I don't know if everyone knows of them or has seen them, but our own Kristian "Workahollis" has 6 teaching/ performing videos of Cat songs on YouTube. I think this is a great idea to actually teach how to play the song you're performing. I am looking for a good quality webcam to start teaching too. I have spent hours learning songs by watching YouTube videos, how much better that the person playing is actually teaching the song too. GREAT job Kristian! His videos include: "How Can I Tell You" "Trouble" "Katmandu" "The Wind" "Maybe There's A World" "There Is Peace" "Boy With A Moon And Star On His Head" (added August 19th) youtube.com/user/workahollisGino

Kristians' Trouble Tab Thank you Christine, Gino, and Kristian. I'm listening to Kristian's cover of How Can I Tell You right now. It's very nice -- one of my very favorite CS songs, too. Kristian, thank you for keeping these songs alive and for these great videos. Also, thanks to you and Gino for the guitar tabs. These are such a great gift to everyone. ~Sun~ P.S. I expected Kristian to have an Italian accent, but he doesn't!

If you have a second guitar player at hand, like, I don't know, Alun Davies maybe (!), the intro to "How Can I Tell You" is a little bit easier to play with capo on 7th fret.

Yes, I play it completely different than Kristian from the start and I think it is a little easier too. I strum EM, bar A, and then I bar the 7th fret with my finger and play it just like Alun, then the rest of the song I play in the first position with a combo of Cat and Alun's parts and the bass line. I also play it fingerstyle. But like I was telling Kristian, the advantage of seeing different ways of playing a song is it gives you more options to go to when you're performing. glaucus, Do you still play guitar? Like watching Kristian's videos, I'm always trying to learn something new from other players. Gino

Thnks for the response everyone. I just was told by Gino that there was this thread. I'll try to make them all from now on teaching videos. I'm trying to do the songs like Yusuf would have done them minus Alun. I also try to make sure my hands are both visible so others can understand what I'm doing. If there are any requests for any songs someone would like me to try to post as instruction let me know. PS anyone know how to make the videos longer that 10 min. My time ran out last time. Soon I'll probably do In The End. I've got that down pretty good. This is all minus the piano, precussion etc.

The YouTube videos are fantastic. Just what I need to help me figure out some of Cat's wonderful creations. Been using the Acoustic Masters, which is helpful, but the visual is the best for me. Great Job! Any chance of doing Boy with Moon & Star?

I know that song and it's pretty easy too. The main riff is the only thing to get down, after that you're just picking chords.
RIFF: (Note - the 3rd finger stays on the 2nd string at the 3rd fret during the entire riff).
Play D chord, pick 4th and 2nd string at the same time, then 3rd string, then 1st string.
Lift 1st and 2nd fingers off 3rd and 1st strings keeping 3rd finger on 2nd string second fret (still keeping shape of "D" chord) and pick 3rd and 1st strings "OPEN", hammer and pull off 3rd and 1st string at 2nd fret.
Place 4th finger on D string at 4th fret and pick that string and 2nd string with 3rd finger still on 3rd fret at same time.
Pick 1st and 3rd strings "OPEN"at same time, Bring 1st and 2nd fingers down onto 1st and 3rd strings at 2nd fret and pick at same time and then you're right back at the beginning playing the "D" chord the same way I said to play it in the first line, and it just repeats.
Chords to verses: A gardener's (D) daughters stopped me (G) on my way (D) on the day (G ) I was (A) to wed (D - play riff twice) it is you (Em) who I wish (G) to share my body (Em) with (A) she said (D - play riff twice). This repeats with each verse.
This is a very easy but great sounding song to play and sing. Great choice SirBungus, and I know what you mean about learning best from the visuals.

that's an easy one. Just post videos on you tube and we may be able to create a majicat folder or maybe a link page on this site directly to you tube with URL. Though I don't know how but it's possible. You guys have all seen my ugly mug it's time to see some other Majicat faces up on you tube. I'm waiting on a better recording device(USB) and then I'll do Moon and Star. Oh I'm american but live in Aviano italy. I'm in the air force. Been here since 2000. That's why no accent. Ciao

Vivian, If you ever want to give it a try, I can send you the chords to "How Can I Tell You". There's only 4 very easy chords in the whole song and it would be lots of fun to learn. Who knows, you just might get hooked.

What would you suggest for a beginner? ~Sun~

I would suggest an inexpensive classical guitar. Today you can find a good selection of decent quality classical guitars made in China and Korea for about $80 - $120. I bought my son one a year ago for $110, and paid $125 for an Epiphone Classical about 3 months ago. It is a much nicer guitar for an extra $15. I suggest a classical guitar for beginners because they are easier to play when you're just starting out. Most music stores carry these.
Seriously, if anyone wants to learn to play, we can post easy Cat Stevens songs here. I can think of a lot of his songs that don't have more than 5-7 chords in them.

Is it like "epiphany" or "epi - phone" (like telephone)? Thanks, Gino

It's pronounced: "Eppi (both short vowels) - phone" like telephone.
They're named after guitar maker Epaminondas Stathopoulos whose nickname was "Epi" and "phone" is the greek word for sound. "Epi's sound".
Sun, are you entertaining the idea of picking up a guitar? I have decided to start a thread of Cat songs made very easy for anyone who would like to start playing guitar.

Gino Thank you for the wonderful explanation, Gino. I am not thinking of picking up a guitar immediately. I am thinking of going to the music store and looking at some guitars. I will definitely read your new thread. And then I will think about whether it's something I can do. BTW the guitar is my favorite instrument. Whenever I hear acoustic guitar, it stops me in my tracks and entrances me. If there were "other lives" then I must have been a guitar player in one of mine. ~Sun~

I just got my toneport ux2and gearbox line 6 hardware and I recorded Moon and Star. on you tube go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNspE2fVlm8 and have a look at it. Being a web cast it's never as good as it is here in person. I also included playing instructions on another video. Just look under more from this user and you'll see it.

BTW, it was that infamous Crawdaddy article that refers to "music box simplicity": "Cat uses his lyrics to exult, to soothe, to crystallize the unspoken pain between a father and his son. And he does so with a music box simplicity that far too many other artists have tried—and failed—to replicate." Bob Hill ~Sun~

You "guitar guys" probably already know about this, but "just in" case, I thought I'd mention that Justin Sandercoe is having a competition called "The Most Innovative Use Of A Guitar", which looks really fun. You basically have to post a You Tube video of a funny way to use a guitar. Or you can send him a photograph. The prizes look very exciting: Guitar Amplifier Edition Blue 60DFX Yamaha Pacifica 112 guitar 12 sets DR strings Transcribe! software for PC or mac justinguitar set of all products 2 hour Private lesson with Justin A bag of goodies... Closing date for entries is August 30th 2007. ~Sun~
