Strange isn't it? Probably my two favourite songs of all time are on a very similar theme.
Harry Chapin's - 'Cat's in the Cradle' that I and lots of people thought at some time was actually a Cat Stevens song
And of course Cat's "Father & Son".
One would be silly to begin comparing, ranking or rating these songs against each other.
They are both incredible.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's strange. Both songs tell very important stories, told of very different times.

Isn't it funny (in a good way), that the theme of both songs is so similar?
Both tell stories about the divide between father and son, old and young, mature and naive, settled and adventurous. Although the songs are musically different, Harry and Cat portrayed very similar "takes" on the father-son relationship.
Which makes me wonder - did Cat and Harry meet at any point during the '70's?? Both of them were such gifted storytellers that I would imagine any interaction between them would be interesting and thoughtful.

They are both wonderful songs.
As a point of interest, I heard Sandy Chapin actually wrote 'Cat's in the Cradle' and Harry put it to music. The story goes, that Sandy was upset with Harry for constantly being on the road performing and not taking enough time with their children. So, she wrote it one night while he was away on tour, sending the poem to him with hopes of getting him to spend more time at home. I bet she never realized at the time it would become a #1 hit.

Partly true Christine, although like most things in life, it wasn't that simple. A more complete story is available on Harry Chapin's website.
Songs rarely reflect total fact. 'ARTISTS write songs' An artist may be an accountant, and engineer or a baker, but when the artist begins to write, or to paint, or whatever, then, skill or professions ae left behind.
