Cat Stevens Back on Stage after 25 Years
By Anthony Barnes, Showbusiness Editor, PA News
Former chart star Cat Stevens performed his first concert for more than a quarter of a century tonight.
The singer performed his well-loved 1971 track, Peace Train, among a handful of songs as he headlined a show in London to celebrate the Islamic schools he founded 20 years ago.
The star – now known as Yusuf Islam – performed at the Royal Albert Hall, a venue he last played more than 30 years ago.
He gave up music in the late 70s after converting to Islam but recently started taking tentative steps back into the industry by recording a new version of Peace Train for a charity album.
He has also made a number of other religious recordings.
During his time away from music he has become one of Britain’s best known figures in the Muslim world and set up his Islamia schools.
Taking the stage of the Albert Hall tonight, he said; “We’re at this spot again – maybe some of you might remember the last time I was here. It was 1972.
“I think it was the foggiest night in London and I don’t know how many of you found your way here. We’re here today and times have changed. A lot of dreams for me have come true and we’re here to celebrate 20 years of Islamia school.”
Among the five songs Islam performed was a new track for a children’s album called I Look, I See and a follow up to his song, The Wind, from his Cat Stevens days, called Wind East And West.
The audience of young and old was mainly Muslim, but included some fans from his early days who have been largely deprived of music since his religious conversion in 1977. He said: “I’m grateful that you managed to fill this hall, that was worrying me. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
The concert also included US rap act Native Deen (correct) and former boxing champion Prince Naseem Hamed appeared on stage to talk about his religion.
Cat Stevens recorded a string of hits during his chart career, including Morning Has Broken, Moon Shadow and Matthew And Son.
In recent years Boyzone had a hit with his song, Father And Son.
