I need to get this off my chest... I always believed that Stevens would never have abandoned his fans but was scared away by someone that felt his power thru his music could create a movement during the 70's .... This is a longtime feeling I have kept to myself.

The 1960s and 1970s were a tumultuous period for the United States, with the Cold War, Vietnam War and Civil Rights causing massive public unrest. Music became innately tied up into causes, influencing the masses...

Yes... the war was over but the lingering memories were still there... Lennon claimed a self-imposed "retirement" in 1975 to raise his son Sean, Lennon reemerged in 1980 with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered less than one month after its release. Here is some background... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon

Back in the 70s, Cat Stevens was my one and only idol who was a star. His persona was really something that I'll never hear again, but will always remember him by. I think that what intrigued me at that time, was his image that we all adored and wanted to see, but didn't last very long. He walked away from all that, because his devoted fans were mystified, unable to understand why he gave it up for religion. I had a crush on the Cat.

Here is some background... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon I know who John Lennon was. I was born in 1958 and I'm well aware of 70's history. As a Beatles fan, I became quite familiar with Lennon's politics as well as his tribulations. I take Yusuf Islam at his word as to why he left the music industry until very recently. He felt his life as a popstar and his new "reversion" into Islam were at odds, so he left. I don't think there's anything more to be made of it.

I don't think there's any mystery here. Why is it hard to understand why someone would want to give it all up? It was obvious from the songs that he was searching for something. Also I've never understood the fans attitude, mystified, angry or bewildered. Feeling sad I can relate to but we had several very good albums and in my case had been lucky enough to attend several concerts. I just felt sad that it was the end of an era and hoped Cat/Yusuf would go on to enjoy a good life.
