Bringing this back up as Americans will have a chance to see this film this coming January 16 2010 at 2:30 AM EST on TCM (Turner Classic Movies). So this is one rare occasion to record the movie. It is followed at 4:00 AM by another Skolimowksi cult classic "The Shout" Just curious, anybody watched this last night?

It must have been a television event that was noted on many a calendar of those Majicatters who have access to Turner Classic Movies. I, unfortunately, do not have TCM. Thanks to your head's-up, I am sure that several viewed this. I'm with you: can't wait to hear some reactions! -Bud

Alright, I now know for an absolute fact that I very much want to see this. Disturbing? I miss the early 70s, heyday of disturbing moments and unhappy endings. The culture has been going downhill ever since corporations grabbed control back from the artists in the mid 70s.
That reference to the film on the back of TftT has grabbed my attention ever since I got the album.

Bringing this back up yet again because of some exciting news from CINEBEATS website: "It seems that Bavaria Film International is currently working on restoring and releasing Deep End on DVD and it should be available sometime this year so if you didn’t have the opportunity to catch it when it played on TMC you should be able to see it soon. According to Hollywood Reporter the DVD will feature commentary by the director and a remastered soundtrack by Cat Stevens and the German electronic band Can." www.bavaria-film-international.de/htmls/bfi/index.php?site=program&id=273Hopefully, this will be available everywhere!

Coming back to this because according to this latest piece of information, the restored version of this gem of a film should be coming out worldwide on DVD / Blu Ray sometime in 2011. Hopefully it will include this documentary as a bonus... and maybe a bit of info about the soundtrack?!! Fiction Factory is currently wrapping production on a new 75-minute documentary, STARTING OUT: THE MAKING OF JERZY SKOLIMOWSKI’S “DEEP END”. Skolimowski’s highly praised coming-of-age drama DEEP END has enjoyed a cult following ever since its initial release in 1970. The film was recently restored in HD by Bavaria Media and CinePostproduction in Munich and will come out on Blu-ray and DVD all over the world in 2011. The new documentary was written and directed by Robert Fischer. It will feature in-depth interviews with director/writer Skolimowski (filmed at his house in Masuria, Poland), director of photography Charly Steinberger (filmed in Grünwald and Munich), and the film’s two stars, Jane Asher and John Moulder-Brown (both filmed in London, pictured below). Also on board are actor Christopher Sandford, production designer Anthony Pratt, and editor Barrie Vince.John Moulder Brown (age 57) and Jane Asher (age 64)... don't they both look great? John Moulder Brown in "Deep End" 1970: Jane Asher, same 1970: Can't wait for this to be finally released. I'm a huge fan of Skolimowski's work and especially this film, for more than one reason! Many thanks! -Bud

While I shant hazard a guess as to why you're a huge fan of this film for more than the one, obvious, 'C.S.-related', reason, I suppose I might ask you: Would the 'additional' reason's initials happen to be "J.A." by any chance?. ;D Ah, the film is known for its beautiful aesthetics. There were certainly some beautiful people acting in it! and Jane Asher is sooooooo cool I saw her on YT giving an interview in 2008, she seems like a great and groovy lady indeed! I was going through my archived e-mails and stuff and found this short quote by Paul Samwell Smith about the soundtrack. It's taken from the now defunct mailing list of the original catstevens.com, I think in those times it was known as the TFTT website, we're talking 1998 or something.. and Paul Samwell Smith came on the list and left a few messages including this one: "By the way "Deep End" was a movie made by Jerzy Skolimowski featuring Jane Asher and Diana Dors. Cat Stevens and I were just finishing Tea for the Tillerman (summer 1970) and Jerzy wanted some music for his film so we spent literally twenty six hours without break in the studio to do the music for him. But I Might Die Tonight was the song Steve wrote specially for it, and was included on the TFTT album. I'm sure you know all this, but what the hell. These movie makers always want the music by yesterday." Thought some of you might enjoy that short quote. Also, word on the street is that the DVD/Blu Ray should be released by BFI in the UK and by Criterion in North America. So prepare your wallet as Criterion releases are known to be expensive. The good thing is Criterion always puts a lot of care in their releases, beautiful artwork, booklets and bonuses. Definately something to look forward to.

I've been reading a fascinating book called "Jerzy Skolimowski - The Cinema of a nonconformist" written by professor of Contemporary Cinema, Ewa Mazierska. There is a whole chapter on how Skolimowski used music in his various films. Here's part of what she says about the use of Cat's song in Deep End:
"A different approach is offered in Deep End where, for the first time in his career, Skolimowski used a theme song - But I Might Die Tonight from the album Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens, released in 1970. (...) The score in Deep End plays two interconnected functions. One consists of rooting the story in British youth culture of the 1970s; the second to act as the voice of the soul of the main character, Mike.
Both roles are perfectly fulfilled by the songs of Stevens, who in the 1970s was one of the biggest stars of British pop music. Stevens sang about romantic love, relationships between children and their parents, searching for one's place in the world and lost innocence. Perhaps more than any other pop music of the time, Stevens's songs were associated with a certain vulnerability and quest for spirituality typical of young people of this generation, to which Mike also belongs. Moreover, the very title of the song foreshadows the deadly ending to the film. It is one of the many signs of approaching death (...) But I Might Die Tonight is already played in the title credits and in the film's first sequence, showing Mike cycling to work. Later we hear short fragments of this song on various occasions when Mike is on his own, for example cleaning dirty baths in the bathhouse. When Mike enters into a relationship with another person, the song fades out, suggesting that the approaching death looms in his subcounscious."
BTW, it's an excellent book for any lover of Cinema, especially if you like European films and directors. Although it is obviously written for film students, it's quite an easy and interesting read. Recommanded!

