Hm, I did not notice this on Majicat, sorry if somebody has posted already (from the movie "The Invention Of Lying" by Ricki Gervais, 2009.)

Hmmm, not bad at all. I haven't heard it here before. Of course it can't compare to the distinct voice we know and love, but always interesting to hear an other artist perform his songs. Don't know much about music details, but is that an electric, bass guitar I hear along with the piano? Different edge, but I prefer CS's coming down hard on the keyboards, and Gerry Conway doing what he knows best, going bananas as someone else has described him. ;D Thanks Crobabie.

Well, that rendition of CS's song could have been a little more upbeat by Mr Costello, but you're 100% correct!! Cat's original song was played in a way of his own version, featuring Cat himself on piano, with Alun Davies on guitar, Jean Roussell on piano, and Gerry Conway's drum role, and Alan James on bass. His distinctive style was a persona, gentle, smooth, and geniusly brilliant. We'll never hear anything like it in the end

Of course no cover of a Cat song will ever be the same as the Cat version. No cover is ever the same as that of the original. However, I have always liked Elvis Costello and I like this cover. I think he stayed true enough to the original for me to like it.
Thanks for finding and posting, Barney!

Thanks for posting this , Barney. I had been trying to find this. I like Elvis Costello and had been curious to hear his cover, but couldn't really bring myself to watch the film! I like his cover, but as with everyone else- it does not come close to the original, of course! My husband went to school with Elvis Costello, but more impressively my husband's former boss went to school with one Steven Georgiou

Are you telling us that the Steven Georgiou is the one we all know here, who now goes by the name of Yusuf!!! WOW!!! I guess you're not going to tell us who your husbands boss was. ;D

Thank you so much for posting that - I was very curious to hear it as well. Once you get over the shock of it not being Cat I actually think it's very good. I love me some Elvis too. I'd much prefer hearing this cover on the radio than most of what I do hear on the radio. But the piano on Cat's version was more melodic. It's a different vibe but still good anyway. I kind of like the way he did the harmonies. We're all in agreement that obviously nobody can do a Cat cover and compare to the real thing. However, when Yusuf does a cover - he manages to improve the original song. Am I biased, do ya think?

I don't know if I would say he improves on them - I usually don't say one thing is better than the other. It's a matter of what one prefers. I think we generally like what Cat/Yusuf do better than we like anything else. At least I do...

Yeah - I would only make that comment here. To each their own..
and whoever disagrees with me is just plain wrong ;D

Guess we're just spoiled to our one and only. I prefer Yusuf's versions of Yusuf's songs! ;D I just happen to like songs by original artists, I'd say, 99% of the time. Don't want to seem closed minded.

Well, that rendition of CS's song could have been a little more upbeat by Mr Costello, I never know what people mean by "upbeat", since it can mean a song is faster and has more of a beat, or it can refer to mood, a happier sort of song. If you meant the latter, well, "Sitting" is a pretty downcast, dire sort of song to begin with. Anyway, what a great song for Elvis to cover! My computer doesn't handle audio, but I'm sure it's very interesting!

We were on vacation a couple weeks ago, and in our hotel room we watched that movie "The Invention of Lying." It was rated PG, I think, so I was unprepared for a few scenes that you wouldn't necessarily want to watch with a 12- and 14-year old ::sigh:: but otherwise I really liked it. And when that song came on I just about went NUTS! I told my hubby, OMG, what a great song! He correctly identified it as Elvis Costello . . . he's smart like that but then I said, I bet you can't tell me who did it originally! And I was right, he had no clue. I'm keeping my Cat obsession on the down-low.
