Think he was very unhappy then but he was then already very bussy with Islam and was taking goodby from being a star.Regii

I also think he was saying goodbye to the "star" life. His conversion to Islam was not well recieved by the public and he had been hurt by bad press. He wrote "Well if you don't love me, maybe I don't love you." I believe he wanted people to accept him as he was...what did his religion have to do with it? And the line "if you would just take me back, c'mon open up your heart again..." leads me to assume he was talking to his audience. He wanted everyone to understand he was a human being and had his own choices to make and his own life to lead. I personally...was pissed. I couldn't believe after all those years he would just go off and leave me. I really took it to heart. I'm over it now, but it took 30 years of growing up. Mind you, I never stopped listening to his music, I simply held a grudge inside. I was very selfish, but I think everything has worked out for the best. If he and his music had slowly faded away (like many artists do), he may never have come back and boy am I glad he's back!!! ;D ;D Simply an opinion---Richina

HA HA HA very funny Richina ;D ;D ;D ;D You Wish! I didn't mean for y'all to analyze them. I just wondered what was YOUR FAVORITE. I mean I Love My Dog, The First Cut is the Deepest, he could have written Last Love Song anytime in the 60's and 70's and stuck it on the album. I don't think a writer's work necessarily reflects what's going on in his life all the time......but he's written some damn good heartbreak songs. So what IS your favorite and try not to mention his religion or analyze it cause we're talking Cat Stevens not Yusuf Islam. I LOVE MY DOG? Now that's a pretty good revenge heartbreak song but he doesn't kill her like in Lady D'Arbanville. By the way I'm watching RESCUE ME on FX and Patti is pretty good in her role. (Seasons 3 and 4)

I love my dog was always one of my faves, but I never really considered it to be a heartbreak song, but that's okay. HMM, don't know. Somehow Lady Darbanville and Sweet Scarlett come to mind.
Peace,Vivian

Sue, I meant left me "professionally", " musically", etc. ; you know..no more Cat or his music!! And maybe I did over analyze, and maybe I didn't see the favorite part at the beginning of the thread....thorry, thorry, thorry! But as a matter of fact, that song did get me through a little problem with a guy. It gave me a lot of courage to move on. But I think I like "How Can I Tell You" as one of my fave "heartbreak" songs.

"How Can I Tell You" is mine, although it may not really be a heartbreak song? Richina - I am with you. I absolutely took his departure personally. It didn't take me 30 years to get over, and like you, I never stopped listening to or defending him, but I was a bit angry. It's good to be over it, isn't it?

Jane it is totally wonderful to be over it!!! It's good to know I wasn't the only one that took it personally!! And yes, I never quit listening or caring about him. (just mad he never made any more music) But, I'm good ....especially after the LA show....sheesh, I'm a Cat-nut!! ;D ;D excuse me, Yusuf-nut!!

I think HERE COMES MY BABY is the one with the most cheerful melody. I like the version by the Mavericks, the video has a camel go by as a site gag in the beginning:) www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsK0hz2ABbk

Great topic, Sue.
Among several possible choices, I guess I'll go with a favorite heartbreak song of a different sort...
"Well you’ve cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air Will you keep on building higher, ‘til there’s no more room up there? Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry? Will you tell us when to live; will you tell us when to die? I know we’ve come a long way, We’re changing day to day, But tell me, where do the children play?"
He really does seem to sing this with a broken heart.

"Where Are You?" is one of my favorite of his heartbreak songs, although it probably sounds funny to call a song that makes me cry a favorite. His voice sounds so sincerely desperate, so lost and sad and plaintive. I love that he could be so brave to always wear his heart on his sleeve, not try to be tough and cool all the time. It's a double heartbreak song in a way, because it didn't do well for him which I'm sure was sad for him, I know it breaks my heart to hear him pour everything into a song and find out it went nowhere sales-wise!

I love the music by Cat Stevens, when he was the young and handome singer/songwriter, and I think that my passion for him was for hit songs like Wild World, Father and Son, Where Do The Children Play all speak a message for peace and love. My favourite songs by Cat are some with broken-hearted ones. The first of those that follows, first: The View From The Top

The second one of this selection is taken from his album New Masters is Smash Your Heart. New Masters was Cat's second album, but failed to make the charts. My third choice of heartbreaker is Mum's favourite song "I'm Gonna Be King. All those songs were great heartbreakers.
How about "Time/Fill My Eyes" from Mona Bone Jakon

The broken heart song that really hit me hard is Sweet Scarlet.
"All I knew was with her then, no couldn't see the time As we drank down the wine to the last Sweet Scarlet How was I to wonder why or even question this Underneath her kiss I was so unguarded Every bottle's empty now and all those dreams are gone Ah, but the song carries on...so holy "
I tear up every time I hear it.

I have a few more favourite Cat Stevens heartbreakers here, some that are on Tea For The Tillerman, Mona Bone Jakon and many of his other albums. First of all, Hard-Headed Woman is quite a sad song, but one of Mum's faves, and which the song has the lines,"I know many fine feathered friends, but their friendliness depends on how you do. They know many sure fired ways, to find out the one who pays and how you do.

Sad Lisa is quite sad, but the words are beautiful, meaningful and true. In my early era, I sang this once to my uncle Peter, he was in hospital, suffering from a fractured skull. On one occasion, we went and visited hime at the Atkinson Moorly in 1978, and he was still in pain, so I held his hand, and sung this song, not with my zither, but just my vocals. Sadly, Uncle Peter died in early 1983, and could be hearing this one in Heaven.

Father and Son is another of my favourite songs as well. The way Cat sings the song is totally uplifting. The first bit starts off with him singing the low notes in the father, and the next part, he sings the high notes. This one also, is a heartbreaker, with acoustic guitar riffs that really sound like the father and son having a conversation together, and the lyrics are also true and meaningful as they sound ever timeless today.

How Many Times is another feature of "Heartbreakers" taken from the Foreigner album back in 1973. I was eleven years young, and heading into my teens. This beautiful ballard I think, says it all, and kind of refers to his long convalesence of TB in 1968 when he was nineteen years old. I think that he was referring to the drink, and in the line that says "How many times must I drink the same old drink, and dream the same old dreams, that I do" He seemed a very unhappy person during those days.

"How Can I Tell You" is probably my favorite heartbreak song. He can't tell her he loves her, because she's not there. Also, whenever he talks, he's always talkin' to her and he's sad that she can't hear. Awwwwwww!

I agree with you, Richina, now that's also a heartbeaker. That song "How Can I Tell You" is very touching, with the most beautiful and memorable lyrics on it, but it's a bit sad. I like the part with the lines "I need to know you, need to feel my arms around you, feel my arms surround you, like sea around a shore." Those words lift my heart, and makes me feel like I'm close to him. His music is heartfelt
