate songbook arranged for piano and vocals like so many of Steve's albums. I stumbled upon an anecdote by user Musicat over on the Straight Dope Message Boards (see link) who describes working on the Izitso songbook together with Steve.

Another iconic song and Steve’s first released single. Seven takes of the song require most of the 3-hour recording session set up together with the solo song “Portobello Road,” which takes a mere 20 minutes to cut. Producer Mike Hurst allies “Dog” with a staccato, tympani-and-viola arrangement unlike anything on the pop charts at the time. “I Love My Dog” is an instant success and makes young Steve a star over night. Steve later admitted that the song was heavily inspired by Yusef Lateef’s rather obscure jazz piece “Plum Bossom” from the album EASTERN SOUNDS (1961), and started paying him royalties. As to “I Love My Dog” itself, especially beautiful is the Emaj7 chord as played by Steve in the verses, though the chord might require a little practice to get down (well worth the effort though). Steve’s BBC Theatre Concert (1971) has a fantastic live performance of the song; the video reels helped greatly in transcribing the song with utmost accuracy.

This song works solo at least as well as the full arrangement on the original recording, especially with a classical guitar. The tricky transitions between E minor and D major and the abrupt shift to G major necessitate a shorter, sparser strumming pattern than the original recording with its multiple guitars lets on in order not to skip a beat. If a player wants to learn how to keep rhythm, this one is a respectable one to master. The riff on E minor is a valuable addition to the song.

Cat Stevens didn’t play guitar on the original recording of this song. According to Paul Samwell-Smith, the studio session was set up with “two stereo acoustic guitars put down first, Andy Roberts on one, Alun Davies on the other, Steve [Cat Stevens] singing as an overdub later.” Cat Stevens’ original guitar part (rhythm guitar) can only be had on the demo tape of the song as well as in his various live performances of this song such as his 1971 BBC Theater concert, which this transcription is based on. For Alun Davies’ guitar part, the lead guitar on the original recording (high guitar), see Alun’s Part.

A very uplifting song with a locomotion-like rhythm to it, "Peace Train" requires the guitarist to tuck away the pick very swiftly in order to tackle the riff in each of the chorus lines. The intro, the hammer-ons, and the interlude-like riffs—capturing all the never-before-transcribed intricacies that made Cat Stevens' performances of this song so great was painstaking but well worth the effort.

Note #1: Throughout the song [Csus2] and [Fsus2] are only short hammer-ons. For example, when strumming the F-G-F sequence add a short "F into Fsus2 back into F" hammer-on/pull-off riff at the end of it.
Note #2: Strumming patterns in the tablatures are simplified so as to not make the notation illegible. Throughout the song Cat Stevens freely mutes and palm-mutes F and G major.
Note #3: Chords marked with an asterisk (*) are intended harmonies.

The capo does a lot of the heavy lifting here in making this song sound entirely unique. The interlude was perhaps the most difficult part to figure out simply due to the rapid chord shifts in its latter half. Since the song was only ever part of a compilation album, its lyrics were never officially written down so that unsuspecting fans, much to the dismay of the artist, ended up transfiguring the outro to “We gotta get to Heaven, get a dime” instead of the correct “get a guide.”

The intro and the riff sections of this song were always a mystery until Yusuf started to perform the song live on-stage again, and as such reference material became available for the first time. This goes especially for the first riff, which is difficult to figure out due to the speed with which it's played and even though we always had a general idea how it was done. Both the intro, the riffs, and the outro have never been properly transcribed until now.

This is certainly a song which makes or breaks with the performer's singing voice. The chord transitions of "Don't Be Shy" are probably the most difficult part to master for the guitarist since they occur at more or less unusual times in each bar and don't necessarily always perfectly coincide with the lyrics. It's impressive that the whole song is made up of the three chords of the outro sequence of "Lilywhite." I have also never seen the chords properly transcribed anywhere. The demo of this song, unofficially released on 9 LIVES: SOLO DEMOS ON MORGAN STUDIOS, is sung by Cat Stevens as a most beautiful lullaby.

This song never received the love it desires especially in the riff parts which were fiddly to fully transcribe.

I had been struggling transcribing the intro of "Oh Very Young" for a while now until I finally decided to fully commit to completing the tablature's intro. The result can be seen below. What made this so difficult is that there was little no reference material for the intro and fingerpicking parts of the song, so some of it is guess work on my part.
