Salaam alaykom and greetings, The 'Peace Train/Angel of War" CD single is available on eBay from the UK. I purchased one last week and this appears to be an ongoing offer from sellers there. I am unsure if the PT/AW single can be found in the US, since I don't frequent record stores any more... I just wanted to get a 'hard copy' for myself rather than the internet download version. Here is a link for today: search.ebay.com/ws/search/SaleSearch?satitle=yusuf+islam&ht=1&sosortproperty=1&from=R10&BasicSearch=Peace, kareema

Salaam alaykom and greetings, Incidentally, speaking of eBay, I have learned to expect the unexpected when searching the items offered. Last week, I found a 1976 music trade magazine article that reviewed the Oakland Majikat tour concert that I had the privilege to attend! Since I can no longer recall even what day the concert was, owning this article will be a rare treat for me. I have also noticed that there are currently 2 vintage CS ringer tees available for those of us who as 'starving students' did not have enough green to purchase these souvenirs back in the day. search.ebay.com/ws/search/SaleSearch?sokeywordredirect=1&ht=1&sosortproperty=1&satitle=cat+stevens&from=R8&sacategory=11450&catref=C1Peace, kareema

It is my understanding that Peace Train/Angel of War is only available by Sony in South Africa. There are no plans as yet to release it in the States, but who knows, it may become available as an import, as as kareema stated, it's being sold on eBay. If bought from eBay, how does the monies reach Yusuf's charities??

Well thanks to some wonderful MES AMIS, I do have a copy of my own! I have seen that one on E BAY, but I am somewhat disturbed, since I doubt this guy is giving the money to charity! Usually E BAY says in winning bids go to charity, and this one says nothing of that! But congratulations on your win! Hopefully, it will be released officially in the USA, and I will gladly buy an official copy!

If bought from eBay, how does the monies reach Yusuf's charities?? It doesn't. I bought the promo CD on eBay (possibly from the same seller, although I don't know for sure) just before the downloads were available. I also purchased the download, assuring that at least the $1.99 got into the proper hands. -Joanne

Salaam alaykom and greetings,
I'm not sure how the seller in the UK is obtaining the PT/AW single. Perhaps it is available in the UK as well and subject to the same circumstances as in South Africa. I will email and find out.
In any case, I just figured I could make a matching donation to Small Kindness here at this very site, courtesy of Christine.

Usually, when an EBAY seller donates the winning bid to charity, it will be clearly stated! In this case, it isn't, and these two songs were recorded with the explicit purpose of going to charity! In all likelyhood, this is just going into someones pocket, and I really don't think that is fair, not to Yusuf, whose sole purpose of recording these songs was to help people, and certainly not to the innocent children who will be cheated out of those funds!
You know, I am STILL looking for the HOPE CD, and I have seen it on E BAY, and as much as I want it, I really don't want to go that route!

Friends, my advice (I am always giving out advice. ) is to follow the procedure of downloading it like Yusuf would probably prefer, then burn it onto a CD from your hard drive. Or we can wait until Yusuf releases an official thing. I don't want to help some guy cash in on Yusuf's generosity. I would rather have Yusuf cash in on it since he would help someone with it. Salaam alaykom and greetings,
The Cd singles are being purchased through an 'independent store' and the seller doesn't know how the store gets them.
Do we know if the stores in South Africa make a charitable donation when the CD single is purchased? If tihis is the case, then the donation is made when the store purchases the CDs and eBay dealers are just reselling their store purchases.
I do not think the PT/AW CDs are bootleg.
I'll attempt to find out more about where the eBay CD singles are coming from by contacting another seller.
****
Actually while I was emailing the sellers, I recalled that it had been announced somewhere that promo copies of PT/AW had been sent by Mountain of Light to radio stations to promote airplay... it makes sense that they would have been sent to the UK.
I am going to lay odds that these CDs on eBay are the industry promos that are now turning up in the 'independent store', most likely in London, since that is where the sellers appear to hail from.
We shall see what we shall see.

So basically what your saying is that they are selling *free CD's*, which were sent to them to promote on the radio. Then they turn it around by selling them on ebay to make a profit off of them. I'd rather hear those demos being used as promotions on the radio.

While I can't vouch for whatever radio station(s) the CD's that have shown up on eBay may have come from, I can say this. My older brother once worked as an intern at a radio station here in Boston which, way back then, had an R&B format. Record comapnies would send evrything their way as far as promos. Rock, soft pop, country, etc. Anything that didn't fit their format was simply discarded, but of course staff members (such as my brother) would nab these items before they quite made it to the trash heap. So what if someone at a station or stations somehere has maybe salvaged these from the trash? If the station(s) in question weren't going to play the tracks anyway, I'd rather we all get 'em, wouldn't you? Just my own little theory...

I agree with Christine, I would rather they be played on the radio.
Why aren't they being played on the radio? Has anyone heard either song played in the US on the radio? I still haven't heard any Cat or Yusuf on the radio since 1984 when Cat was the featured artist on "Powerline"...Do y'all remember that show?

Salaam alaykom and greetings,
Well, the radio station promo idea appears to be true since the seller that answered me said that he is getting them at a store that sells promos, etc. He said that although he cannot say for certain, it stands to reason that the promos are coming from radio stations since that is who has promos sent to them in the first place.
The seller was puzzled as to why the PT/AW single was selling so well! He was unaware that it was generally unavailable.
As far as why the promos are ending up in the record store, let's think now... Yusuf Islam just doesn't have the airplay capability that pre-1985 Cat Stevens had.
As far as I am concerned, I agree with HardheadedSofthearted, we might as well be the ones who end up with the singles... since they mean something to us.
This appears to be an established method of dealing with promos or else there wouldn't be stores that sell them. If we don't buy the Yusuf Islam ones, they are just going to end up in the bargain bin.
Personally I am glad that this seller took a chance to buy an item that he wasn't sure would sell... how else would I have acquired this historic re-release of Cat Stevens music?
peace, kareema
PS: Another seller replied to say that he received the Yusuf Islam CD in a bundle of bulk CDs he purchased. He ventures to guess that it came from a radio station, however cannot really say one way or another.

Maybe with proper advertising, Yusuf can have the same air play capacity that Cat once had!

Vivian, Yusuf does have the talent for it, but the music industry has changed so much. They don't care for quality anymore. It is all about selling sex so Yusuf would not get much exposure since Yusuf gave up the sex-symbol image 25 years ago.

Salaam alaykom and greetings,
Unfortunately, the Salman Rushdie issue has pretty much done in Br Y's wide appeal... At the eclectic music store that I periodically check out for used CDs, VHS and vinyl, Cat Stevens has a designated 'cult following'. Translation: that'd be us, the Amis.
Since I am probably the only woman in hijab that ventures in, the Gen-Xer staff there seem to recognize that I will be hunting for Cat Stevens vinyl and will ask me if I have found the entire collection yet.
Besides, as A'isha and I know, it's just not hip/in/cool/baad or whatever they say now, to be Muslim these days.
