No, I wonder about that too. I still think it is a stage manager talking to him and I think possibly it may have been a reminder to introduce the band. I practically have the DVD memorized. LOL

No, I can't say I have...I have to disagree. People under the influence of drugs can hardly drive, let alone perform a 2hr concert.

I have a question about another part of the concert...just before he sings "Two Fine People" you can hear someone in the background saying something to Cat and he responds with, "I know". Anyone know what this was about? It frustrates me when you can't hear! Thanks Kris, I have tried sooo many times to hear what was said then, just can't make it out. I think it was about the next song, probably with Alun. Like after Sad Lisa, as he walks from the piano, he says to Alun "Two Fine People?," and then nods. But I don't think we will ever know for sure. It's bugged me for ages! lol

What proof does anyone have that he WAS stoned. Were you there with him? These are all speculations and personal opinions. No one knows for sure and no one will ever know for sure, I would assume. I find picking him apart and scrutinizing his every move to be insulting to him and offensive. I personally love the Majikat DVD and find nothing wrong with any part of his performance. It was live and little mishaps were bound to happen which I feel adds to the nuance of the concert. My opinion, only. Have a great Sunday, all.

Well let's see, it was 1976...he was a "Rock Star" and he was wealthy...It is quiite possible he'd had a hit of something....Stoned would be the slang term...

I found him to be over acting his star role on that video. He seemed to be on acid by the way he acted. I wish he would have been more natural, more himself... but he was too busy putting out this "look at me! I'm so cool! I'm so sexy!" pose.
I bet he feels a little embarrassed when he sees that old video, he DOES look a bit silly.
I always admired his music and his image, but at this point in his life, I think he was too overindulged.

He seemed fine to me, in good spirits. Maybe he had something else on his mind at the moment that distracted him. It just doesn't seem like someone on the verge of becoming a Muslim would be getting stoned. It doesn't coincide.

Some where or other there is an article, here or in the old CScom archives, about this. Yusuf was traveling at that time with an oxygen tank and mask and was, indeed, taking 'hits' before he preformed. The article quotes Alun joking about going through customs with this paraphinaelia.

I think he really was taking oxygen. He was always one to take weird and unusual avante-garde paths. Wasn't he really health-minded at that time? Like into yoga?
The way he puts his hand to his face when he realizes he's just introduced the audience twice just looks cute, silly and shy to me. Not stoned. (It reminds me of that clip where he mispronounces "relevant" (I think that was the word). He just about blushes up the whole camera. Adorable!)
I think he was high on his success, personally. Along with that high-horse attitude came the flip side, exemplified by such acts as calling that person (stage hand?) a stupid idiot. He was just high on life in that concert, I think. High on himself. Which made him a bit "lippy" at times.

As far as his "lippy" comments during majicat, well I still think it coincides with his brush with death at Malibu Beach. That concert was likely very shortly after, he had just made his promise to God, and had no idea how he would fulfill that promise. Peace,Vivian

Plus anyone who has had lung problems like he did can certainly use those good hits of oxygen. I had a lot of lung trouble at one time and those benefits are priceless, in addition to the energy it gives you.

I remember reading about the oxygen tank a long time ago, also. It could have been in the David Evans book. I know Alun was the one telling about Cat traveling with an oxygen tank. Cat was always way ahead of the times - now there are oxygen bars. About introducing the band twice - I think he did it the second time just to be silly cause he did kind of mess up the first time by telling the audience that that was enough applause because the band would get a big head, or something like that. I can't remember exactly how it went. I think he may have felt bad that he said that. Anyway, I don't think he seemed under the influence of drugs during the concert. I believe him when he said: "All I take is OX-E-GEN now!" I think basically he has always been a nice person who is kind of shy in certain situations.

Oxygen was a fad that was taking off in the mid 70's, so when he spoke of getting high on oxygen, that is what he meant. There were oxygen bars then. It was a way of clearing your mind. As for the "Have I introduced you to the band?", comment, I place it right along with the"I've never seen an audience before", comment, just a little joking remark made to the audience to establish a rapport. He was very focused and very deliberate ( look at the way he kept playing the guitar and singing without blinking an eye, when the guitar string broke during one of his songs) . The only thing that kept him from being a complete pro was the temper outburst over the microphone being raised, but he calmed down quickly and made a couple of joking remarks about that (" you might see my legs"). Anyway, No, He Wasn't under the influence of any drugs.

ITA. He doesn't look under the influence in that clip. Back then, let's just say... the substance was a lot different and people didn't care whether they appeared influenced in public or not. IMO he was definitely not. As for musicians playing concerts while under the influence, I often wondered how they could do those high-powered performances while under the influence. (Not talking about the drugs of today. Things were a lot different back then.) Some of them could accomplish that and some couldn't. After a Bonnie Raitt concert in 1977 she exclaimed now I'm gonna go backstage and get f'ed up (something she no longer does and hasn't for a very long time). One time at a George Thorogood concert, the Allman Brothers opened for him and if you weren't watching closely you missed Gregg Allman slumping onto the keyboard, being removed quickly and later brought back, the whole thing happened seamlessly Maybe occasionally the former Cat might have done a concert under the influence, but it certainly wouldn't have been to the extent that many musicians did and still do.

I really doubt he was under the influence either. I remember reading an interview once where he said that when he was up on stage, he really didn't know how to communicate with the audience. So he just rambles on. Sometimes saying odd things. Then when he hears it played back, he wondered why the heck he said certain things. I'm sure we all do the same thing.

I was at the Massey Hall concert in Toronto, camped out in front of Ryerson Unniv for the night to get tickets the next day.The concert was amazing, even though the audio was not that good. You could tell he was shy,and was very much against the "establishment".There were about a half dozen photographers gathered at the edge of the stage, and after Cat had made his amazing entrance onto the stage he walked very casually over to them.He commented on the cameras and that they were probally very expensive,he paused for a second or so and then said,"well I really do not give a F*&%k and unless you stop taking pictures and sit down, there will be no concert",well the crowd went nuts with cheering, and the pics and flashes ended, and the best 2 hours of my life began!