Thank you, Charles. Fascinating analysis of the use of Cat's song in the movie. In my mind, the soundtrack can make or break a movie, and it seems that "But I Might Die Tonight" really helped to make this movie.

Deep End is finally released in the UK and hopefully globally this Friday... it'll be great to see it in its fully restored glory. I remember grudgingly paying 18 quid for a grainy VHS copy in the 70s that looked like it had been filmed underwater. Some of it actually was of course, but you get my drift!! There's also an interesting piece in today's Guardian newspaper on the film. Apparently the acting was largely improvised, Skolimowski was a very free and creative Writer/Director. Though the shock ending seems to have distanced its audience. GREAT soundtrack :-)

Many thanks George! The VOD version has been available in France for some time. But you need a French IP address to view it. Here's the trailer of the restored version by BFI. Looks fabulous:
Should be out on DVD/Blu Ray in July.

ugh.... grrrr......They had to chose the ugliest and raciest DVD cover. To reduce this movie to an exploitation B-film is extremely unfair and untrue. And that cover certainly gives that impression. Maybe they wanted to give it that "retro" look. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Here it is boys and girls. Well... for those of you in Europe and those of us here who can read a DVD/Blu-Ray on our PCs or stand-alone players, the pre-order of "DEEP END": ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Info from amazon.co.uk Deep End: 3-Disc Collector's Edition [DVD + Blu-ray] £12.93 This title will be released on July 18, 2011. Pre-order now! DEEP END 3-Disc Collector's Edition A Film by Jerzy Skolimowski The Swinging Sixties are over and the long, grey morning after has only just begun. But there are still eye-opening new experiences in store for wet-behind-the-ears teenager Mike (John Moulder-Brown) when he takes a job at a rundown London swimming baths. After one of its more mature visitors steamily attempts to take advantage (Diana Dors, in a superb cameo), he gradually wises up to find himself adrift with an increasingly obsessive interest in sassy, self-assured, co-worker Susan (played by a seductive Jane Asher). Giddily he follows her into the grimy underbelly of Soho for a long dark night of the soul -- soundtracked with great intensity by legendary Krautrock band Can. Will Mike sabotage Susan's relationship with her fiancé and get together with her instead? Jerzy Skolimowski's compelling, darkly poetic portrait of Britain in an era of uncertainty and changing sexual mores now makes a long overdue return to the screen in a beautiful new digital restoration. Contains exclusive bonus DVD featuring Q&A with Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown. ExtraFeatures: * Dual Format Edition: includes both the Blu-ray and the DVD of the film and the extras * New High Definition restoration * Starting Out: The Making of Deep End (2011, 73 mins): an in-depth documentary about the making of the film, featuring interviews with Jerzy Skolimowski, Jane Asher, John Moulder Brown, and principle crew * Deep End: The Deleted Scenes (2011, 8 mins): featurette about sequences removed from the film * Careless Love (Francine Winham, 1977, 10 mins): Rare and disturbing tale in which a woman (Jane Asher) takes drastic actions to keep the affections of the man she loves. * This 3-Disc Collector's edition contains and exclusive bonus DVD featuring Q&A with Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown. * Illustrated booklet featuring new sleevenote essay by David Thompson. Contains exclusive bonus DVD featuring Q&A with Jane Asher and John Moulder Brown. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Also available on regular region 2 DVD. I just pre-ordered my copy of the Collector's edition. Pleasantly surprised by the low price of this and I didn't want to wait for a North American release that will come Lord knows when, and will probably be way more pricy than the BFI release.

:)Hmm I don,t remember sexual mores changing quite in this way! But I guess it's a man thing.??!!!................ I just cannot disassociate a feeling of disquiet and distaste from any artistic critique of this film......but maybe I just need to be educated in the art of looking past my own hang-ups? ???Dunno...soz but for me this film was kinda best left where it has been ..... and I know that I must be in a tiny weeny minority as I can cannot find anyone brave enough who has shown any negative criticism or opinion..... Please be gentle with the THWACKS!!lol

I don't watch films for their artistic quality...I watch for pure entertainment. Death, weirdness, and the dark side of people is just not my idea of entertainment. When it comes to cinema, I prefer to be lifted up in some way....not left shaking my head saying "That was odd." But it doesn't matter...that's why there's chocolate and vanilla, everyone has different tastes. So to those who enjoy the movie..."Cest la vie!!"
