That's lovely, Christine. WOW, Island Music. Full circle. Well, almost (- not counting Deram.... ) I think it's wonderful to hear Yusuf speak of George -- I've always wondered his thoughts on GH and it's lovely to see some words spoken. And I love that: "galaxy of material." Typical droll and clever YI way of talking. Can't wait to hear the song. And many of us still miss GH.... so this alleviates that a bit....

Interesting too about the "American Indians".
Wonder if Yoriyos was involved in this effort at all, too?

That's exactly what I thought, Lucy.... full circle. I'd be interesting to hear his new music. As for GH, you know he was my other favorite singer, so in a way, it's like I am getting my wish to come true, to have a GH/CS dual. Joni, I miss him to. What an inspiration he was.

George Harrison and his wife were great friends with Bob Dylan and Sara. When Bob appeared at the concert for Bangladesh he hadn't played toured in eight years. Here's another gem from his latest "Tell Tale Signs" just released a few weeks ago. He'll be 68 in a few weeks. Listen to his phrasing. And he took a lot of crap for changing his religion too! www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZNxJirqjEQ

Me too, Cat Stevens and George Harrison - I cried and cried when George died. I'm interested to hear both of these GH songs sung by Cat, but it also seems a bit odd to me. As many of us agree, anyone who covers Cat Stevens songs can never capture Cat Stevens! We can get pretty protective of Cat. No-one has Cat's voice for Cat's songs!!! I'm the same about George! And Cat - well, Yusuf, will never sound like George! And NO-ONE is going to do a better job in my mind than George on 'All things must pass'. The 'Concert for George' did a wonderful rendition of it, but they still didn't get there for me! At least they're good song choices if he's going to cover another artist! The return to Island Records is interesting and cool! Now personally speaking, I would love 'Maybe there's a world that I'm still to find...' to mean what I hoped it might've meant when I first heard it... and that he'll grow his hair back... and... dare I say it, go by the name of Cat Stevens again!!! I guess that's as likely as him becoming young again (along with all us fans too)!!!

This year seems to be a year of remarkable 'CHANGE'. I feel we are in for alot of surprises. I don't see YI growing his hair long agian, or a name change, but a little beard trim would be nice.

Hi there.
Its funny, I too have noticed that YI seems to be changing into CS again. He still holds dear his religious beliefs but his dress style is changing and he is looking younger. I agree a beard trim would be lovely. Now also is the return to Island Records ...what next Yusuf?
Either CS or YI, we still love you
Peace Margi

Christine, thank you for this terrific article. I think you are all onto something, though I agree with Vicki - I don't think Yusuf will change his name or grow his hair long - but you never know. Remember that recent article? Here are some interesting quotes: Yusuf in Cat Stevens form with '70s reissues By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY 11th January 2009
BEVERLY HILLS — Though separated at rebirth Cat Stevens and Yusuf are hardly strangers
. . . Yusuf remains emotionally and philosophically committed to the landmarks that yielded Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and Father and Son.
. . . Recorded in his early 20s, Tea and Teaser not only resonate with Yusuf (“They explain why I’m so engaged in music now”), but they’ve also retained cultural relevance, he says. . .
. . . Yusuf’s sense of wonderment remains intact . . .
. . .You have to direct yourself to something higher than yourself, beyond a material level. That’s what the songs [on Teaser and Tillerman] represent. They still connect back to me. . .
Soft-spoken and slim, sporting a neat beard, white jacket and blue-tinted glasses, Yusuf projects a gentle, pensive demeanor, not unlike his younger persona . . .
When he released 2006’s An Other Cup, his first new pop album in 28 years, “people were blown away that it sounded like…me,” he says with a laugh.
David Spero, Yusuf’s manager, sees maturity, not a radical personality change. “Cat Stevens was the voice of a generation, and Yusuf is a voice of that same generation grown up,” he says.
Yusuf’s son Yoriyos, also a musician, chimes in: “The biggest misconception is that he’s two people. I don’t see the difference between his music today and in the past. It’s just a continuation, an evolving. Peace, ~Sun~

I am so glad I am not the only one. I mean, I adore the guy no matter what, but a closer-trimmed beard would just add something. I guess one is never alone with a CS/YI thought here on this site! ;D ;D ;D

The major thing I am excited (beyond control) about Yusuf being prepared to embrace some of his former self is the potential for a world tour!!!- this is a time I have long awaited! I always wanted to see a Zimmering, Bambozzled or even a Majikat of my own
