WOW, this is WONDERFUL, but why am I not in the least bit surprized! I always knew that man was so deserving of such awards! That Nobel Peace Prize is just around the corner!

Oh, I am so happy that tears of joy are literally pouring from my eyes! It is so uplifting to hear good news that brings sweet tears rather than the things that bring bitter tears. It would be wonderful to see Yusuf receive this award. I was so elated in my heart when I read about Yusuf: "In honour of your exceptional merits and sustained humanitarian efforts as well as your support for various children's causes - including the charity 'Small Kindness' which has helped thousands of orphans and destitute families - President Gorbachev and the World Awards Committee have nominated you for the World Social Award 2003."
Yusuf, you have my support!
God be with you! And I really would like to be there in person to see this event! That would make my heart swim in ecstasy!
I am so excited beyond words!

Thanks for the heads up, Sanna. Wow, regarded with the likes of John Paul II. What an honor.
It's about time for some recognition.
Congratulations, Yusuf!

Faithful, you sound so happy today. I am glad your sadness expired. You deserve to be happy. Hey, isn't this Yusuf news so cool..being up there with some of the greatest people in the world. Hey, we all knew that Yusuf was great. It just took the world a little bit longer to catch on. The rest of the world isn't as quick as we are. Love, A'isha

I too am pleased his efforts get recognition. Who is this group? It looks like a group of mostly movie stars and popstars congradulationing each other on how nice they are. They claim they know how to get media attention. At least there should be proffessional quality camera work. Wake me for the nice pictures.

Your entitled to your own opinion of course. But, so what if it is mostly made up of movie stars and musicians. Yusuf never asked for this award. Nor do I believe had the past recipiants. So why belittle the efforts of Mikhail Gorbachev to ackowledge people whom he believes to be good humanitarians. I personally think it is a great honor for Yusuf to finally be acknowledged. Even if it isn't in the same catogory as the Nobel Peace Prize or other awards. I'm very proud and happy for Yusuf to be nominated.

Bowing to applause I gratefully accept my award as cynic of the thread. ;D
To be honest I couldn't tell you where my unease comes from. Maybe if I had ever heard of this award before? Maybe I am just reacting to a website that felt like hype and no substance, but what substance did I expect? All recognition should be given its due without me judging its worth (uhhuh, how do you give it its due without judgement?) I suppose Yusuf can use this for more than pretty pictures.
I was delighted and relieved when Smallkindness made it through UN review. When Yusuf represented Islam in a meeting of 5 faiths I was impressed. I also really liked his speech and have been pondering it for many months now.

It's gold-plated Turan!
I just think that it is such a great honour! To get an award from such a political icon as the man affectionately known as Gorby is not to be sneezed at either.
Have a great weekend everyone.

That's just what I think, George, Christine and Vivian. It's a great honour for Yusuf to be acknowledged and recognized for his humanitarian work! And I guess the World Social Award isn't that bad a prize either as it is presented by Gorby, a man of great merit! Have a great weekend everyone. Thanks George, the same to you! Love, Sanna

Viv, is there a competition of who is the best do gooder? ~~~ I am going to tell you guys about something I experienced last night in chat. A guy showed up just bursting to tell everyone about his collection. He said he had coffee with Yusuf a couple weeks ago. He bought some gold records and the Ovation guitar from the Majikat tour from Yusuf. We wondered why, knowing Yusuf has said Mohammad had been trying to buy those back. The guy said after the latest earthquake in Turkey Yusuf emptied his bank accounts and was out of cash. So he sold these to this guy for 50K. Now there is no way to know how accurate this story is. And the guy later started privatily getting a tad suggestive with some women which raises my skeptism even higher. The thing is that from what little I know of Yusuf the story sounds quite plausible.
For having that reputation I support Yusuf. Which I realize is what the award is about, showing support.
Marty once commented that Yusuf still has that desire to stand out in front of a crowd. He has just modulated it into a way to help other people. That is an admirable thing. This award kind of awards that.
Ah well. George, is my award a gold plated cow patty? Hope you all are having a lovely weekend.

Hi Turan, I could be wrong, but then you sound a bit skiptical of his story as well. But from all the reports I have read in the past. Yusuf had sold all of his Gold records long ago. As for the Ovation guitar, I also heard he gave that to Ian Hunter of Jethro Tull fame years ago. If Ian stlll has it is any ones guess. (Someone here said that it is now in the Boston Hard Rock Cafe.) My theory to this person on chat, is that he is just a exaggerator and was just making a game of pulling everyones leg. Though as I said, I could be wrong. Yusuf seems to love his children dearly and knowing how one of them so dearly wishes to locate all the old gold records. I can not see Yusuf selling them out from under Mohammad. But even so, it's an intersting story, thanks for telling us about it. Out of curiousity did he mention which gold records they were? Turan, I don't mean this as being disrespectful to you in anyway, but that guy in Catchat sounded like he was knee-deep in bullsh*t..just trying to impress the girls in the room.
No, I don't think Yusuf would go and sell stuff to some stranger when he knows that his son is trying to acquire such things.
Skeptical, cynical? Sure, it pays to ask questions. I ask a lot of questions and am skeptical about most of what folks tell me, even if I don't let them know.
Love, A'isha

LOL, I didn't say I believed him. I said it sounded plausible for Yusuf to put himself in a cash bind and to sell some items of nostalgic worth (presuably with his sons ok) in order to help others. The guy was using Yusuf's reputation. I was making a point of Yusuf's reputation.

Unless there was a life and death emergency, where cash was desparately needed, there is no way Yusuf would have sold his old records and guitars from under his children! He sold that stuff before they were even born! That guy is pulling your leg! MAYBE he bought something from someone else, that could have once belonged to Cat! But there is no way of knowing for sure, now, is there!

You know, receiving the World Social Award is nothing to sneeze at. Yusuf has put forth a lot of dedication which has poured from his heart with a lot of sweat, tears and pain. The "award" is not the epitome of one's goal that I am elated about. I am enthusiastic about his achievements and his efforts give me such happiness in my heart that I don't have adequate words to express my gratitude. I applaud his love and work to help uplift lives that would not receive help in any other way. And this award is only a tiny microscopic symbol of my appreciation for his life's work in helping our world. He continues to help humanitarian efforts which has helped thousands of people! There are not that many people in the world who are in the position to help that many people. I praise God for bringing Yusuf to our world. I wish to thank President Gorbachev and the World Awards Committee for recognizing Yusuf and for nominating him for the World Social Award 2003.
God bless you, Yusuf!
With love and continued support, Faithfullight
