Hi All, I've been listening to Bismillah alot the past few weeks and really enjoying it. Yusuf's acapella version of The Wind is lovely and sounds very compatible with the islam-inspired devotional songs. That led me to wonder, if there are any other CS songs that would be candidates for Yusuf to re-record for a future project. I guess the one that comes to mind for me is Silent Sunlight. While it doesn't contain any explicit references to God, I've always felt it had a spirtitual tone. Especially these particular lyrics: Silent sunlight, welcome in There is work I must now begin .... and ... Sleepy horses, heave away Put your backs to the golden hay Don't ever look behind at the work you've done For your work has just begun They'll be the evening in the end But till that time arrives You can rest your eyes And begin again It always sounded to me that this was about doing God's work...the "evening" perhaps being judgement day. Anyway, I think this song would sound so pretty done acapella maybe with some nature sounds and/or children's voices. Oh heck, Yusuf could even change a word or two if he deemed it necessary; after all, it's his song . So what do you all think? Is Silent Sunlight too secular for a Yusuf Islam cd? Are there any other songs that may be viable candidates?

Hi Jen! Yeah, I've thought about that before and I think there are several of his old songs that would be "Islamically" appropriate. I will get back to this in a couple of days as I have to get back to studying tonight.. BTW, Silent Sunlight would be perfect!

Well we all saw Yusuf sing PEACE TRAIN, so we know that he can do that! Yes, I agree with SILENT SUNLIGHT! Other great choices would be, FILL MY EYES, I WISH I WISH, FATHER AND SON, MOONSHADOW, OH VERY YOUNG! There are many others that I think would be great choices as well!
Peace,Vivian

ALL the songs mentioned are excellent choices! One song in particular I would LOVE to hear him re-record is "Ruins"! THAT song is especially appropriate for what is currently happening in the World, and Yusuf has PROVED that his voice if anything has a BETTER ;D range than it did when he recorded the original version! I agree Shirley. I would love to hear Yusuf sing Ruins. That is such a wonderful song and would sound great with just his beautiful voice.

I'd like to hear Yusuf sing " Daytime" or perhaps "O'caritas"

I really (REALLY!) like the idea of Daytime too!! I loved the way Yusuf performed it for the Year of the Child concert. There was such a gentle sincerity in his voice and demeanor. Gosh, I really love that song.
Ruins is a great choice too. Not so different, really, from Yusuf's The Little Ones from the Cannons cd.

All the one's you guys mentioned would be great! What about my fav "100 I dream"? "Don't be shy"? "Tea for the Tillerman"? "Oh very young"? "King of Trees"? "Home in the Sky"(maybe)? "The Tramp"? "Father"? "Never"? "Child for a Day"? "Katmandu"? and last but not least "Love lives in the Sky" "Oh the trees grow higher than the mountain in the land of free love and goodbye.... ....and the love lives in the sky...." peace and love, Susan

I am sure that Vivian will say this but I think all of his stuff would make great remakes. But narrowing it down to the best bets would have to be "Love Lives In The Sky", "Katmandu", "Oh Very Young", "Moonshadow", "Into White"...Oh the list seems to be endless. But I know that he would do a great job with any re-recording of his material.
Love, A

Oh YES, Christine!!! HOW could I possibly forget "O'Caritas"! ;D Gosh, the more I think about him possibly re-recording these songs, the more EXCITED I become about it!!! I was planning anyway to call his secretary this EARLY Monday morning. When I call her I WILL mention this thread to her! I would just LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a CD with NEW recordings of "Ruins"; "O' Caritas"; "Never"; "Katmandu"; "Fill My Eyes"; "Where Are You"; "Daytime"; "King Of Trees"; "Into White" and "Silent Sunlight"! Shirley ;D

Well you know just about every song he ever did could be re-recorded "Islamically" appropriate except for stuff like "The boy with the moon and star on his head" or "Bonfire" (some of my very favorites too, I might add! ) Hehehe... peace and love, Susan

Yes, but I think BOY WITH THE MOON AND STAR can be re written with a small change in the lyrics at the beginning that would make it appropriate for Yusuf today! And being that he is such a genius, if anyone can do that, Yusuf can!

I've always thought Silent Sunlight would be nice. Ruins too (definitely! -- good choice).
And I bet the world would LOVE to hear him sing Morning Has Broken again! I do!! Nobody sings it like he does... (and I think it could be quite Islamically er... compatible. Really I do! Not to mention religiously UNIFYING!)
(I love your enthusiasm, Shirley!!!!!!)

Even "Later" is risque. He did mention something about being in a 'certain state of physical being' when he came up with that one. I think Christine has the article where Cat is talking about "Later". Now I am trying to figure out how he can alter "The Boy..." to make it "Islamically Kosher/Halal" but somehow the changes would alter the entire song and its ending. Yusuf will have to put alot of thought into that one but if anyone can do it, he can. How about a remake of "I Love My Dog". It is timeless. Love, A

O.K., I'm still thinking about this. As much as I love all these choices, try as I may I can't picture Yusuf singing some of these songs today. True, they could be re-recorded without the stringed instruments etc. But I don't know content-wise if this is where it's at for him now, esp for a general but islamically-oriented audience. And I was thinking he seems too 'grown up' for a couple of them. But what I DO think would work beautifully would be a childrens cd with a re-recorded Peace Train or Morning Has Broken (possibly Moonshadow too!). How nice these songs would sound next to A is for Allah or Salaams Salaams (what a gem of a little song that is...I love Yusuf as a back-up singer...hahaha). I love the sound of the BBC recorded Peace Train...the harmony of Cat and Alun's voices on the chorus and the tom-tom drum sounds. I think Peace Train would sound great acapella with just percussion. Hey, who knows...maybe one day we'll hear Yusuf do another Cat classic. I hope so

Well actually, we DID hear Yusuf do a couple Cat classics! One of them, we had the WONDERFUL HONOR of seeing live! Hearing THE WIND with the sounds of winds in the backround adds that special touch! We don't even miss guitar! And hearing PEACE TRAIN live, acappella was MESMORIZING! And to re record it in the studio would be WONDERFUL! And for special effects, I think having train sounds would be delightful!
