Today, I picked up the new releases of Mona Bone and Tillerman on the 'Back To Black' series. Since my old copies have long expired and as I still have my antique HMV Stereomaster, I thought I'd give it a treat. Wow, what sound quality and on very chunky vinyl. A shame about the bar-codes on the sleeves and lack of decent inners but a nice blast from the past... recommended!
Best

I always liked the sound of records and I miss them a little -- I never minded the pops (I actually liked them) and the little hiss, and I liked watching the needle float over the record. I don't miss how easily they got ruined and un-playable, (thanks to my brothers) but I do miss the rest of the vinyl experience. However I'm not going back to them! No room to keep them and I'm too used to being able to listen in the car! That would be a heck of a player to be able to shove a 33 rpm into in the car!

I've bought a couple of Cat bootlegs lately, and the first thing I do when they arrive is play them. There is just something about looking at the sleeve, holding the disc, and the carefulness of it all. Mind you, I wasn't always so particular about how I handled my records. I wish I had been, I've got some that would be valuable if they were in better shape. However, when I get Cat albums I still go for the original pressings, even though that 180 gm vinyl is nice!

Where do you get the bootlegs? I save little bits of my paychecks to get things like that but I don't know where to find them. Is it a secret? I'm so much of a babe in the woods about the coolest things!!

I don't necessarily go for original pressings like our friend Richina, but the ones I have found were pretty reasonable.

Isn't it great to hold an album... you can read the print, lyrics etc... and even the smell is great!
Good ol' eBay for bootlegs... considering that the original U.S. pressed discs were so limited it's a wonder that they survive at all. I recommend GEMM for vinyl bootlegs too, though at all sorts of prices when I last looked. The ultimate vinyl bootleg is Live in Sydney which was produced in Australia in very low numbers and I want one!!! Australian ebayers stay poised!!!
Once a vinyl junkie... always

I, too, have found my bootleg albums on ebay. "The Hoaxer's Midnight Daydream" (Peter Weder prod.) is there right now. I already have it along with "This Gift Born of Us...." (Catnip), and "Chapter IV". I use George's book as a reference so I can date them, it has been invaluable. I love finding these little gems. As far as 180 gm vinyl goes, I recently purchased the "Majikat" album. It's quite beautiful and there's 1 up for auction now. I waited months to buy it because of the price. The cheapest on ebay was $40 + s/h, but I found it on Amazon for $30 + s/h. I decided to treat myself for my birthday and now the dang thing is at a $7.99 bid on ebay! Go figure! I've picked up some different 45's lately and even found a really neat CS mousepad. Ebay feels kinda like a cyber-space garage sale....guess that's why I like it. I'm just a "junker" at heart! ;D Happy hunting!!

Once a vinyl junkie... always Best George George, I agree - there is nothing like good old vinyl albums. I don't have a lot of them anymore, but it was always an EVENT when I bought a new one! And when you opened it and found that even the paper sleeve had graphics and notes on it? Heaven! Even with all their flaws, they are charming. To this day, when I play my "Teaser and the Firecat" CD, I still expect to hear "Bitterblue" and "Rubylove" skip in the same places as my album did back in the 70s. Ah, memories... It is just not the same with a CD, not to mention that 50-year-old eyes cannot easily read the 8-point font that those little booklets are printed in! And now so many people go 100% digital. Convenient yes, but what do you actually hold? Jane PS - George - I'm bringing the Starbucks CDs with me when I visit next month, if Chris hasn't told you yet. I'll be seeing him and Annie 1st week in October.

Thanks Richina... glad to hear the reference came in handy.
Thanks a lot Jane for the Starbucks CD. I owe you one.
When I bought the two albums the other day from my friendly neighbourhood record shop, the girl behind the counter said they sell as much vinyl as CD's. With all the retro-style reissues and things like Majikat... I picked up an Amazon copy Richina but perfectly happy considering some greedy retailers prices. I think that vinyl will live long and prosper.
Keep rocking

George and All, I find this entire "De...vinyl" thread to be entirely "De...lightful". Thanks for the great memories of when our recordings were vinyl. It's fun to realize that we all shared the same impressions of our beloved 33's and 45's: from the sights... to the feel... even to the smell. -Bud

I am with George & Richina. I love vinyl. It actually took me a while to venture over to CD's when they first came out. I love the whole concept of a vinyl record. The look, the feel, the smell. And even the sound is much warmer to my ears, than a CD. CD's are so anteseptic perfect and I love them for the ease of them. But when I really want to listen to my favorite LP's. That is what I put on. I still have most of my old records. Even the old warped ones. One day I will have to get rid of them, but for now they still sit in a closet. As for my record player, it still works like a charm.
Oh and as for Gemm, that is where I purchased most of my boots. Whats nice about Gemm, you don't have to battle others to purchase an album with the chance of it skyrocketing before your eyes..

I still have all my vinyl and in good condition I'm happy to say. The old stereo is still in the living room, though not used too often. Half the pleasure for me was always the album cover and the artwork ;D
