I was chatting to a friend of mine about errors on album sleeves and the various anomalies that are sometimes thrown up by the language and typographical barrier! I've spotted a few: On the German View From The Top album we have: Come On Baby (Schift That Log), I'm Gonna Be Kind and Image Of Hall! On the sleeve notes of the UK Very Best Of Cat Stevens the first Island album is referred to as Mono Bone Jakon! No come back it's true I tell you! Before we get into the realms of stamp collecting...more interestingly, why did a cut of Image Of Hell, without the strings appear on the US Very Young And Early Songs and UK compilations like The View From The Top? It appears the original master got lost or switched? Other interesting points, is the single cut of Another Saturday Night a slightly different mix/edit of the live version on the Japanese only Saturnight album? I can only have these conversations with you Majicat people, my wife just doesn't understand!!

A Mono Bone Jakon only has one channel as opposed to a Stereo Bone Jakon!? Maybe!

George, You must tell us if you ever see a Stereo Bone Jakon, as we'll really have to strengthen your medication then...

George!
Interesting topic, and neat finds .... But what is "I'm Gonna be Kind"? Huh??
A friend of mine from work brought in Very Young and Early Songs to show me a few weeks back (it's one I don't own) -- I wish I had taken it home and listened to it, to see what you mean about the strings! ... maybe one day...
Hmmm.... interesting.
Oh, and I noticed that too about Another Saturday Night. When I first heard ASN on Saturnight I thought, "that sounds suspiciously close to the single" (every "mm-mm", "uh-uh-oh", etc...) Then I found out the single was indeed derived from the concert song (just re-mixed or "cleaned up"). Yep.
Interesting, all right...
Take care George!
- Lucy.

Hi Lucy, I'm Gonna Be Kind was I'm Gonna Be King (from New Masters). The proof-reader had glasses like the bottoms of wine bottles! Actually these days that version of Image Of Hell without strings seems easier to find than the original single release as B-side of Lovely City...or Lively City on some releases (I'm telling lies!).

George is not alone, there are many like him. I myself suffered from the affects of Pop Trivia for many years, and it could just as easily happen to you!!!
Please, if you can, give generously, and send donations to: Poptriviaholics, (The one after) 909, Blackberry Way, CALIFORNIA dreaming, Surfin' USA

Lady D,
Now that is the stuff, dubious legality that one!? Do you think they confused the image of Cat with Ringo Starr? "Bearded English Pop Star, that picture will do!" They both looked pretty similar during that time? If you get any "swops" of that let me know!!
DJ,
It is an awful affliction. But, I'm assured of a train carriage all to myself when I go up to London. On a packed train, I just have to mention to whoever is sitting next to me that I'm hoping to find the "Quadrophonic Foreigner" and the commuters are gone in seconds! The only time I'm popular is when people fight to have me on their teams on pop quiz nights! Otherwise and most sadly I am a social outcast. It is not a pretty sight seeing a grown man clutching a copy of a vinyl record, crying tears of joy, on his knees in the middle of a crowded high street! Can you recommend a support group, e.g. Pop Trivia-aholics!? The medication has terrible side affects, apathy, lethargy, dry mouth, vacant stare, even when my wife gave my Cat singles to the local charity shop!! "You did what dear? Oh that's fine zzzz".

George, Be brave, we'll get through this together. There is hope at the end of the tunnel, just take one step at a time. Getting off the Vinyl is the first step. I find the medication does help, and there have been absolutely ( BOIIING, BOIIING!) no real ( FFTANNG, FFTANNNG!) nasty side affects whatso..( CLUCK,CLUCK, SQUEEEEEK!)...ever!

George!
Oh, I get it!! I was thinking I'm Gonna Be Kind was the opposite of I'm Gonna Get me a Gun ..... well it *is* opposite... sort of.... I forgot ALL about I'm Gonna Be King.
Oh, and DJ..... "Olé Biscuit Barrel" to you!
I agree, Jen... guy threads are fun to jump in on ...

Hi Jen & Hummingbird, Thanks for the appreciation of this "guy" thread. Is collecting vinyl a blokes "thing"? I reckon there must be some females with the addiction!? My shoulders broadened as I read your messages of support, thanks. DJ, thanks especially for your support and I'm sorry to see that you have suffered a lasting quirkiness like myself. Vinyl is like nicotine to me and as a non-smoker I can appreciate how offensive the habit is. The same thing goes for being a "vinyl junkie". I have developed inappropriate rituals such as holding the things up to the light and checking for dust and scratches! Even smelling the things, the mustier the sleeve and thicker the grade of vinyl the better the experience! My top set of teeth have started to protrude over my bottom lip as I savour the things! All extremely unpleasant to see!! This never goes down very well at all in churches or at parties. Again, exclaiming in tears that "My Izitso is flawed!" does get some very worrying looks from the general public! Thanks to you DJ, I feel that I can now share these problems with you guys and good to see Monty Python has subconsciously affected us all! Have a great weekend all!

