There is a very worthwhile article about Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell (titled "The Rebel Angels") in the new Vanity Fair. It is, apparently, an excerpt from a book to be published in April titled Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon--and the Journey of a Generation, by Sheila Weller. The article has many wonderful photos of these women! Carly's relationship with Cat is discussed briefly: "She would appear at L.A.'s Troubadour for six days, starting April 6 (1971), opening for Cat Stevens, the British-raised son of a Greek-Cypriot father and a Swedish mother, who, with a tremulous voice that few but Neil Young could equal, was enjoying his first hit, "Wild World." "The Stevens-Simon shows were sold out.... "When Carly flew back to New York, Stevens did, too, and he asked Carly out. On the appointed night, she waited and waited. Before Cat finally arrived, she picked up her guitar and wrote a song for him, because "I was so excited and nervous to see him, and was wasting all this time" on those feelings, Carly recalls. Echoing the rhythms of Stevens's own songs, she sang, "Anticipation, an-ti-ci- pa-a-ation / Is making me late / Is keeping me wai-ai-ai-ai- ai-ting." "I wrote it in 15 minutes," she says. Her second smash hit was born. "Stevens reminded Carly of William Blake--"he was extremely airy in that Blake way, and spiritual." (Indeed, he was spiritual. After a near drowning in Malibu in 1975, Stevens vowed to pay God back for saving his life. He converted to Islam in 1977 and took the name Yusuf Islam.) "Cat would look at me and it would be dazzling, the reflection of all things miraculous." .... " There is a really dazzling picture of the two of them on pp 210-211 (Cat is looking at her so sweetly!), taken by her brother Peter, apparently at the same sitting as the other photo of them on this site (but I much prefer the photo in Vanity Fair). I recommend the purchase of this Vanity Fair issue to any Cat fan! Bella

Bella, thanks for the heads-up. Vanity Fair is an entertaining publication, but one that I rarely pick up.
I would never have known about this, but will run out right away & purchase the April 2008 issue!

This is the actual magazine, if it is able to get it in Germany, I will scan the article, but I don't think so. Here is only the German Vanity Fair. www.vanityfair.com/magazine/toc/2008/toc200804204THE REBEL ANGELS Bursting onto the charts in the early 70s, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon were the smart, searching, sexy voices of a new generation. In an excerpt from her forthcoming triple biography, Sheila Weller zeroes in on the relationships—with the likes of Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Mick Jagger, and (of course) Warren Beatty—that helped inspire their hits.

I tried to get this, but no one stocked it!!! Any chance you can scan them and show us? PRETTY PLEASE I was going to try to scan it when I got the magazine, but there is one problem... the picture is on the magazine fold. Cat's right arm & leg [and part of his hair] are on one side of the fold, while most of him & Carly are on the other side. I haven't figured out yet how to scan this without destroying the magazine. Maybe someone with more experience [or a better imagination ] can think of something. Sorry! joni...

Well, there's a couple of ways I would do it, either put something heavy to flatten it or take out the staples carefully and afterwards replace them, that's the only ways I can think of, then when you have both pictures scanned, put them together in a picture program or you could post both and I will have a go at it. or maybe Joanne will? But the larger amount of pixels, the better the image, as I am sure you know

Sue is right, scan each page separately, then stitch them together in your photo program.

This picture, it's not this one is it? No, Sue, although it was definitely taken at the same time. In the Vanity Fair shot, Cat is looking at Carly with an interesting, closed-lipped smile on his face, while Carly is looking directly at the camera with a very big smile [almost laughing, it appears]. His expression reminds me of someone thinking "you smart-aleck" -- with his left eyebrow raised a bit. Kind of a skeptical look. It's a very nice photo. I'm going to see if I can scrounge up an exacto knife & perform surgery on the magazine. If I can remove the picture without destroying it in the process [yikes!] I'll see if I can scan it & then figure out how to post it. Wish me luck! This is going to be a challenge all the way around, methinks! joni...

But the larger amount of pixels, the better the image, as I am sure you know Sue, I meant to answer this earlier, but got sidetracked. The magazine is a really thick, bound publication. I wish it did have staples, that would be so much easier! It's over 250 pages, and I haven't been able to come up with anything heavy enough to flatten it out & make a clean copy or scan. Still working on the exacto knife. I know I have one around here somewhere... it's just a matter of tearing everything apart until I find it! LOL joni...

Aww bless you Joni. But it seems such a shame to ruin the magazine by cutting out the pages, if the main part is on one side, and you have a flat bed scanner, would it cut too much out to have the middle of the magazine hang over the side? As much as I would love to see all of it, I would hate for you to damage the book.

Hi everyone!
I haven't checked in for awhile...unfortunately, the April Vanity Fair probably left the newsstands in mid to late April, though there might be some copies for sale on eBay.
The photo is also included in the book that the article is excerpted from: "Girls Like Us", by Sheila Wenner (the book's photo is much smaller than the one in the magazine, though). I bought the hardcover from Amazon, and it's a great read! The book lists for $28, but Amazon is selling it for just under $17. (I find all three women profiled in the book to be really fascinating, so the investment is worth it to me.)
I am insanely busy right now, or I would cut out the photo and post it now. If no one else does it before I find the time, I'll do it then.

Hi everyone, Here is the Vanity Fair photo...I was able to cut the pages pretty cleanly, but I still have a slight gap between the two parts of the photo. Sorry I don't know how to post the photo directly into this message--perhaps someone else who knows how can do it? Thanks! www.esnips.com/doc/794666e7-addc-4918-905c-ed9997595f17/CS_CarlyEnjoy! Bella

As I live in Greece there are news stands that sell foreign magazines and papers for tourists. So decided to drive to a port close to the town from which I live and to my delight I found April's Vanity Fair still on the shelf. I paid nearly 11 euros but it was worth it.Some very interesting reading besides the great picture ....... That grin sure says alot Sue, don't you think
