Cat Stevens / Yusuf and Nick Drake were both with Island Records at the same time (1969-72). Cat was a big star, and Nick was discovered 20 years after, long after his death. But, did they know each other? Anybody has any information about it? For me Drake is one of the biggest singersongwritter ever... perfect guitar player with strong lyrics.

love nick drake
i have read the patrick humphries excellent biography that came out at the end of the 90s, and while he quote cat stevens a couple of times when he want to show how cat stevens was able to become a big star thanx to the fact that he was going to play in clubs etc all the time, while nick drake, not performing at all, was unable to find any commercial success, he never say anything about cat stevens and nick drake meeting each other etc
anyway, the excellent "a skin too few" documentary will be released on dvd by the end of the year, truly a wonderful doc

someone recently told me that there are after all some live concert recordings of Nick saved... that would be cool... I guess the video footage of him would be too much to hope for, tho.

Thanks Max, I had wondered about a Cat/Nick connection as well. I'd love to watch the documentary on Nick Drake when it comes out. It's a shame Nicks music didn't get more exposure when he was alive. His music is beautiful, only a beautiful soul can produce music such as this. I've just recently started to listen to Nick Drake, and I love it.

"or are you talking about the summer of 1967 recordings he did while on vacation with his friends in southern france?"
nope
I remember one guy told me he 100 % has a live concert recording, one of those 15-20 gigs Nick did... I dunno... as you say, they would be circulating by now, I guess...
I can't believe that we only have few (not even many) photos of him, and that's it...

Nick Drake's music is ethereal....... I have a rare home recording LP of his... the sound quality isn't that great, but I'm proud to have it (coz I PAID enough for it!! &*&^^&* ) Nick Drake was extremely phobic of public performances, wasn't he? Like I probably would be. Poor guy.

Love, love, love Nick, but I really have to be in the mood for his music. I have always found it hauntingly beautiful with a profound sadness as the back drop. Gorgeous, really. Found his music quite accidentally, I was looking for something by Nick Cave-been hooked ever since. Shame the world didn't discover him until after his death-but then, maybe it was meant to be this way. As someone said, Lucy maybe, he was quite shy of being on stage...what a fragile precious soul. Seems he was always searching for and never finding his "Place To Be.." youtube.com/watch?v=9IUqN9ozmhwCello Song Clothes Of Sand Fly Place To Be Way To Blue So many wonderfully pretty songs...

I only recently discovered him and I think his music is really dark, ethereal, ambient and expresses the alienation and misery that millions feel. Cheers!

I do love fly too, but not really a fan. A lack of energy and passion no comparison with cat stevens voice. Sad end Linda

No need to comparasion, I agree that Cat and Nick were totally different artists, and in the beginings Cat was much more part of a music industry while Nick was some kind of a man "from a room"... but I am just curious if they have known each other at that time... And I disagree with opinion that Drake's voice had "lack of energy and passion"... there are just several ways how to put/show them out... and maybe Nick Drake was just too passionate and sensitive... But he was great artist, and if somebody wants to say which one is better, Cat or Nick... there is no sense in it

I disagree with opinion that Drake's voice had "lack of energy and passion"... Hey crobarbie maybe you're right, they are not comparable I know it is not the goal of the thread, it's just my point of view about Nick dracke, .maybe coz i listen too much to cat's music, other music rarely touches my heart currently; i discover drack through pink moon, the album of a musical quietude...., not my cup of tea these days ;D without hurting you friend Linda

surely nick was a better guitarist :-) Agreed. His arrangements are very complex and difficult to mimic because of all the clever finger plucking.