oooooh the vinyl smell, I can relate to that! Nothing smells better (well except perhaps chocolate) than an old vinyl album.
George, this doesn't relate to typo's, but don't you love watching an LP go round in circles on the turn table when it is slighlty warped, just to see if the needle will jump or ride the Lp like a wave. It's almost hypnotizing to watch the action of the needle on the worst of warped LP's

Hahaha...nope vinyl is not exclusively a "guy" thing. Hey, I've recently started collecting it myself I'm enjoying the guy chatter...so carry-on I found a used record shop near where I work...I definately can relate to to what you all are saying regarding the smell. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how it smelled like my parents old basement when I was a kid...hahaha!! Mostly I love the full size artwork that the LP format provides. Cat's albums really were mini works of art!! I haven't come across any imports or rare ones in the old record shop yet For anyone that may be interested, Restoration Hardware (store, catalog company, website) has a portable/suitcase-style record player for about $120.00. It's supposed to sound pretty good - claims to have have big stereo sound (kind of like the Bose wave radio, I guess). -jen.

Glad to hear it, I'm not alone!
I wondered if generally, men are more interested in this collecting thing than women! Primally being hunter- gatherers! I think there's a fine line between collecting and hoarding so I'd like to think my records are all gems! I also wonder if obsessive collectors (present company excluded!) have chaotic lives and they need to have some order that's satisfied by their interests!? e.g. their albums are filed from A-Z!? I do believe the real and less materialistic world is preferable and I'm trying to be honest. I doubt if anyone is truly happy with their relationships or lives if they have a house full of 2,000 Beanie-babies, or 15,000 lead infantry soldiers etc! I sound like I'm on the mend!!

George, On a serious note for a moment, I think this affliction doesn't just affect men, it's just that men and women may just collect different things. What is worrying is when an interest flips over into an obsession, which then becomes the most important thing in their lives to the detriment of work or relationships. The most bizarre one I've seen was on a TV programme where there was a guy who collected traffic cones from around the world. To be honest there were an amazing variety, but what the hell do you do with them all , not to mention the space to display them? ( He didn't stack them, by the way ) You can imagine some bewildered and unsuspecting visitor being proudly shown round his collection, trying to think of something to say to him.. I wonder if Yusuf used to collect anything.... he certainly collected a lot of ladies when he was Cat Stevens, and I'm guessing there are a few at Majicat that wouldn't mind being part of his private collection even now

DJ, Traffic cones!? What a sad life, imagine getting the full set of them! Oh well, at least nobody parked illegally in his house! I suppose anything in moderation is fine. I did have a buddy that used to collect comics and probably still does. He had a room with wall to wall comics and to my eye, more quantity than quality. He actually had a structural problem develop in his house where the sheer weight was causing the ceiling in the room underneath to bow! The last time I saw his house it had a lifesize Spiderman on the roof, no kidding! But looking back, it was such great fun for him. It's just getting the balance right. The "hunter-gatherer" thing, has anyone really really wanted a rare record, for example? Searched for eons in every record shop available, Discoveries & Goldmine magazines and eventually tracked down the beast!? Now that is the moment! ;D But then it's an anti-climax almost, you put it in a pine drawer, play it three times and you go tracking some other gem!! Madness...but we're hooked! Jen, Chris, your mention of the aesthetic qualities and smell of an old album reminded me of something. As a younger man I used to trek up to London to Portobello Road and the West End searching for gems. I remember chatting to a dealer in a second hand record shop. Whenever I was in the shop I'd often see this guy buying loads of rare records. I remarked on what a good customer he was. The dealer told me that the collector never ever played his purchases, just liked the covers and history! This I cannot understand!!

I guess one man's (or women's ) treasure is another's trash. But one thing I absoluted abhor is clutter!! I guess for that reason I've never been a big collector of anything. Sometimes, that can be a bad thing...I've gotten rid of so many things that I kind of miss now (including some of my old CS stuff). I've replaced some of it through e-bay etc, but somehow it's not the same. Does that make sense

George, I love your posts...
My sister used to collect Steiff teddy bears/animals and other such stuff (pun intended). She got all into how darling their facial expressions were and everything. "Look how cute this little Scottish Terrier is!" "Look at his eyes!" She'd even spend evenings patching up missing mohair on their little bodies.
Now she has real dogs. And she brushes their teeth.
A friend of mine from work once mentioned to me that a relative of his collected dirt. In jars. Ha ha!!! This friend of mine is an avid vinyl collecter himself.
I personally believe collecting/obsessive behavior runs in families.
And yes, Christine... I too love the smell of a vinyl album. Both the sleeve and the record itself. Ahhhhh-mmmmm......
