Oh yeah, I looked at the cover and I thought, well, duh. I just think it's sad to compare it to a trash can! I notice that his set for Roadsinger performances (on TV appearances I've seen, can't remember where, Colbert maybe?) includes a few trash cans. A nod back to the Mona days, maybe?  I think I read somewhere that the original title he wanted for this album was 'The dustbin cried the day the dustman died', or something very similar. In the UK in the 60's a dustman was what we used to call the guy who empties your trash. The illustration is of an old metal 'bin', as we call them, which, as well as general household waste and dust, would be used to empty in the ash from the household coal fires, in the days before central heating. I believe that the record company thought the title too long and just didn't like it, not surprisingly, so Cat picked 'Mona bone jakon', as I suspect the record executives didn't know the meaning of it either, and he was having a little private joke. That's right, he was overruled by the record company. |

Thanks for posting this link. I intended to read this review when I noticed it on the page of the writer's most recent blog. This young man Stephen Lewis writes a wonderful review, filled with keen insights into the music and the persona of Cat Stevens. It makes me want to go back and take another listen to these songs. I like the videos that he intersperses with the review. The "new" (circa 2009) chorus that Yusuf added to the song Lilywhite is beautiful. ~~~~~~~~~~ The added chorus goes something like this (correct me if I am wrong): "No one could save my life that night, only the One true lilywhite." And later in the song: No one could save my life that night, until I saw the lilywhite. No one could walk me to the light, only the one true lilywhite. No one could save my world that night, until the dawn I saw the light. Until the soul bended my mind's eyesight, until I saw the lilywhite. No one could save my world that night, only the One true lilywhite. |

Yup, I read about that. I guess in hindsight it probably would have been a better idea to have the Moonshadow musical part done as an "opening act", then proceed to the actual Yusuf concert.
PS: I corrected the year as you pointed out, and took out my reference to the crowd. Let us say that there may have been a sprinkling of feisty folk in the venue.
Did you go to that show, coolcat?
