COOL photo! But what's with the hookah? Seems a bit out of place . . . ? Maybe it's that Yusuf's been influenced by living in Dubai, and in the Arabian Gulf region, men commonly smoke these waterpipes. They use a regular kind of tobacco, which has the same ill health effects as cigarettes, so I doubt that Yusuf smokes one, so it may be just for decoration. In case it's of interest, men in the Gulf region take their families to the beautiful beaches of the "Khaleej", or Gulf, at night (because it's too hot to go in the daytime). They have picnics, the kids play, the men talk and smoke hookahs, and the women talk and drink tea and coffee. Some Gulf men also smoke hookahs in cafes, which kind of ties in with Roadsinger and the video for "Thinking 'bout You", which is filmed in what appears to be a European coffeehouse. Though no hookahs are in sight, European coffeehouses were originally based on the coffeehouses of Turkey and the Middle East - thus the Turkish coffee in demitasse cups and the tall glasses of cool water that we see in the video. Does anyone know if Gabi's picture is of Yusuf's Redroom? Is it in London? Does anyone know what the two rectangular towers are (the ones next to the hookah)? Speakers? Fans?

Some *Americans* smoke hookahs in cafes too; in fact they've just become really big where I live in SW Ohio. A hookah bar just opened up in our little town, and it absolutely amazed me because I can't imagine people in this town smoking hookahs. We're all totally middle-class white bread. I keep saying I've gotta stop in just to find out if they ever actually get any business, and who the heck is going there.
But yes, I asked because I thought Muslims didn't smoke. I'm surprised he'd even use something as a prop when it's forbidden to his religion.
Also I just found out Muslims can't have pet dogs. I guess he doesn't love his dog anymore. ::shrug:: How's that for irony?

Although with the hookah and his pose on the couch, he does sort of remind me of the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland

I guess he doesn't love his dog anymore. ::shrug:: How's that for irony? Yes, good point. The hookahs are so common in the Gulf, that Yusuf probably has gotten used to their presence and doesn't think about the fact that smoking, since it harms the health, may be forbidden. Or maybe he thinks it's harmless as an item to just look at - sort of like a museum piece. I'm a Muslim, and I love dogs, but I just wouldn't have one in my house - cleanliness issues - dog hair, muddy paws, potential for fleas, throwing up on the carpet, to name a few. When Muslims pray, we put our faces on the floor to represent humility before God, so the floor must be very clean - we don't even wear shoes in the house, but it's not that we can't have shoes . We also believe that angels won't enter our house if there's a dog inside - maybe this is related to cleanliness as well, as I think that angels avoid unclean places. Dogs are allowed outside the house, especially as watch dogs. The other issue is that dogs clean themselves - all parts! - with their tongues, and their saliva is considered unclean. (Not to mention that they will eat very disgusting things, such as when they throw up... In my experience, cats, for example, would never do that.) Even when I was growing up as a Christian, we never let our dogs lick us, especially on the face or mouth (yuck!) or eat from our dishes, because we thought that the dog's tongue, mouth, and saliva weren't clean. So, it's a cleanliness issue for Muslims as well.

This is getting *way* off the original topic, and I apologize. But about the dog thing -- I understand what you're saying, dogs can be kind of gross. I used to dislike dogs before; smelly things, always licking you! Blech! But now I've got three of the critters, go figure.
Before that I was a cat person - we have 5 currently, and oh my, these cats do FAR more to mess up my house than any of the dogs ever did. I've owned cats for 20 years, and on my honor, when these die (we'll keep them, we're committed to that) I will *never* own another cat.
The dogs? Well, yeah, there's fur all over, but that's easy enough to deal with. The dogs never pee or throw up in the house. They stay outside most of the time but we let them come in to sleep most nights. Dogs are awesome.

Love the autograph.... (jealous ) Love dogs....(I have 5, 2 sleep in the bed [*gasp* ], and I don't care where they lay, where they lick, what they eat, where they throw up, or where they roll, for that matter.. ) Love my cats....(got 2 with hair outside, 1 hairless inside (none of whom use toilet paper ), and 1 on a couple of album covers! ) And I wanna know how come only the men get to toke on the hookahs? Have to have a little chat on that one. PS Starting to sound like I wouldn't be a very good Muslim. Oh well, guess I'll just hold what I got. Angels......watch your back if you show up at my house!!

Yes, it's the Redroom in London. Guess the white one is a lamp. I'm wondering whether there is a new Redroom in Dubai? And did the peace van move over there too? Nobody objected - I'm the only one, who got these words

I don't think it's a lamp. I think it's a speaker like the other one, pointed in the other direction so the shiny wood surface just looks white. And isn't it funny how closely we're analyzing this photo? Don't we have lives? LOL I'm sure you're the only one that got 'em, lucky lucky lucky!

Yep me too! If I get up there Jane, I'll wave to you! Yeah, right before I get tackled by security! Guess I'll just be content to grab his glasses when they fly off! Gabi, looks like you were the only one Yusuf was "thinkin' bout" that evening. How cool is that? Hey, y'all must be going soft. I figured somebody would give me some guff about the dog thing. Just so happens I love them unconditionally....just like they love me! And about the cat/toilet paper comment....cats clean themselves like dogs do, they walk in litterboxes, shed like crazy, and kill anything that happens to slither, chirp, bounce, or dart their way! But hey, you can't hate a cat for being a cat....I love all God's creatures, great and small! Hookahs, speakers, dog vomit, concert security breeches...how in the world do we go from point A to point... Q?? I wish we could get together in real life! Imagine how lively those conversations would be?? We'd have a blast! ;D Peace......

When I was a kid I lived on 4 acres with three dogs, a bunch of cats, a flock of ducks, and a pony. Read all of James Herriotts' books and wanted to be a vet. It didn't work out, but I still love "All Creatures, Great and Small."

Thinking 'bout You YUSUF Okay, to get back on topic (sort of), here's a quote from Chris Isaak:Source: Chris Isaak Photo Gallery ...the Muslim convert isn't as "stuffy" as his reputation suggests.
Isaak was thrilled when the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens agreed to make a rare TV appearance on his show - and he was stunned when the Muslim convert agreed to sing old hit "I Love My Dog" to his manager's pooch.
Isaak says, "His first hit was "I Love My Dog" and I said, 'Will you play some of it for the dog?' - and he did!
"I think people have this idea that Cat Stevens is very stuffy or uptight because he's a religious guy now, and so you can't joke about anything. He's funny and he was a lot of fun to have on the show."

Yes, it's the Redroom in London... Nobody objected - I'm the only one, who got these words Thanks, Gabi. Really terrific autograph from Yusuf. Oh yeah it is and I keep it like my most valuable treasure Just look don't touch - because there are fingerprints on it People, who still regard him as "stuffy" or uptight, didn't notice how he's changed in the past 10 years. He's kind of "back to earth" now. He's found the right balance of being a religious person and living in the world of today. Just look at the differences between the interview with Thomas Gottschalk in the middle of the 90th and his appearance at Chris Isaaks or Charlie Rose in 2009, which is my favourite interview of the last years. If I hadn't been already, I would have fallen in love with him seeing this
