Hello Majicatters!!!
What a perfect day today is !!!! North American Tour Dates, and UK Dates!! and a free sample of Yusuf's deep bluesy version of "Dying To Live" www.rollingstone.com/music/premieres/yusuf-islam-cat-stevens-edgar-winter-dying-to-live-20140915
Dying to Live has been one of my all time favorite songs. it has a message that unveils and reveals so much every time I listen to it, and I think that is what Edgar meant for it to do,as he wrote it, and when Yusuf sings it well he gets it! .. he has such an amazing INsight from his journey, and I can hear it in his bluesy vocals .. I've listened to it at least 15 times and am really into it .. when he sings this line "Why am I trying to seeee, when there ain't nothing in sight?" when he sings "see.." it really hit me... and it opens more of the song to really seeing.. I really love his take on the song ... and also the "trill" when he sings up those two notes ..I've been waiting to hear those two high notes and they're so beautiful... like a sincere cry out .. so deep...like as if he is asking the question ..does anyone know what I mean...don't you feel the same. " I totally see and feel what he is singing here ..goes right to my soul .. I hear his soul through the whole song ..as it has been said .. I don't know where the quote is from but.... "one can't sing the blues if they have been drinking milk most of their life .. guess there had to have been some scotch in there" and life's beautiful struggle .. well not my quote but it's someones .. and I agree with it .. and I used to like Scotch ha! ((that's another story)).. guess one of the reasons I love the blues .. I'm so looking forward to hearing the rest of the album in October!! did anyone hear a background instrument in the music I can't put my finger on it .. can you hear a swirl of something through it .. what is it ... it's cool .. I can't pinpoint what it is ... like a rolling vapor sound .. similar to Bowies song "I'd be a slave for you" .. that sound is kind of in that song to, but more ..
well have a beautiful week everyone ... And what a beautiful Autumn we are having .. I think today was a day that a lot of people across the globe were smiling and beaming because of Yusufs soon to be tour and album (God willing) and book launching tomorrow! God bless him and all of you .. have a great rest of the week.. meanwhile what is that instrument in the song xo Aurarisma

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, but I think the background sound you are hearing may be the guitarist's fingers sliding up/down the neck of the guitar. (I'm not sure who plays which instrument in the song.)

Hi! Thank you ... it sounded like that rare sound in David Bowie's song "I'd be a slave for you" on Heathen Album... have you ever heard that? .. I'd love to get your opinion what you might think THAT is ... thanks! I had not heard the song before, so I looked it up: "I Would Be Your Slave" is the title. My first impression upon listening to it was that the instrument you're referring to is a synthesizer. I found a very good interview with David Bowie in which he discusses the album, and the instruments used on it. He played various synthesizers on the album, and from what he says the percussionist would bring in odd items to add various percussive sounds. (Hmm, did not Cat Stevens use a cafeteria tray falling to the floor in one of his songs? yes, yes, yes.) www.concertlivewire.com/interviews/bowie.htmAfter reading through the interview with Bowie, I'm leaning more toward the sound you hear being David playing a synth rather than his percussionist adding something. The sound from whatever instrument it is reminds me of the sound of blood flowing through the veins, like a pulse, or something you'd hear when you get one of those medical tests (Doppler ultrasound?) and you hear that rhythmic "whooshing" sound. It is very interesting. Take the time to read through the entire interview; Bowie discusses "I Would Be Your Slave" at one point, and the story is something I think you would be interested in. As for the sound on Yusuf's track, I still think it's the sound of someone's fingers moving across the strings. With the album being bluesy and back to basics I think they were going for a very natural sound. The piano sounds very crisp, his vocals like he is right in the room next to you, and I think maybe there was direct miking on the guitar and it lends to a natural, you're right there with 'em sound. Perhaps this album does not present songs as glossy, refined gems but rather as "rocks" in their original form.

I feel as though I have been nostalgically transported back to the 1970's as I feel the same giddy thrill that I experienced then, when I was in my teens and we were all preoccupied and filled to brimming with eager and unbridled anticipation for each new Cat Stevens album as they were released. I felt that very same sense of excitement as I pre-ordered "Tell 'Em I'm Gone" via amazon, yesterday! Thank you, Yusuf, for this latest gift of music... each and every one have always proven to be well worth the wait. -Bud

Oh, and I forgot....WHAT, NO FLIPPIN' VINYL?? All this talk of artwork and special stuff...sheesh, that's what albums are for!! My little "old school heart" is broke. Yes I agree I love the texture of the single Yusuf has given us so far .. it is real close and with so much feeling. Blessings to you xoxox Aurarisma

There is a synth effect called the Ventilator which can be used with keyboards or guitar. I suppose you can sample and/or synthesize any sound, which may be what Bowie did. Or use the real thing. Like in "Was Dog a Doughnut?", I think that's a real dog bark that was "sampled" and perhaps put into an early synthesizer. (Either that or Cat had a very well-trained dog who could bark on cue, lol.) love that song... it was so ahead of its time. See how I cleverly brought the conversation back to Cat/Yusuf? I don't think you'll find much synth on Yusuf's new album though. Which is fine by me. A great vocal, some piano, guitar and percussion and you're good to go.

