Jackie, I noticed you mention Donovan, another early English pop star I loved. Years ago Donovan was giving a free concert at the Cleveland Zoo to help promote the zoo's attendence. It must have been around 1980 - 1983, it was the year the zoo was doing a series of free concert. There were 2 old couples sitting in front of us listening to Donovan singing. They were just entranced by his songs and voice, never hearing him before or knowing who he was. They turned to us and asked us if we were enjoying the concert, which we said we were. Then they said in an all serious voice, 'He should go professional... he's much better than many of the singers out today.' It was really sweet listening to this old couple who obviously didn't know who Donovan was, go on and on about his voice and music. Chris, you, might like to know he has a great new studio album out called 'Beat cafe' which is a fanatastic 'mood piece' recreating the style of music of a bohemian cafe, with elements of folk, jazz, poetry and blues. Sounds like they had a lot of fun recording it, accompanied by the wonderful Danny Thomson on stand up bass, most of the pieces seem to have evolved out of jam sessions, so the whole CD sounds loose, but clear and intimate. Here's Donavan's site www.donovan.ie/beatcafe/index.htmHe did some warm up gigs in the US late last year, and now I've just found out he's playing a series of live dates in the UK this Spring, (details on his website ) I haven't seen him play live since the mid-70's, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I remember Paul Kelly("Glory Be To God"). I loved Hunters And Collectors too(Mark Seymour is pretty damn brilliant)! Mark's song "Throw Your Arms Around Me" has got to be one of my all-time favorite songs!
I also LOVED The Divinyls too-"Only Lonely" is such a POWERFUL song! I always was amazed that Amphlett didn't become a HUGE star here in the States! She was VERY talented and unique and VERY sexy too! Do you like Dave Dobbyn? I liked his song "The Forecast For Tuesday"!

Dean Martin John Lennon Freddie Mercury Phil Collins Elton John Bee Gees The Everly Brothers Ritchie Valens Eventhough Ritchie Valens died at the age of 17 he helped inspire a new era of music. He only had two real hits, 'Donna' and 'La Bamba', but he inspired the likes of the Rascals, Bob Dylan and R.E.M, etc, etc. I think Paul McCartney's voice is over-rated and he doesn't deserve a spot on my list. John Lennon was the only one who had a real Rock n' Roll voice in the Beatles. However, I must say that Paul McCartney is a great song writer

He only had two real hits, 'Donna' and 'La Bamba', but he inspired the likes of the Rascals, Bob Dylan and R.E.M, etc, etc. Valens actually had a third big hit("C'on, Let's Go!")which at the time was a BIGGER hit than "La Bamba". "La Bamba"("The Rattlesnake")was actually more of a local(L.A. area)hit for awhile before it began to take on a HUGE following after his untimely end. It was always my favorite! Valens also had another hit("OOH! My Head!")after he made an appearance in one of those Alan Freed "all-star revues" in which he performed the song. Most folks outside of the U.S. aren't familiar with that song, though. You are SOOOOOO right about Valen's influence on artists to come, especially Hispanic artists(Chris Montez,Carlos Santana, Los Lobos, to name but a few). Perhaps his greatest contribution was the idea of bringing one's ethnic musical culture into Rock music-combining that culture's unique flavors and rhythms with those of traditional Rock. Before Valens came on the scene, Rock's main musical influences had been Blues and Country/Western. After Valens, the doors were literally flung wide open for ALL manner of musical influences to shape Rock into what it is today. Valens took TREMENDOUS heat from critics and fans alike for this original idea. We can thank HIM for the diversity of what Rock music has become today. If you'd like to read what Chris Montez("The More I See You", "Let's Dance")has to say about Valens and his influence, read the interview I did with Chris Montez from December 2002( http://girlhowdy233.tripod.com) Chris has ENORMOUS respect for Valens as both an artist and a man. ;DShirley

When you read the interview, you might notice that Valen's first name is spelled WRONG there(it's spelled "Richie" NOT the correct "RITCHIE")! This was because the webmaster I had at that time took it upon himself to "correct" my "spelling error" WITHOUT consulting me prior to publication! Since then, I have a NEW(and COMPETENT)webmaster who has gone back and corrected typo errors the prior did(such as "definit ley"). Bob DOES need to to go back and COMPLETE the job with correcting Ritchie's name though,LOL! Shirley

I swear I must be getting senile!! I wanted to reply to this thread, but decided to see what had already been written. Imagine my surprise when I saw someone with my similar tastes, Bobby Sherman, Barry Manilow and Paul Anka. Then I looked to the left and discovered it was MY post from October. ROTFL! Good thing I read before I posted. I would have looked even sillier than I feel right now.

I forgot to add Bruce Springsteen! Another man who puts on killer concerts!!! :oOMG YES!!! When I first saw Bruce in concert(in the early '80's, shortly after releasing "The River")he was STILL performing his famous L-O-N-G marathon concerts(the concert was a whopping FOUR HOURS LONG)! Not before or since have I seen ANY artist able to put on such a LOOOONG show and have it as fresh and vital at the END as it was at the START! ;DALL HAIL "The Boss"! Shirley

It would please me beyond words to see him nominated into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame(where he really DESERVES a place as much as anybody else I can think of who is there)! Though other European peers of his(most notably Kraftwerk)were taking music into a totally NEW realm with electronics, I have always felt that it was GARY who best succeeded in infusing a truly warm and..well...HUMAN quality into electric music. Every time I listen to songs like "Are Friends Electric?", "Cars", "Please Push No More" and "Down In The Park" I am in AWE of his truly unique musical vision! Is it any wonder that he is called "The Godfather Of Electric Music" by critics and his peers alike! ;DRAVE ON GARY NUMAN!!! Shirley

Can't believe nobody seems to have mentioned Strawbs - brilliant band with some incredible lyrics and still going strong. Their lead singer, Dave Cousins, was quite friendly with Cat I read somewhere once - a lot of mutual respect I should imagine.

I can see cat digging them and them digging Cat! Some of my other musical interests besides cat: Dylan Nick Drake Neil Finn (Crowded House) Paul Weller Blackmore's Night Oh, so many more! I love classical music as well, (Piano), it all depends on my mood. (As you can see , I am not so fond of female singers. There are very few that I do like.)
