Great photos, Ali looks well considering what he has been through. I'm afraid Christopher Reeve isn't so well thought of here in the 'disabled circles'. Many of the disabled feel he is giving false hope to those with spinal injuries, plus he makes them feel as if their life, as they are, is useless. Many have full and active lives and accept their disability.

I should have thought that he protrayed that people confined to a wheelchair do have full and active lives regardless of their disability. I thought that it would be better for him to be exposed to help people at large embrace 'disabled circles'. And I think that it is extremely wonderful that he is striving so hard to help researchers find remedies and possible future cures. I don't have a disability, and maybe if I did then I could see more clearly what you mean. Surely Christopher is seen as someone who trying to help. Faithfullight

Lucy H, Thank you for sharing the picture! It is wonderful to see that he is happy. Yusuf looks enthusiastic about the World Awards. It is a very sweet picture! And I wonder if the young man behind is their son? Some of you who went to the concert know if that is Mohammed or not. So, please let us know.
Peace and blessing be upon Yusuf and his family.

Faithfullight The disabled feel that Christopher Reeve doesn't accept his disability and needs to walk again to feel complete. It is the same as offering a pregnant woman scanning to detect a defect, so giving her the choice to abort the baby. The disabled want to be accepted as they are and not changed. I have a son who uses a wheelchair and I think I can see arguements on both sides.

The disabled feel that Christopher Reeve doesn't accept his disability and needs to walk again to feel complete. It is the same as offering a pregnant woman scanning to detect a defect, so giving her the choice to abort the baby. The disabled want to be accepted as they are and not changed. I have a son who uses a wheelchair and I think I can see arguements on both sides. I see. Yes, I can see both sides too. I don't follow very closely with Christopher Reeve and I don't know how he really feels personally about his condition. It is sad for him (and others like his situation) to have to adjust their lifestyle when it becomes so different for them, but that doesn't mean that they can't continue to contribute to our world in a big way. Perhaps they may be even more able to contribute to our world because they focus on things that they wouldn't had otherwise. I can imagine the sadness, anger, frustration, etc. when he (and others) are first brought into this new situation. It's difficult to deal with at first that they can't do what or how they used to do, or be like before the accident. It takes a brave person to look beyond what they were and find their path down a new stream. That seems to be a problem that a lot of people do. They look back and see what they used to be or used to live and they can't look forward to who they are becoming and evolving into. I don't see Christopher as a lesser man because of his accident, but I see him as a courageous human being who is trying to make a difference in our world in the path that he is now traveling. I do see a lot of good in his efforts to help find solutions and possible medications to help this type of disability if at all possible. Some people are in situations where medication will help them improve their mobility, etc. It takes a lot of courage to embrace something new, no matter what type of situation it is, and I do respect him for his efforts. I also respect Joni Eareckson Tada. She is a beautiful woman who has written books, recorded songs, and shared her faith all while being confined to a wheelchair. There are many ways of being "bound" (physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, spiritually, etc.) and a fulfilling life is not to focus on the things that bind us, but to focus on the things that will set our spirits free. I think that Joni also deserves the honor of the "Lifetime Achievement Award". This is the lyrics to her song Spirit Wings: Some birds live in cages, They sing a quiet song And like them, I could sing for only you But Lord, your love released me to sing a different song And soar above the captive life I knew.
Spirit Wings You life me over the earth-bound things And like a bird my heart is ...flying free I'm soaring on the song your Spirit brings Oh Lord of all, you let me see A vision of your majesty You lift me up. you carry me on your Spirit Wings
Now when my life confines me, I just look to you And soon my heart is soaring high above Troubles look much smaller from your point of view Lifted up on Spirit Wings of love.

It's not been a bad week for Yusuf, has it? A very successful concert at the Royal Albert Hall. A prestigious venue and virtually sold out. Audience delighted, Cat-fans and Muslims alike. Two days later he's presented with a World Social Award for his humanitarian work, by no less than respected 'Gorby'. Alongside equally respected luminaries like the spirited Christopher Reeve. He then gets home to find 'The Very Best Of Cat Stevens' hits UK #7 in the album chart. This bodes very well!

I really don't think Christopher Reeve is "accepting his disability"! He just has a positive attitude about life! I remember him being interview, a few days after his accident, and yes, he did say he intended to walk again, but if he didn't, he would accept it! Well, he must have! It's been almost eieight years since his riding accident, and yet, he still has a loving wife by his side, and he still has a smile on his face!
Peace,Vivian

Last week several reviews of the World Awards Gala, including a one-hour-summary of the event, were shown on TV over here. I think the presentation of the World Social Award to Yusuf is shown without abridgement. Yusuf is introduced with a lovely film collage of music and docu clips. He is very cute when he's accepting the award! There are many beautiful close-ups of Yusuf and Fawzia and two snippets from interviews. I taped everything I could get hold of! The music show "Beat Club" from the sixties and early seventies is repeated on TV at the moment, and - luckily - in the two shows that were broadcast last week and the week before (from summer and autumn 1967) P.P. Arnold sings Cat's *The First Cut Is the Deepest* and Cat performs three of his songs ~ *I'm Gonna Get Me a Gun* *Come on and Dance* *A Bad Night* So sweet! I've got these performances on the same videotape (altogether about two hours). I'd like to share this videotape with you all and try to get it copied at a photo shop - sorry to say they can't convert it to the US video system. Christine, if you are interested in the tape, and if there's a way for you to convert it to the US format and to put it here on this site so that all can see it, I'd like to send it to you. Love, Sanna

Sanna, there are places here in the states that convert videos to different formats! So, go ahead and send it to Christine! I am sure many of us will contribute the conversion fee, as it can be a little expensive! That would be GREAT to see!
