Could he or did he ever have the ability to read music?

I have a vague recellection reading that Cat in the EARLY years could not read music. But I think in later years, Post TB days, he could. Not sure.
Peace,Vivian

Ok, I thought I heard him say in a recent concert that he could not music. However, I can't find the video on Youtube anymore.

Maybe you're thinking of this interview with Klaus Voorman from this thread Re: *** Yusuf on German TV ***. Both Klaus and Yusuf say they can't read music just after the 3:18 mark.

He can write it but not read it? When he was sick with TB, there is a well known picture of him sitting in bed , with his guitar, writing music....I thought. Great interview, I loved seeing it again!

That's a great point, Richina. And it would also explain why Vivian had the impression he could write music after the TB. Here's a photo from then: . Maybe he's writing lyrics and guitar chords, but not the melody, harmony, or parts for other instruments...

Do you know what's on the PJ's? I can't make it out from this photo... Thanks for providing the photo, Sun! I believe that those pajamas depict horses and/or Cowboys 'n' Indians. I seem to recall that Christine identified the pattern on them as such (maybe via a photo enlargement?) several years ago. In any case, those are very cool P.J.s, young "Mr. Cat"! -Bud

He can write it but not read it? I know, isn't that funny?! Doesn't seem like that would be possible, does it? Then again, Yanni can't read music, either, and listen to the wonderful music that he's created! I think people like Cat (and Yanni), who may not have the formal training in music, have the "gift" of creating it in their own unique way. And in an aside - OMG - you guys really enlarged the photo to see what was on his pajamas??? ROFL! ;D

I know that Christine can clarify the issue, though! (I agree, Jan, we sure do make fine points out of all things Cat/Yusuf!) ;D -Bud

Ha Ha Ha Bud, I must have a case of sometimers aflicting me right now. You remember that condition right? I am sure you are correct in your memory of this, but I can't seem to recall it. Maybe when my sometimers disappears again, I will be able to recall it again. It's hell losing our memories isn't it?
As for the pajamas... it seems right, noting that was around the time when he wanted to compose that western musical.

However he did it, his music and lyrics are work of a genius. Now about those 'pajamas'. I thought it was 'pyjamas'. ???Anyway 'pyjamas', 'pajamas', who cares. ;D Might do a spell check at the end. I think the print on the 'pyjamas' are chinese red dragons. Jane, yes it's been a very long week. I think it's a good idea to get into your pyjamas now, and have a good nights sleep. I think I will do the same. Don't want you climbing the walls. ;D It's alright dear, I know the feeling. ;D

Well, in all honesty, when Cat was ill with TB, he survived it, even though he was literally close to death. When he returned in 1970, he revitalised himself, growing his long hair and beard, wearing jeans and T shirts, and coming back with an image that really made us all wild, beguiling his good looks, and listening to a sweet and cool persona in those days. When he quit music, it shocked the whole world. I, for one thing, was very upset when his convert to religion changed his life. Since then, he returned again, with new material sounding like the Cat we all knew in the 70s.

He was an inspiration to us all, and we all loved those great songs he wrote in that decade. Every song had a true and meaningful message in them, the message of truth, hope peace, love and understanding. I think that phase 2 of his second career was the one that really took off, making him the real, true "superstar" But in the end, he began to realise there was more to life than music, when he changed his name, his image and of course, his persona.
Then, in 2006, came phase 3, when Yoriyos, his son brought him back to his guitar again, but in a completely different way. Lying on the couch, he picked it up once more, and bringing back the music of where he first started in the 60s, remained timeless today as it was before. He's still the dear man now, and will always be. Let's hope this musical will be a great production. Can't wait to see it on DVD.

When I was in my late teens/early 20s, I had a dream of becoming a musician -- singer/songwriter. Just teenage dreams, I guess. But although I did read music, had several years of piano lessons and a few guitar lessons too, I found it more effective to devise my own "shorthand" method of notating both the music that I wrote and that I interpreted, playing popular songs "by ear" rather than investing in the sheet music. So, if you see a young Cat "writing music" it doesn't mean he's actually got printed staff paper in front of him, jotting down eighth-notes. I think he was more about the lyrics, and maybe dashed down a chord progression so he wouldn't forget. That's how I did it. It's a great question. I've wondered that about him -- just how great a musician was/is he? Not terribly well trained, just talented -- some people do tend to just pick it up and invent their own system. I was mostly self-taught, too, so I can identify. I read in an interview somewhere (probably on this site) that people had offered to teach him how to play guitar better, but he was happy with the way he did things. And I wholeheartedly agree--technical virtuosity is nothing without passion. And hello, dear Majicatters -- this is my first post.
