Can77 (don't know what he calls himself here) has taken it upon himself to educate my family about Turkish pop music. One of my favorite groups is 'Sefarad'. www.tulumba.com/icy_itemdesc.asp?ic=MU940910ED845The groups name refers to Sephardic jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition by going to Turkey. There they have a vibrant community of some 500 years age now. Turan

The love all the music of the artists from your list below too... Nick Drake Simon and Garfunkel (both as a duo and as solo artists) Led Zeppelin The Beatles James Taylor CSN Buffalo Springfield Neil Young ... and would add the following, with my favourite album of theirs in brackets - John Martyn ( Solid air) Joni Mitchell (Blue) David Sylvian (Secrets of the beehive) Peter Gabriel (Us) U2 (The Joshua tree) R.E.M. ( Out of time) The Zombies (Odessey & oracle) Crowded House (Woodface) For the majority of the above, it's their earlier work I like most. I tend to go for singer/songwriters music which I can play on acoustic guitar, I love trying to figure the songs out.

Other than Cat: Okay Paul McCartney Simon and Garfunkel Neil Diamond John Denver Elton John The Beatles And many others. Those are the famous ones. Now for the "not" famous ones, my own Hairy Hippie Busker makes great music, and if anyone wnats a copy of his CD, PM me your address, and I'll send you one. Also, I've mentioned this before, but Hairy and I have a friend who is a street musician in London who makes grest music. Check out his website. www.alonsomusic.com He does some great Cat covers, including Father and Son, and you can hear a snippet of it on his site, including some of his own orginals. Peace,Vivian

Interesting post, as usual, Turan! I'll have to check this out. To the question on the thread: Jethro Tull John Denver Elton John Also, anything with a good beat (fun to work out to) Greek music, particularly our Bay Area band, Fotia I am glad it intrigued you. I am especially fond of your top choice. ;D 'Songs from the Wood' was the first album I ever bought, and still a favorite. The members of BrotherhoodBand, one of my choices, also like Jethro Tull and John Denver quite abit. Some of you here will recognize this band as three CScom members. So I will shamelessly plug their website again. www.brotherhoodband.net/I especially recomend 'I am the River', 'Black eyed Joey' and 'Morning Returns' Turan

In this approx. order:
1. Jacques Brel
2. Claude Debussy
3. The Beatles
4. Hank Williams
5. Van Morrison
6. The Doors
7. Peter Green(during his Fleetwood Mac period)
8. Willie Dixon
9. Jimi Hendrix
10. Graham Gouldman
11. Elvis Costello
12. Paul Simon(during his period with Art)
13. Waylon Jennings
14. Johnny Cash
15. Nick Drake
It literally blows me away at the sheer VOLUMN of landmark Blues recordings that were written and/ or featured musical solos by Dixon. Had he never lived, Blues would surely NEVER have fully developed into what it became.
The same goes for Williams. I find it IMPOSSIBLE to fathom what Country music would be today had it not been for this man's STELLAR contributions in his all too short time on this earth.
Same goes for Van Morrison and The Doors on their IMMEASURABLE influence/contributions to Rock(and in the case of Morrison and Costello, modern popular music, period).
For sheer VOLUMN of truely QUALITY songs they have written and performed as SOLO artists, Morrison and Costello IMHO simply have NO peers. Their work has remained cosistently BRILLIANT:something VERY HARD to do in such a LONG career as each has enjoyed.
As for Gouldman, he may not be a well-known name here in the U.S., but he wrote a STAGGERING number of truely CLASSIC Rock songs in the '60's("Bus Stop", "Heart Full Of Soul", "Listen People" to name but a few). He has always been one of my all-time favorite songwriters and I've always thought his music defined that era in Rock.
As for Peter Green, well, DON'T get me started on ALL the reasons WHY I think he deserves to be in this list...TOO MANY to list here!
;)Gosh, there are MORE, but I had to stop at some point, and 15 seemed like a good place to stop,LOL!

Jackie, I noticed you mention Donovan, another early English pop star I loved. Years ago Donovan was giving a free concert at the Cleveland Zoo to help promote the zoo's attendence. It must have been around 1980 - 1983, it was the year the zoo was doing a series of free concert. There were 2 old couples sitting in front of us listening to Donovan singing. They were just entranced by his songs and voice, never hearing him before or knowing who he was. They turned to us and asked us if we were enjoying the concert, which we said we were. Then they said in an all serious voice, 'He should go professional... he's much better than many of the singers out today.' It was really sweet listening to this old couple who obviously didn't know who Donovan was, go on and on about his voice and music.

Christine that would have been such a funny situation! Lucky you for actually seeing him sing live. Donovan was always a fave when I was a teenager. I am trying to play Catch the Wind at present on guitar, er it's sounding a little "rough around the edges" at present. Jackie

A few of my favourites, besides Cat would be ... .....Donovan ... Catch the Wind Gordon Lightfoot Jackie OMG! HOW could I possibly forget Donovan!!! I swear that not one day goes by that I don't listen to this BRILLIANT Scot's music!!! I especially adore his older classics("Midsummer Day Reflection Song", "Jersey Thursday", "Turquoise")and actually went so far as to dedicate the better part of one shopping day in London to finding a collection of his older hits which would include these songs! God, I have NAGGED the Rock & Roll Hall Of fame for AGES to include him!!! Gordon too is among my MOST revered artists-his early songs were just EXQUISITE("Pussywillows, Cat-Tails", "Last Time I Saw Her", "If I Could"). There are a couple of really gorgeous lines from "Last Time I Saw Her" that for me sum up perfectly how one feels when reflecting back on memories of a TRULY GREAT love affair now lost: "The last time I walked with her, her laughter was the steeple bells that ring to greet the morning sun. A voice that called to EVERYONE to love the ground we walked upon! THOSE were the good days." "And if time could heal the wounds, I would tear the threads away, that I might bleed some MORE!" One word: Shirley

Shirley I'm planning on seeing Roy Harper next July in Ireland and if I haven't left it too late to get tickets, his son, Nick is playing locally this Sunday evening. I use to go to Roy's concerts as often as I could, the last was in 1988, there was so much dope being smoked in there, I'm sure everyone must have been high, lol.
