Christine, What a great article! So , this room was not in use since 1975 and the murals were just found this past Spring? Is that right? Wow.,the condition & color of the murals look pretty darn good...I can only imagine what went on in this room, lol!
You know, I remember reading somewhere that Cat had a mural of the Tea album painted on one of his bedroom walls,I wonder if it still exists??

I have a sneaky feeling that whoever owns the old Georgiou family restaurant painted over that beautiful TILLERMAN WALL! Too bad! That is definately a FAMOUS CAT LANDMARK!

What wonderful hidden treasures!! I shared an apartment one year in college with some friends and my bedroom had a big mural next to the bed...Sunflowers done in a very Van Gogh (sp?) style. The place was a DUMP (typical college town rat trap) but the mural was great

Bluegirl, the article was wonderful to read wasn't it. I would have loved to have been able to stand in the middle of the room to take all the painting in. I loved the painting of Melanie as an Melanie fan of the 70's I can still invision her singing, 'Ring the living Bell' or Jose Feliciano or any of the other singer/groups of the early 70's.
Hummingbird, your old college room mural sounded wonderful. Looking back, weren't some of the old memories of the 70's magical to remember. Just some of the things we did or wore back makes me a bit nolstalgic. I remember staying at my older sisters apartment in college in the real early 70's, and to todays standards it was a dump. But being a 15 yr old kid, I thought it was great... the use of a telephone cable spool to use as their tables, or bricks and scrap wood to make book cases, army shell boxes were used to hold their LP's, they used macrame to hold plants or just make wall designs. But by the time I went to college in the later 70's, some of that early 70's freeness and magic sadly seemed to have disappeared.

My brother had a small apartment like your sister's! I can picture it in my head with many of the same stuff that you mention...but this was more toward the late 70's... hippie Love hippie

It's funny, I left school in '72. In those last few years, I remember in the art class all of us students were doing bold colourful pictures of pop icons. Very similar to those portrayed in that Mojo article, though nowhere near as good and on a much restrained A4 scale. My rendition of Bob Dylan looked more like Frank Zappa! I think it was the Yellow Submarine film and the Pop Art movement that inspired us. It was great, no disrespect to Van Gogh or Rubens, but so refreshing to see big bold pictures of things you liked, pop music and film stars, cartoon characters etc. Painters like Roy Lichtenstein and Peter Blake were great heroes. As Ian Dury once said of his former Art tutor, "For goodness sakes, look at those Blakes!" Highly recommended for his life's work on canvas and assembled artefacts.

Maybe it is just me but I have noticed that today's popstars don't dip into the artwork much, except John Mellencamp. I miss all those artists doing their own album covers.
And Christine, I still love Melanie.....Does anyone want some 'Animal Crackers'...?
I am wondering if the picture is possibly on the wall in Alfreds behind some paint, could an art restorer recover it... You know, it would probably be worth so much and could make ole Alfred very wealthy.
Love, A'isha
