I just saw Carly Simon on The Ellen Degeneres Show. Ellen tried to get Carly to tell her the identity of the person in You're So Vain and Carly ruled out Mick Jagger and Warren Beatty, but she told Ellen "That's a good guess" when Ellen asked if it was Cat Stevens.
Anyone else see the show today? I thought "Cat Stevens" had been ruled out for various reasons (this was in a different thread several months or a couple of years ago).
On another note, she sang a nice version of the song, with 2-3 supporting sidemen.

She won't probably going to reveal that.
Its a great talking point for her in interviews.
If I had a chance to ask the cat about it.The question would be
When he first heard "Your so vain". Did he think the song was about him?

Sorry I was studying for a test... yes, that's the video. Well all I can say is Yusuf has quite well taken care of whatever vanity issues existed in the past. I suspect Carly was indeed giving in to Ellen's persistence and had the conversation continued, other names would have been brought up as well. It irked me a bit that it ended there, because to me it left the wrong impression.

She sure is a hard strummer. Maybe she attracted vain men, and all the men she had a relationship with were vain, so I think it was just a way to keep all these vain men guessing. A good way to get even I think. She still has them guessing, and the world.

He looked quite timid and introverted especially in the concert of 1971 , he did not seem to be vain ike Mick Jagger did, so it's strange that he says he was vain...it did not show..

Maybe she was singing about herself! (grew up rich etc) Why do I want to put chewing gum in her hair? I must be jealous...

It was Warren Beatty. His mother is from Nova Scotia. He thought he was God's gift to women! He had everything in the skirt that entire decade and was extremely vain.

She wrote "Anticipation" while waiting for him on their first date. But I guess everybody knows that.

Still looking great. She hasn't lost any of her charisma. Voice still very distinctive.
It would be great to see them together sometime, and perform 'Into White'.
Thanks for the link.

It could be Cat. He is the only one that wore a hat at the time. In one interview he laughed and said that it was probably him but that there was no cause for vanity now. Who cares, it keeps everyone guessing.
Peace

I saw Carly Simon on an interveiw a couple of weeks ago. I really don't think she is good looking Even in the 60's I don't think she was good looking.

I just came across something about this yesterday on google books (who the song is about) - it is from a bio about James Taylor by Ian Halpern, Fire and Rain:
"The most popular answer was always Jagger... 'If you examine the lyrics closely, it's obvious that Carly was singing about her affair with Mick Jagger,' said author Esmond Chouke, who has covered both Taylor's and Simon's careers for over 25 years.. [it] was her way of delivering a final message to Jagger. She was madly in love with Jagger and was devastated that their relationship had ended. Carly is the type of person who always tries to get the last word in, especially after she's been humiliated... When the song was first released, Jagger bragged to his friends that he was the subject of Simon's song. I think that when Simon found out she was incensed and refused to admit that the song was about him because she didn't want to give Jagger the satisfaction.' "

Hi guys
Ive decided that 'You're so vain' is definately about Warren Beatty. He did go out with her when she was very young and he has the Nova Scotia link. Wow she must have had something as she had a stream of attractive, famous men after her.
Peace Margi
