great lyrics, innit? seriously, i was listening Izitso the other night, i hate electronic music, drums machine etc but anyway is interesting how innovative this piece of music was for 1977... herbie hancock got a hit in the early 80s with something very similar to this song... but cat stevens was already there as much as i hate this kind of music, you have to say that sound like contemporary music, something people in the dance club scene did for years and years almost until today

I agree, but it does lower the general tone of the album, Izitso, which itself is quite underrated.

Hey no...I don't think it lowers the tone of the album. I always thought that Cat was experimenting and he was on the edge like david Bowie always is.
I think this was an offering and a possibilty of where things may head...by Cat

I think Was Dog is great. It's not typical Cat Stevens, I love the humour. It was actually a bit of a cult track in some clubs and of course, "Jellybean" Benitez liked it.

It doesn't lower the tone of the album it is just a very drastic contrast to the other songs, but I don't mind that. Does anyone know if this song charted? If so what position did it get to? I mean Cat's version of course not the cover version!!

I once saw a real dog cross the street with a doughnut in its mouth. A few years ago. Coming from the direction of a convenience store.
Cracked me up.

I remember not listening to this track back in the day.
Now it's one of my favorites. It's similar to that hit "Popcorn" in the same genre. Actually I accidentally found a song that I liked from a Persian 70s pop album on the internet the other day. It was redone this year by a Persian techno dance trance artist. Amazingly I like the new version of Tanha Tooye Iroon in the same way I like Was Dog.
I know what you're saying, italianrover... about wondering where the dog is barking from. Even when you know from experience when it is going to bark.
I like the dog/donut illustration in the album jacket too.

Albums jumped upward in sound clarity in late 1975, 1976. Not necessarily a good thing for all music, but it really helped with the jazz sound CS was going for on Izitso.

I think this is the only song in wich Cat plays drums. Isn't it? Do anyone knows anything about this version? Maybe you, George? Ale.

Hi Ale,
I believe Cat has played percussive instruments on a few of his songs, not always credited. He definitely played drums on O Caritas, which is credited and there may well be others. The version of "Was Dog" that you mention is not typical Cat Stevens. To my ear, the 12" version doesn't differ greatly from the album version. If it does it's very subtle. It did well on the Disco scene and got covered by Madonna-collaborator John Benitez (Jellybean) and others. A real cult "hit". One thing I do know is that on a good hi-fi system it can traumatize the pet Cat :-) Best regards, George

Hi, George! According to the sleeve notes, Cat's "percussive instruments" included drumsticks on studio speakers, a metal tea tray, the body of his guitar, and maybe a couple of coins. You're right - this is a great read. Thank you!

Absolutely Lucy and the tune always brings a smile to the face! Changes IV is particularly raucous from a percussive point of view and probably involved the former Cat shaking a jar of M&M's! No expense spared on some of those ingenious percussive devices suncatcher! Have a great sunny weekend too!
Cheers for now

At the risk of beating this theme to death (pun intended ), I just read a March 31, 2007 post from Lucy that had the following excerpt from Pete Townshend's Time is Passing: Re: Lyrics that reached out and grabbed you-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm playing my guitar while my sister bangs the jar The glass sets up a sound like people laughing It's going to my brain and it's easing all my pain I must hear this sound again 'cause time is passing . . . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I thought it was fitting. Hope you have a great weekend, too, George! ~Sun~
