I was around 14, when I first heard Cats music. My older sister turned me onto him.

Gosh, I don't remember my exact age...maybe around 13/14?? .....give or take a couple of years. I remember hearing (and loving) Wild World and Morning Has Broken, but honestly since they didn't play his music that much on the radio where I grew up, I really wasn't much of a follower. I didn't even know what the guy looked like until a bit over a year ago! I was very poor growing up and wasn't able to buy LP's or anything like that so I didn't even go into those types of stores. peace and love, Susan

I was 11. The first song I heard was "Peace Train". Hmmmm, that was 31 years ago.... Well, if time keeps creeping up on me so rapidly I may be able to return from the dead and post again here as another user and will click on the 'Funeral' choice. Love, A'isha

I was about seven.
Even today, every time I hear Wild World (esp. after a hiatus of not hearing it for a while), my brain goes back to being that age. It's truly amazing how that works.

I was in 7th grade, so I guess that would've made me about 13. My history teacher played the Tea for the Tillerman album for us for no particular reason. He was young and into music and I guess just wanted to share his interest with us. Hearing Where Do the Children Play really knocked me over. Then when I saw Cat's picture on the album...I just wanted to know more about that mysterious-looking dark haired bearded man with the incredible voice.
I still do remember that day very clearly. And that teacher too...out of all my teachers, I probably remember him the best.

I must admit, I also sometime just have to take that journey down memory lane! And then the tears just FLOW AND FLOW AND FLOW!

It was actually 1969 when I first heard him and knew WHO he was, so that would have made me 13 years old at the time. I DID hear Cat for the FIRST time back in 1967, but did NOT make the connection WHO he was, so I guess the ACTUAL first time I heard him I was only 11 years old. When I "Rediscovered " him (shortly after "Tea For The Tillerman" came out), I was about 14 or 15 years old. This was when someone brought the album to school to play it(maybe the teacher, as I recall). When I later saw him perform LIVE in Los Angeles I was 15 years old, that was in 1971. Hugs,Shirley P.S. It is an ODD thing that I have REAL trouble recalling the date of MOST things that happened to me growing up, but NO trouble recalling those things that involved CAT!

I've been enjoying reading all the responses on this topic! I was 17 when I first heard "Wild World" in 1971 - that song WAS my senior year so I'll always have a particular fondness for it. I remember that I loved his songs long before I saw any photos of him. And when I DID finally see what he looked like, I thought he looked so dark and intense...

Hi Jan! ;D Yes, I TOO really LOVED the guy BEFORE I ever knew what he LOOKED like! When I first heard him in the late sixties, ALL I knew at that time was I loved that "Certain SOMETHING" that I could even THEN detect in his voice when he sang "Matthew & Son"! When I finally saw what he LOOKED like I was ALREADY hooked on the guy, and the fact he was DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS was just the frosting on the cake! Shirley

My daughter, Mary was just talking to me about this subject and she said she was born hearing CAT. Yes, she was and I would sing "Moonshadow" to her as a child. Now Mary says she has always loved CAT but was 14 when she discovered how handsome he is. That must happen when those hormones start kicking in.
Love, A'isha
