I was looking at ebay this morning and found an auction with a really inappropriate description: CAT STEVENS VHS video recorded 1971 Item Number: 180299378977 Item URL: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180299378977I wouldn't normally take action against such stupid people, but this one really p*ssed me off. So I sent this msg to the seller and I'm encouraging all of you to do the same. Here's what I said: Dear leeannden, Your comment about him being an Islamic terrorist is absolutely not acceptable. Not only is it extremely inappropriate to make such statements on an ebay auction, but if you have any hope of selling this to a fan or collector of Cat Stevens or Yusuf Islam, you are sadly mistaken and have really miscalculated this one. I'm asking you to remove this comment or I will have no choice but to report this to ebay. Thank you, pickledginger  |

That's appalling. I'm nearly speechless. What amazing ignorance and arrogance! Does the seller not realize that libel is a serious offense?

DONE: Heres what I said to the seller:
You need to get your facts straight. Yusuf Islam is not a terrorist, and further more, he is no longer barred from the USA. He's now free to come and go as he pleases with a full visa. Please try not to be so ignorant to the truth. Yusuf ISlam is a true man of peace.

Oh My - either this person is simply misinformed - or stupid and ignorant. We are seeing a LOT of stupidity and ignorance in the states right now ..... and it angers me to no end. What a shame - truly sad. A man of peace - a gentle soul. I hope this gets changed - or that Ebay can do something about this statement. Peace my friends ...... peace. |

I also sent an email to the seller, but am giving her the benefit of the doubt that she is misinformed. We know there are still way too many people out there who believe the same thing. How sad.

Here's the message the seller sent to me:
I was kidding. The point is that anyone could be labeled as a threat when the social climate is held hostage to fear. It is, of course, absurd to think that Cat Stevens or Yusuf Islam is a threat to anyone. I am a musician and have been a fan of his since the very beginning. (Yes, I am that old. This is strictly sarcasm. Relax, all of you.
My reply:
This is equivalent to someone saying really offensive things with a straight face and as soon as the recipient protests, the
'sarcastic one' turns around with a delayed reconsidered smile saying.... I'm only kidding. My brother does this all the time then
says I can't take a "joke". Well wasn't funny the first time and won't ever be. You know, it's really not about fear. It's about
being civil and treating people with respect.
Thank you for posting the disclaimer. That should dampen any fires coming your way.
I should note - seller did not remove the offensive sentence but added a disclaimer. Love how seller turns it around to us being the stupid ones because we're only reacting to FEAR. Wrong. I'm still pissed.

I got the same response as most of you, but decided not to pursue any further. So, maybe he was just being sarcastic, but he seems to enjoy encouraging the very fear that has haunted Yusuf for all these years.

Still think this guy is bad news. Someone who gets a thrill out of distorting the truth, is far from being a fan. He got pleasure knowing we would respond in this manner, and that is a very cold joke and sick.

He's also not a very good salesman. Doesn't he know that anyone bidding on this would be a Cat Stevens fan and would object to his comments?
If somebody wants this video, I'd suggest waiting till the last second and get it cheap. If he has to sell it for 6 bucks, maybe he'll realize how stupid his remarks were.

I got this response from the seller after letting him know that in my opinion, fear is not the enemy, but rather people like him that knowingly spread untruths:
"Perhaps I have to much respect for the intelligence of people. I imagined anyone with any common sense would know I did not mean it to be "truth". I apoligize for the overestimation."
AAAUUGGHH! What an idiot to think that strangers on eBay would "know" that he meant it as a joke!! It is people like that who scare me.

I went round and round with this person, probably 4 emails each. She's a woman about my age (50's). She insists we're all reacting to an inherent deep seated feeling of fear - Islamic terrorists, I guess. I told her she was actually pretty stupid to think an ebay auction is the place for public discourse about people's "fear" and she's just shooting herself in the foot. Ebay is a marketplace of commerce where trust in financial transactions between a seller and buyer are paramount, the most important aspect of making sure someone buys your stuff. I suggest nobody buys this from this seller, wait for the next one to come around, if you really want a video tape. I have a feeling it's exactly the same as the DVD that just came out anyway, which I'm sorry to say has the quality of an old video taping copied from TV. I'm disappointed in the quality of this disc, but maybe that's all they had to work with and all that survived from so many years ago.

What an idiot. Cant believe that someone wanting to sell Cat Stevens material obviously to Cat Steven's fans would make such an out of order comment. Seller said it was a joke but in the current climate of the world, comments like that are not funny, especially when they concern a man of peace.
