I'm age 57. Since the 70's I've been haunted by the interlude in "18th Avenue" - especially the last 6 measures. So, I bought the CD format last year. hope I can find/create a ring tone ...
I'm not intimate with all Cat's music, but a huge fan of what I've heard.
God Bless

What a cool ringtone that would be, Clyde! I've always thought that that instrumental bridge in " 18th Ave" was very Yanni-esque. I'd been listening to Yanni for several years before I'd ever heard Cat's " 18th Ave", and that's the first thought that struck me when that particular section played. Obviously, Cat's music influenced Yanni and his compositions (I'm assuming that, although I've never read it anywhere). Gotta love those Greek boys and their music! P.S. Welcome to Majicat, Clyde!

It starts off very dramatic...then softens. Here in New Zealand, that dramatic start was the opening music to a weekly documentary program. That guy (the presenter of the doc) had great taste in music. Linda PS welcome.

I've always thought that that instrumental bridge in " 18th Ave" was very Yanni-esque. Absolutely.. I new I had heard that somewhere else. That's one thing about cat's albums, they were always ahead of their times.. i think Foreigner is another example of some music that was ahead of its time.

That instrumental break was one of several brilliant ones that were out at the time. Offhand, the others I can think of are in "Burn Down The Mission" by Elton John/Bernie Taupin, and "God Bless The Child" by Blood Sweat and Tears. Another near-instrumental that comes to mind, where that moody/euphoric feel is throughout rather than just in an instrumental break in the middle, is "Corazon" by Carole King.
I haven't heard that much of Yanni, but his music so far seems to me to be a lot of bluster without the level of emotion that CS or any of the above artists have in their music. I may not have heard the right stuff of Yanni's I suppose.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the title of the song is referring to?
I used to think it was about a bad concert experience in Kansas city, but a few years ago I heard about a bar in NYC called Max's Kansas City that was around in the late 60s and 70s. A lot of singers of the time hung out there and I wondered if this song referred to the bar rather than the city. Has CS/YI ever said anything?

Max's Kansas City in the early 70s was the hip place for every rockstars, groupies, journos, drug dealers etc etc and if not in 18h avenue, it was in t 213 Park Avenue South, between 17th and 18th Streets, in New York City no doubt Cat was hanging around there too Its happening, man! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max's_Kansas_City www.maxskansascity.com

When I was a teenager listening to this song, I would lay back close my eyes, and visualize CS on the big screen. 18th Avenue would be part of the film, with CS having the leading role. The magnificant interlude you talk about, would be the part when he would walk out of the bar, slightly dazzed, gets into a taxi, tells the driver to race as fast as he can to the airport. Beads of perspiration on his forehead, checking his watch, cab stops, pays his cab fair, grabbing his bags, the running begins in the airport to get to the desk to check in. Checking his watch, ticket in his hand, the running begins again to head for gate 22, gives his ticket to the stewardess, walks into the tunnel to board the plane. He finally gets to his seat, and seats himself down. He has a window seat, he leans his head on the window pane, rolls his head gently and gazes out watching the runway lights flashing, then plane lifts off, throws his head back, sighs deeply, closes his eyes and the music slowly fades out. I used to do this with other CS songs too. I think there are alot of CS songs that you can imagine being part of movie scenes. He has always said they tell a story. Can you imagine if they make a movie about his life, they won't have to write a new music score for the film, nothing would more appropriate than CS own music. It could even be in the style of a musical. Imagine, from "I'm going to get me a gun", "Mona" through to "Footsteps in the Light", then to "Boots and Sand". Sorry, just dreaming, and getting carried away a little. ;D But you never know.

You're not getting carried away lol I often visualize different scenes and scenarios to Cat's music- 'Freezing Steel' always has conjured up some interesting ones and also 'Longer Boats' lol
His music just seems to have that magical effect on people.

18th Ave ( Kansas City Nightmare) is about a bad acid trip. Heard it from the horses mouth at a concert (Newcastle upon Tyne) in '74.

Vicki, Cat may very well have told zoot, or zoot may have heard it via someone else who heard it from the horses mouth! You really never know... Of course, zoot may well have been on acid himself at the concert and talked with the horse who told him this - it could have been Mr Ed! Maybe Mr Ed was a big Cat fan and was seated next to zoot. They could still be buddies! Hopefully zoot will let us know... And hopefully no-one will take me seriously (including zoot) - I'm just having fun

Hey ho Vicki - I was born in a strange funny mood You're right all the same though and not only that, it's probably the sleep I'm on and I badly need some good quality high... maybe I'll go talk with Mr Ed myself... well, I'm off to bed and hopefully to sleep - I've actually crashed from all my busy-ness the last 'phew' days heh heh. Sleep is where I'm most likely to catch up with Mr Ed anyway, so off I go. G'noyt fr'm Or-stroylia myte! N.B. For those reading this who need a translation ;D the last line reads - 'Goodnight from Australia my friend (um, I mean 'mate') hee hee har har.

Jonathanjzero - Hope you're not the official Majicat welcomer because it's not really your forte, is it? In my neck of the woods, the term 'from the horses mouth' is a common one. I apologise if I gave the impression that he said this to me on a one to one basis, it was between the songs banter. Also, he stopped playing half way through 'How Can I Tell You' and said this to those taking photos: 'Please, stop flashing. That's one thing that really annoys me'. Jonathan, just to clear things up; I wasn't on acid and I wasn't talking to horses, and thanks for making me feel about as welcome as a fart in an astronaut suit.

Thank-you Joni and Cristalina I appreciate your support and your helpful clarification of my words - their content and intentional light-hearted humour. Zoot - no, I'm not officially anything here at majicat. As for the 'horses mouth' and it's intended meaning by someone in 'your neck of the woods'? You don't say where this is. However, I don't see how it should be different to what it typically would mean. In this instance, I did presume that you meant Cat himself. And if, as you say, it was 'between the songs banter' (which I took to mean, his banter between songs), then it still would have been from the horses mouth! So, I'm not sure what you're point is with that. I can well see that you're ultra quick to quip your sarcasm without a second thought. If you could read my reply as it was intended, you'd clearly see that I was mostly making fun of myself. It's a sad fact of life... people misunderstand or are misunderstood (much too often) and I know even the most innocent loving remark can be misconstrued. So, I added that sentence at the end (for exactly the reason it's become necessary - quite ironic) - I really didn't think that it would be necessary, but put it there just in case... (something inside me must've sensed what was coming)! So, either you ignored the whole of that reply and therefore completely missed that last line (which includes your name no less!) or, something else is going on. I know this - I didn't make you feel unwelcome whatsoever, you did that all by yourself!
