I am sure this is covered somewhere here - I did a search and nothing comes up. I know a lot about Cat/Yusuf - but I don't understand, and really don't "get" the Dolly Partin connection If this is mentioned somewhere else .... please excuse me and point me in the direction of the link ? I don't know why - but they seem, to me at least, to be such total opposites. Anyone any info for me ?? Thanks all ........ Peace

Well, Dolly did do a cover of "Peace Train". Yusuf was allegedly set to meet her for a musical project when he was unfairly kicked out of the USA a few years back. Dolly did defend Yusuf against slanderous attacks linking him to terrorism, including defending him to our own Government. That's all I know.
Peace,Vivian

When I read she asked him to contribute I was quite puzzled myself - and then amused. We really know so little about the lives of the people we admire, don't we?

I think Nancy may have the name slightly wrong. I would imagine she meant to say Dolly Parton the Country and Western singer/ Actress

Oh Yup Sue - I hit the "i" button instead of the "o" button on my keyboard. My hubby tends to agree with you catty .............. Here is a link to her newer version of Peace Train ..... www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1HSSGgixnMHere is a link to one of her newer releases: music.yahoo.com/read/news/23031923 ....... it talks about Yusuf doing the guitar part as she sings Where Do the Children Play. Then she says " He did a vocal especially for me that I will always treasure." Maybe - since this album was released in 2005 - this was the project Yusuf was coming to the US to work on with her when he was deported in 2004 Who knows ? I still don't get it - LOL Peace ............. Nancy

OK guys, I am confused about this connection as well. Now, for what it is, or isn't worth... I can specifically remember back in the very late 70's DP having a small music and variety series/show. I read, both in the papers and heard on the news (LOL: there weren't items of more importance?) that she wanted to do a cover of Peace Train, and Yusuf said NO. He declined permission for her to do it on the basis that he didn't approve of her lifestyle and her "wicked bosoms". It is entirely possible that the whole story was BS from te media again, misrepresenting Yusuf. Who's to say? But when I learned about DP doing Peace Train, it did give me pause.... to wonder.... huh??? LOL LOL LOL "Wicked Bosoms" .............. that's why my hubby said to "think like a male". When I heard her singing Where Will the Children Play - I kind of cringed - don't really like the voice - or the style. Never will really get it - but oh well !!! Peace all - Nancy

Not only did Dolly cover Peace Train, there are several remixes of her version that got heavy play in the gay club scene awhile back. www.discogs.com/release/308766-Joanne

There appear to be plenty of publishers who will print just about anything to appeal to the lowest sensibilities of humankind and therefore make money. It's everyone's right to choose to spread gossip and heresay, but as we all know, this creates a very cruel and heartless world. Don't gossipmongers prefer, (if not for themselves, then at least for their loved ones), to live in a beautiful, kind world? Why doesn't the media care when they hurt the feelings and reputations of people who are sincerely trying to make the world a better place?
For the record, Yusuf would never say that awful quote, and when he went to Nashville, he took his daughter along which proves his innocent intentions, and playing guitar on Dolly Parton's cover of "Where Do the Children Play" is simply a way to build a bridge between East and West.
"There are three types of people: Those building Bridges; those bent on destroying them; and those waiting to cross" Yusuf Islam

lol i love this thread...YES DOLLY PARTON IS WICKED muscian with a gift for song writing perhaps the simplest answer to this question about there connection is this Dolly Parton was quite a big fan of cat stevens music in the 1970's- hence the few covers she's done over the years. To further this point check 2:17 minuets into this video " I was more upset... with the fact, that I wast'nt going to get anymore of those types of Cat Stevens song.Just selfish thoughts." www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDIuYryfgkss

I think of Yusuf and Dolly as kindred spirits with a surprising number of things in common. They’re both ageless, sensitive, and inspirational singer/songwriters who are iconic in the music industry. They’re spiritual, kind, outspoken, and brave. Neither one claims to be an angel, but both are wise enough to avoid the negative aspects of the music industry, and both have intact marriages that have lasted for decades. They’ve built a musical bridge across the Atlantic that openly disproves the notion that there is an inevitable “clash between cultures.” Dolly and Yusuf have shown that collaboration and cooperation between people of different faiths can be a reality, not just some theoretical dream. Mere “coexistence” pales in comparison. Dolly Parton also deserves our thanks for Yusuf being able to return to a warm welcome here in the US. It’s her bravery that gives all of us Cat/Yusuf fans the hope that he may perform here once again. I’m glad that she’ll be “implied” in Yusuf’s lyrics to “Boots and Sand,” and I hope with all my heart that those are some really terrific and very positive lyrics. I agree with Max - I prefer some of her folk, bluegrass music. Here's Smokey Mountain Memories, which can bring tears to my eyes. . . .
Oh, and these northern nights are dreary My old southern heart grows weary As I wonder how the old folks are back home But I know that they all love me And I know they're thinking of me And Smoky Mountain memories keep me strong
You know I've been thinkin' just a whole lot lately About what's been and what awaits me It takes all I've got to give what life demands Lord, you go insane if you give in to it Life's a mill and I've been through it I'm just thankful I'm creative with my hands . . .
If I'll keep looking to the Father He'll keep my head above the water While these Smoky Mountain memories keep me strong . . .
