I am going to get myself a CD of Teaser and then copy it except that version of 'Peacetrain'. I will put this one in place, if it is similar to the plain one we heard earlier. I assume Yusuf read how that early version grates on my nerves and took pity on me. ;D ;D ;D ;D Turan I am too cute sometimes. Looking forward to hear these.

and it's being made available for FREE!! This is what I hoped he would do with some of his recordings...may god bess him..I believe making it free will inshallah not cause any loss of charity funds but will hopefully increase them since people will want to hear all the other gread yusuf islam songs he has already realeased...in addition it will (god willing) maximize the spreading of peace which is what we all want anyway.
thank you yusuf if you read this. May allah bless you and bless us all.
ps: how did you know yusuf was gonna do this? pretty cool.
wassalamu alaikum and peace be onto you, -anwar

This really is lovely news...
I can remember hearing "Peace Train" when it first came out in the '70's. It was so appropriate for the upheaval that the world was experiencing at that time. Now, some 30-odd years later, that song is still appropriate (and not dated at all, amazingly) for the upheaval that we all face now.
Bless his heart... I'm looking forward to hearing the newest version!

Such good news!! And another lovely message from Yusuf. His simple humanistic approach to life is so refreshing...and such a needed voice right now. I'm very much looking forward to the songs. I'm so curious about this Angel of War. It sounds like a remake, but of what ? Ruins? Blackness of the Night? It sounds like Yusuf has been busy

Folks, people have been asking me 'Hey, what is Yusuf doing these days?" Boy, has he been a busy fellow. Now we know what is happening and such exciting news is worth the wait. Now, I am trying to figure out what music format of radio stations I should tune in to to hear the new things. I wonder if they will announce, "Here is a new one from Yusuf Islam." Or will say.."Here is the first Cat Stevens release in 25 years." Or say, "The artist formerly known as Cat Stevens." Or will go through an entire spiel of dialogue to explain the situation. Whatever, it is totally exciting for those of us who have been following this man's life for 30+ years.
Love, A'isha

There is only one station in my area, that will consistently play his music, and that station plays music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I wonder if they'll play a new version of Peace Train with just percussion. Incidentally, a Muslim friend of mine who can be described as a person devoted to God/Allah and his religion, plays guitar and states there is no prohibition against this. He admires Yusuf, but also wishes he could hear him play guitar again. I have no idea who is right here, but my friend seems well versed in the Qu'ran.

It will be nice if they do play the new version of Peace Train. I've grown quite fond of the percussion only music Yusuf has released lately. There is an incredibly beautiful version of Silent Sunlight done by a Muslim gentleman without guitar or piano. In fact I like it better than Cat's. I can only imagine the 'advice' that Yusuf got given his career when he became a Muslim. These are just my own thoughts on the subject, but I think Yusuf's reasons to set aside the guitar are personal to him, what he felt he needed to do in his service to God. I think it is more complicated than 'not being allowed in Islam'. I'm a Muslim and I honestly don't know what is and isn't allowed. And I think if I were to ask I would get a variety of answers. Probably just as Yusuf did. ...kim

I would be willing to bet that if the new "Peace Train" gets radio play, it will be intro'd as performed by "...the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens...". Musically, to the general public, he's better known as Cat Stevens. And "Peace Train" is so intrinsically associated with Cat that it would be natural for the disc jockeys to intro it in that fashion. I'm also equally sure that they'd add that he now goes by the name, Yusuf Islam. It will be interesting to see which stations play the song - I'm guessing the soft rock stations and the oldies stations will air it the most. (A post script - "the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens" sounds so much like Prince's temporary name! In this case, instead of TAFKAP, it would be TAFKAT! )

Brad (this is Brad isn't it? ), From what I've read and heard from the more moderate Islamic scholars, there are no prohibitions for instrumental music in the Qur'an. I don't think the Qur'an mentions music at all. The opinions which state that music is forbidden are based on hadith (written statements of what the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said or did). I'm sure Yusuf has his reasons why he chooses not to play....which may or may not be because of his Islamic beliefs. ;D I wish he would play again too .....I am trying to learn the guitar myself..it's a beautiful instrument.... peace and love, Sakinah

My feeling is you're right , Kim, about it being a personal decision on Yusuf's part not to play the guitar again, rather than any definate directive. I believe he just wanted to play safe and distance himself from his past when he first became a Muslim, to show everyone he was serious about his future and wanted a new life without distractions. He's obviously more relaxed about his past than he used to be, but still very concious that there are still a lot of fans that hope he will return to his old style of music, and he does not want to fall into that trap even now.
I'm sure we are all excited to hear any new music Yusuf produces, as those here at majicat are more understanding than the majority of radio listeners, who have not followed his life since the pop days, may be towards a new release. I wish him a lot of luck with the new release, it will be interesting to see how the public react.

I really think Yusuf could come up with some interesting cool percussive sounds to "fill out" a recording. There are so many possibilites. Even bells and chimes are considered percussive I think.
When he performed Peace Train for the BBC radio show (71 or 72?), it was acoustic and stripped down and very drum oriented. It sounded great. Very unprocessed and organic.
I wonder if he is using Raihan on either of these new versions? Their vocal harmonies are just sparkling. I LOVE them. I was amazed at the richness of sound and the depth Yusuf was able to create on God is the Light.
I'm sure it's a lot more work to record without the customary stringed instruments and keyboards...it requires a different focus, originality, and purity of sound. But I think the results will be fabulous!!

I wonder if Christine could get that new recording of Silent Sunlight done by Dawud Wharnsby-Ali. You guys would just love it, very very beautiful. You don't miss the instruments. There is another song on that CD where Yusuf sings in the background that is just incredible. I listen to these songs as well as others on my numerous long drives. I really have grown quite fond of the no instrument sound. Mind you, I'm a rock-n-roller and I love the sound of a good guitar and piano, but these songs are really great.
If Yusuf plays the guitar again, great. If he doesn't well that's great too.