Thanks! and yes Yusuf ..could sing acapella as far as I'm concerned .. the feeling and soul is so there I would hear a background arrangement in my psyche. yes Was Dog a Doughnut was so very ahead of its time I believe it was the first electronicsong wasn't it ? I still can't believe what synths can do!!!! Cool! xoxoxoxoxo Aurarisma

Oh, how I wish I had a music degree. Mine is a degree in biology (which I still love)! I took a music appreciation course in college and learned violin and piano as a child. My music teacher in grade school was so stern that I used to drop the the violins, breaking the necks. My mom wanted so badly for me to become a good piano player, but I wasn't that good. I tinker with keyboards and guitar and otherwise I'm just a music aficionado. Music is so interesting and inspiring!
I'm not sure if "Was Dog a Doughnut?" was the first song to employ electronics but it was a very early example of that musical style. I think it still endures today as a wonderful musical composition. I love his instrumental songs.

oh well don't stop tinkering you are very well versed in music and have a good ear I can tell.. isn'it sad how the teachers use to motivate with fear sometimes ... aww .. Dreams have no expiration date .. !!! Oh and I love Biology and Chemistry .. I always wanted to be a chemist and create magical blends as a kid :)a singer, or musical conductor of an orchestra, or musical director .. whenever I listen to a concert my head is moving and arms .. lol .. it's really too funny like I'm conducting each instrument .. lol .. wrapped up in it all .. yes .. they do say that "Was dog a doughnut" was released even before Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder . so I do believe it is the first altho' he doesn't get as much recognition as he should but the real music indie gives him credit for it .. they are always talking about that song .. ... I love his instrumentals too.. Nascimento .. Kypros to name a few .. he did a song O jongo bonito at the South American Tour in November it is about the Soccer Games that were a few months ago .. .. had that vibe like Nascimento .. I loved.. he could do double disc releases, and do two different genres one on each CD he is so versed in all areas of music... I love double discs.. I only know Christina Aquilera did that and I enjoyed it .
I like that he is doing covers, and covers of his choice that he likes very much, and have a meaning he wants to bring out... out of him to us all .. that's a beautiful gift to share his music taste with us too.
I'm moved by that .. and of course the originals that will be on the CD! I'm so glad he is home again in America ... those venues are going to be do an elevation right off the foundation !!! did you send in a question to uncutaudiencewith@timeinc.com. of a question you would like to ask Yusuf/Cat xo Aurarisma

Darn that scary music teacher of mine... I think I was only in 4th or 5th grade. I still remember the man's shoes. Black, with rubber soles that were serrated...looking like the jaws of a shark. Should've seen the look he gave me when I dropped violin #2. I still like science, but it's not as glamorous as creating anything magical. Sometimes we receive reagents in the lab, packed in dry ice. From now on, when I put the dry ice into the sink to melt (takes forever), it will remind me of the Banapple Gas video when Cat is giving out Banapple Gas "ice cream" cones to the kids. Gotta have a laugh at work once in a while, eh? "Was Dog A Doughnut?" even predated "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock, which I remember was a big deal at the time of its release. Another of my absolute favorite Cat Stevens instrumental songs is "Crab Dance". It has sort of a "Classical Gas" vibe to it. I haven't sent in a question yet, though the one I was thinking of was to ask how did he go about choosing the particular blues songs that he chose to do for the new album. Not the greatest of questions I suppose.

Oh my "jaws of a shark" that's traumatic .. now I'm thinking of the Jaws soundtrack which is amazing .. but scary for 4th 5th grader!
Banapple Gas was a fun song and vid ... your job sounds quite interesting .. nice to switch from left and right brain hemispheres like that ..music and biology! I'd like to sit next to you at a dinner party ..great conversation!!! oxxoxxo O X Y G E N ..

Okay, as they say, "Don't Be Shy". I submitted my question.
Actually I am very shy, and would probably be a real wallflower at a dinner party. I would like to sit and have tea & share a conversation with Yusuf...wouldn't we all?
Haha...I was just laughing to myself yesterday, thinking: "oxeeegen!" I could certainly use some. what a coincidence.

Wow, that certainly is a wonderful review, well written and very insightful. I noticed that the fellow who wrote it is a SUNY student. Both my kids went to SUNY schools. Well done.
Thanks for posting.

I was thinking the same thing. If I remember correctly this song is a Yusuf original.
I haven't been able to listen to the link of this song, and some other recent clips, but I am willing to wait until my CD arrives to get my first listen. I am hearing good things about the songs, so it's all cool.

I am hearing good things about the songs, so it's all cool. "I was born in Babylon" is original by Yusuf (with brilliant Richard Thompson on lead acoustic guitar)... very, very good song... in some way it reminds me of "Welcome Home" (from "Roadsinger" album), another of his best. After I have heard "Dying to Live", "Gold Digger", "I was born in B." (and we somehow know "Doors" from his live concerts) ... I think that this album will be his best after his comeback, even with 5 covers

"I was raised in Babylon" is soo deep that when I close my eyes and see with the one Eye, it takes me on a ride of major texture.. the vocals and the chords... and the lyrics are spell binding aren't they???!!! XO
