Salaam alaykom and greetings,

I think it would be a good idea to limit the length of posts to a given number of words.

Perhaps the words could be totalled in the way that the signature message is done... you know, 300 characters and it lets you know where you're at.

I know that when I get involved in a topic, I can get long-winded... particularly if I site quotes from other posts in the thread, etc.

I am sometimes embarrassed when I have to scroll through the length of my post, since it didn't seem that long when I was writing it.

Even I don't even want to read all of it.

I also have this unfortunate shortness of attention span when I encounter other very long posts. I will usually read a couple of sentences and then scroll to the next post.

Perhaps this is just a difficulty that primarily I have... I am just thinking out loud.

Wa'sallam and peace,
kareema

Kareema, I have to agree with you. I hate to admit this, but when I encounter a very long post or a post with a lot of cutting 'n pasting I too tend to read the first few lines and skip over the rest. I am just too busy to spend a great deal of time reading through long posts. That's also one of the reasons I avoid long debates on topics now. It just takes too long to research stuff and formulate a halfway intelligent response. I simply don't have time...

WaSalaam,
Sakinah

Sometimes I just get tired of reading extremely long posts. Sometimes I have little time to devote to them. But if someone wants to post them, they can just do the continuation thing and continue it in two or more posts. So I doubt there is a real solution for it.

Love,
C

Kareema and Sakinah,
No one is twisting your arm to read long posts or to respond to them. If you don't want to read them, then don't. This is not your forum to set guidelines. If you can't handle the lengthy posts, I wonder how you handle reading books?

Salaam and greetings,

I hadn't really thought of the possibility that a person could just make a series of shorter posts instead of one very long one.

I think I would still prefer the series of shorter posts to the other option, however, sort of like a Reader's Digest approach. That would help me with my time constraints and my 'attention deficit disorder' .

Now that I know that I am not the only person who doesn't read the really lengthy ones in their entirety, I will attempt to be more concise.

I have been wanting to bring this subject up for a while.

I just ran it up the flag to see what others would say.

Thanks for your input,

I hope more members will respond.

Wa'sallam and peace,
kareema

A good suggestion! Messages should be concise. Otherwise it's like finding a needle in a haystack. I think it's great when someone posts some positive information. What I don't like is when someone hijacks an innocent thread and turns it into a negative thesis. Especially if the content is sensitive. I also think lengthy posts are an imposition on Christine's site.

My idea is....perhaps trying to focus on just one or maybe two topics per post. Some posts have multiple complicated topics which I find difficult to address. I am just sooo busy in my 3D life as I'm sure most everyone is and want to interact and respond to folks here...but I just don't have the time to address multiple topics sometimes. Please, I mean no offense or disrespect to anyone here! No one should feel compelled to follow my thoughts here...I'm just putting them out as ideas only.

love and peace,
Sak

Sometimes I don't think consicely. Sometimes I throw words on a subject till I have it well subdued.

Then again I also skim long posts. Isn't it weird how it is harder to read long tracts on a computer than in a book or newspaper? I think it is something to do with head angle or maybe just expectation? Books at least have more time put into their composition than posts.

Turan

At the moment, things will stay as they are. I understand, I have a tendency to sometimes overlook long post as well. I get bored with them and go on to the next post. But if I were to put a 500 -700 word cap on all posts, it really does limit people. And it is nice to let people have the freedom to express themselves. Also there is the case of copying and pasting an article from a magazine to the messageboard, as some have done in th past. You would have to place it on two or three different posts to place the whole article up.

So for now, I think it is best that we deal with the way it is now. My suggestion is if one is to correspond to two or more posts, perhaps making separate posts for each correspondance. But this is still up to the postee to decide how they wish to write out their posts.

Thanks for the suggestion, but for now it will continue as it has in the past. If it leads to problems further in the future, then I will look into it.

Christine

I would suggest that the number of words we post may not be as important as what we post. It would be very nice if posters to a specific thread would stay on topic. It is so very easy to start a new thread to say whatever happens to be on our mind. It is so frustrating to be engrossed in a very interesting topic, only to have two, three or four unrelated messages in the middle of all the ones about the particular topic at hand.

That being said, I too find the really long endless posts with much "cut and paste" difficult to read. This is not a critique of those who do post such messages. It is just that I am afraid that sometimes the "meaning or important point" that you are attempting to make might not even be read, because of the length. Perhaps a shorter post that gets to the point might help to make your efforts clearer. Just a thought....
~~MK
