I can't order the book until payday... which seems to get further away with each passing day, even though I know that's impossible. There is simply too much month left at the end of my money! Ah, yes, the "Heartbreak Hotel." We've all been there, I daresay. Sometimes I fear it's more like the "Hotel California" - You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave . . .For what it's worth, I have a favorite quote from Robert Kennedy about grief. I recently received the latest Journal from the Association For Recorded Sound Collections. I was pleased to see they'd reviewed my book. A little harsh in places I thought, since the book does contained the most comprehensive discography to date. I do feel that album tracks and details of the musicians involved are actually for the album sleeve. Most fans have complimented me on the detail in the book. To many Americans, Cat Stevens is the epitome of the 1970s singer/songwriter. He had enormous popularity through much of the decade and his songs are still played on the oldies radio today. What many Americans do not realize is that he had an earlier career as a swingin’, London-era pop singer who scored several top 10 pop hits in Europe and on the continent (“Matthew and Son” being the most notable). His conversion to Islam (when he changed his name to Yusuf Islam) and subsequent retirement from performing in the late-1970s was a shock to many. It came as his popularity was waning which is not to imply that that was his motivation. One of the main themes running through many of his songs was the quest for some sort of mystical enlightenment, so it should not have suprised those who were listening.
George Brown details the story in workman-like fashion in Cat Stevens: The Complete Illustrated Biography & Discography. This is clearly a fan’s book and, as such, it possesses that format’s strengths and weaknesses. On the plus side, Mr. Brown demonstrates an enthusiasm and affinity for the artist. He seems to know Stevens’ oeuvre very well, peppers the story with quotable anecdotes and tries to ferret-out little known facts about the artist. Throughout, the book is dotted with illustrations of rare records, advertisements, picture sleeves, etc, Mr. Brown has also down a few brief interviews with several people instrumental in Stevens’ early career, including his first producer, Mike Hurst, and several artists that Stevens himself produced once he was established.
However, this is not a book to come to for in depth analysis and research on Stevens music and life. The discography - billed as “complete” – merely lists singles, albums, productions, and compositions covered by others. The album section is merely a list of album titles and does not include individual tracks, musicians involved, recording dates etc. Be forewarned that it is not a “complete discography”. In addition, like a true fan, Brown does tend to gloss over controversies that have dotted Stevens’ life since he converted to Islam. The Salman Rushdie affair is portrayed as a “misunderstanding” of his statements by the mainstream media although it goes far deeper than that. Nevertheless, for those in search of basic facts and information about Stevens, delivered with the enthusiasm of a fan, this book is just the ticket.

Hello again Mr Brown, I am very happy for you that you book was reviewed. It seems people will never leave The Rusdie affair to rest. They will never accept it as a misunderstanding. Opening old wounds is all that seems to matter, and only admitting to something that never was, will make these reviewers satisfied. In their opinion, being honest and good doesn't make a biography worth reading. Mr Ianapollos is right though, this book is just the ticket, from an enthusiastic fan,writer, for very enthusiastic fans, readers, to learn about the life of our fouvourite artist. From this comment, I think you can take this review as being a complimentary and positive one. I hope this review did not dishearten you, but made you feel it was worth all the love and effort you put into this book. You made alot of people happy.

Thanks for your kind comments downunder... I sometimes wish I'd left the Rushdie affair out of the book altogether, but then I really would be glossing over. You're right, it seems that the media will never drop this. Very glad that the fans enjoyed the book :-) :-) :-)
