We all have our favourite underrated tracks. "Obscure" fave tracks for me and I refer to songs that weren't hit singles or got much critical acclaim:
Never, Portobello Road, Grandson, Wigwam, View From The Top, Where Are You, How Many Times... there's a much longer list but these immediately spring to mind. The entire Foreigner set is massively underrated I'd say. Definitely I Think I See The Light.

Definatley 'father' from Back to earth, Where are you?, 100 I dream, Foreigner Suite, Novim's nightmare, Drywood, How can I tell you?, and the list just goes on and on till seems that you can't get off...

There are so many. Every track on Mona, Tea, Teaser, and Buddha that wasn't a single. Most tracks that weren't singles on Catch.
Also Portobello Road, Where Are You, Foreigner Suite, How Many Times, a few songs on Numbers, Daytime, The Artist, Never, Don't Be Shy, I've Got A Thing For Seeing My Grandson Grow Old, The Day They Made Me Tsar, I Want To Live In A Wigwam, If You Want To Sing Out Sing Out, Honeyman, The Joke, and of course 100 I Dream.

Tea For The Tillerman... I absolutely love this little song. I agree Tea for the Tillerman and Bitterblue are under-rated. They are pure class. I also think 'Silent Sunlight' is under-rated, I totally love that song yet I still haven't worked out what it 'really' means

Bitterblue is extremely underatted hmmmmm I would feel that "How can I tell you" and "If I laugh" are fairly neglected. But then it comes down to personal preference doesn't it? The radio stations can't (although there should be a law making them!) constantly play Cat's songs 24/7. I also agree portabello road is perhaps one of the best songs he has sung but its not nearly as remembered as it should..... Tea for the tillerman the song is hardly ever remembered.

I only know what was popular in the 70s, not for fans now... and the ones FM played a lot, besides singles, were Where...Play, Miles From nowhere (big on college stations in 1970 I heard somewhere), If I Laugh, and especially the livelier ones: Bitterblue/Tuesday's Dead/Angelsea.
Under-rated or less known?
Mona, whole album, doesn't get enough recognition, since those are his best along with Tea for me.
I Think I See... and Jzero should have been singles.

everyone's choices are nice I must reinforce "100 I dream" since it's my personal favorite... wigwam seems nice too ...ah I give up...it's the whole body of work! Hopefully this won't be true for long, though.

"Can't keep it in" never gets mentioned but it's one of the first Cat songs I heard and is still one of my favourites. Maybe not the best lyrically but I think it is so full of energy, and totally different to any other of his songs.

Into White comes to mind for me. I've always dearly loved that song, but with so many other great songs it often gets lost in the shuffle. Takes me right back to 1970, when I was the age my son is now.

Mona Bone Jakon is a great album. My favorite cut is Lilywhite. I find it beautiful, lulling and relaxing; almost hypnotic.

There needs to be a radio station that plays more of his music that's not main stream... I always wanted a coffee shop so I could have breakfast with Cat Stevens music for all my customers...

I have always loved Sun/C79. The passionate explanation of why his sons are who they are is an emotional outburst that goes right to the heart.

Seems like if it's not on his first greatest hits Cd ( here in the USA)... Then it's not played on the radio... So what's that 95% of his music is under rated, give or take a percentage point or soooo

The most unterrated?
All I can say is that The Boy With The Moon & Star On His Head is a very special one!
A great storytelling song like One for the Vine by Genesis...and just 4 minutes shorter ;-)

The Boy With the Moon and Stars on His Head would make a great movie as would Indian Ocean... These two songs are of similar style in some respects...

Listening to "Boy With Moon & Stars", I was wondering if he's speaking from experience. Was he supposed to get married back then, or is it just a story about someone he knew or just made up.

Hi Ruins,
indeed, Ruins IMHO is underrated. I remember when I heard it first: I only knew until then (mid of eighties) the three big LPs Mona, Tillerman and Teaser, but then I bought Catch Bull At Four and was absolutely astonished, I never heard one of these great tunes ever before. When it came to the end and Ruins began to play it touched me like Trouble did in Harold and Maude (unforgettable scene with his mortuary E-Type dashing down the cliffs).
The theme from Ruins (sb is coming back to the place where he lived years before) is well known from other artists, I think for example at Il Ragazzo Della Via Gluck performed by Adriano Celentano in the seventies, too, or Le Retour Du Flâneur of Beau Dommage, a group Québécois I appreciate a lot.

My all time favorites are not mentioned , so here I go, "Kypros " It so imotive I feel Im in Cyprus dancing at a greek cypriot Wedding or party," Crazy" makes you remmember that great feeling, when you met the love of your life. "New york" spot on for the living pulse of this wonderful City. " Caritas" Again you could be at a taverna with such good company food and wine listening and dancing to this, such passion "Bad penny " Just a fab song, Actually I have put all of Yusuf's /Cat's songs on my Ipod, There are No songs that I would skip, He sooths my soul
