I found this in the articles section: For instance, I asked him about a smelly rumor concerning him. "I've heard that you once told someone that you never washed because --, " I started.
"---it takes away your body oils," he finished for me. "Yeah, that's what my dad told me. He said that when you have a cold, the obvious thing is not to wash your body. And when I do wash, I don't use soap.
"I never use soap. And that's a Swedish idea (Cat is part Swedish and part Greek), believe it or not. They hardly ever use soap on their faces. That's why they've got that kind of complexion.
"I wash, but just in cold water. Apart from the hair, which actually does get so greasy I have to do it. By the way, I hardly catch any colds at all."Cat didn't wash with soap! Gross! That sorta puts a damper on my fantasies. I hope he wore cologne at least. Do you know any interesting or quirky facts about Cat Stevens?

I wouldn't put much weight into that. Cat was most likely joking or being a little sarcastic, which I've heard was not that unusual, like didn't someone once ask Cat what "Peace Train" was about, as if it shouldn't be obvious! Cat's response, well, use your imagination.
My point being, unless you find someone who got up close and personal, who can verify any such odors, I wouldn't even consider it. HMM, lets ask Carly Simon.
Peace,Vivian

Thanks Christine. I'm looking at Cat in a whole new way now! I seriously hope this isn't true. do you know that people who eat meat have strongert bodily smells and odours? Cat says he doesnt eat meat, so probably heres nothing for you to worry about and there are alot of people who dont use soap ( they use natural oils and stuff instead). For example in South India lots of people use just oils for body care - i cant say they smell badly

This "beauty secret" is from over 30 years ago (!) -- a time when Cat wasn't so careful about the the things he said. I think it was this kind of openness that made him so vulnerable to anyone who couldn't, or didn't want, to understand his subtleties and wry sense of humor. By the way, I bet that his "not using soap" phase passed very quickly, if it ever really existed. He's just too meticulous, too much of a perfectionist.

Like I said, Cat was known to be somewhat sarcastic in his interviews, and not often serious. Hey, no matter what he used or didn't use, he always looked mighty good, I mean, not to get overly "sexual", but right, ladies??? Peace,Vivian

Ever see some of those musicians from the 60 and 70's? Many of them had that greasy hair syndrome down to a science. Ha ha ha Jaggar/ Three Dog Night/ NY Dolls/ The Romones??? Although, Cat did say he washed his hair.

I believe he quit by the time he became Yusuf. How he quit, I assume he went cold turkey, but I don't know for sure. Not many people are able to go cold turkey. Most has to quit gradulally.

Peace,Vivian I don't think followers of Islam are permitted to smoke. Well I've read that smoking is definitely frowned upon. In any case, Cat was a heavy smoker, but when he converted(reverted) he had quit. Whether or not he had outside help to aid his quitting, since he was likely addicted to nicotine, I don't know. Peace,Vivian

To my knowledge, wasting money and destroying your own health and that of others are not allowed in Islam.

To my knowledge, wasting money and destroying your own health and that of others are not allowed in Islam. I agree with Suncatcher. And just because you've seen someone who calls themselves Muslim do a particular act, it doesn't necessarily mean that the behavior is permissible in Islam. And that holds true for all faith and credos, I believe. Kareema

And it's not my fault they smoke.

They don't call themselves Muslims. They are Muslims And it's not my fault they smoke. Excellent points. Actually, it's unnecessary, and a mistake, to even mention religion. I think we can all simply agree that smoking is unhealthy, and we're glad that Cat quit. Also, each person is responsible for his or her own deeds. I'm going to leave it at that. ~Sun~
