I'm procrastinating on a project - and when I'm supposed to be working on something I always get the coolest ideas for other things. So here's the latest. Say you're sitting in front of a computer or other device with every single Cat/Yusuf song available. Which song would you pick to play under the following circumstances? 1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. 2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. 3. You're happy and want to dance. 4. You're starting something new. 5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. 6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. 7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. 8. You're drunk and goofy. 9. You want to engage your children. 10. In your car, you want to sing along. Answer them and add your own "what if." I will answer mine and look forward to answering yours!

1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. --Right now I'd have to say my favorite is "The Hurt," because it's such a great way of looking at the hard times that happen to us. Kind of makes you *want* to get hurt, just so you can increase in your wisdom. 2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. --I'd pick "Everytime I Dream" not because it's the best from the whole collection, but because it's my favorite of Yusuf's new ones and proves he's still awesome. 3. You're happy and want to dance. --hands down, "Can't Keep it In." "Angelsea" makes me wanna boogie too. 4. You're starting something new. --On The Road to Find Out. 5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. --"Another Saturday Night." 6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. --Foreigner Suite or Into White. 7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. --"How Can I Tell You" 8. You're drunk and goofy. "Banapple Gas" or maybe "Longer Boats" 9. You want to engage your children. My kids are 12 & 14 and very much attuned to new pop/rock stuff, so it's hard to get them to like Cat/Yusuf and I've almost given up trying, but my son does kinda like "Was Dog a Doughnut." Especially when I've told him about the history of synthesizers & music, and the whole MOOG movement. It appeals to the whole nerd aspect. 10. In your car, you want to sing along. Moonshadow. Except it's a little bit low for me.

OK, you asked for it! Here goes:
1. All time favourite song. "Sitting". It's the one that made me realise the sheer, utter genius of the man and I absolutely love it.
2. "First Cut is the Deepest" - in the unlikely event you could find anyone in the world who hadn't heard it!
3. Happy and want to dance. "Tuesday's Dead". It never, EVER fails to make me smile, no matter what else is going on in the world.
4. You're starting something new. "Foreigner Suite". I have to feel reasonably "balanced" before I can cope with this, since it tends to rip me to shreds, but I also find it very inspirational.
5. Working out at the gym. Completely agree - "Another Saturday Night" or "Honey Man" - something unlikely but faster-paced.
6. Last thing to hear before you turn out the light - "Drywood".
7. First dance - yes, completely agree again "How Can I Tell You?"
8. In a silly mood (alcohol-induced or not!) ... has to be "Banapple Gas", because I remember so well how we were all told in the 70s that if things were manufactured, they had to be better for us. Fortunately, as a world, we've wised up a little!
9. Well, I discovered "Father and Son" on my older daughter's iPod, so I guess this must be some indication! I would think something like "The Hurt" for teenagers, although that might be a Mum perspective! Number 2 daughter loves "Changes IV", so I must have done something right!
10. I regret to say that I sing along to everything. Really badly. Hopefully with the windows shut! But I particularly love "Music"... though you wouldn't know from listening to me massacring all those wonderful songs!
And the last one: You want to cheer yourself up...
Thanks for coming up with this, Peacock; I've really enjoyed doing it. Not so sure that anyone will enjoy reading my ramblings, though...

What a fantastic and fun idea for a thread, Peacock! Here are my choices: 1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. "King of Trees" (But, boy, talk about having to choose from among vast riches!) 2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. "Into White" (Such a clever concept... Such 'visual' lyrics.) 3. You're happy and want to dance. "Tuesday's Dead" (I'm with Jo and Viv on this one.) 4. You're starting something new. "On The Road To Find Out" (Couldn't agree more with Peacock on her choice.) 5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. "Banapple Gas" ("Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah..."!) 6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. "Silent Sunlight" ("Sleepy horses...") 7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. "How Can I Tell You" (Yeeesss Sireeee: Perfect!) 8. You're drunk and goofy. "Bring Another Bottle" (With you, baby!) 9. You want to engage your children. "I Want To Live In a Wigwam' (A very infectious and fun song.) 10. In your car, you want to sing along. "Changes IV" (I sound really good in the shower beltin' this one out... not so much in my car.) -Bud

What a great topic- I have been thinking around this all day. It was hard to coose sometimes as you can see by the fact that often I could only narrow it down to 2 songs.
Here are my choices:
1. Someone asks you for your favorite song.
‘The Wind’- I agree with Bud almost an impossible choice , but this is the song that really made me listen to Cat and apart from everything else it evokes such poignant memories.
2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before.
‘Father and Son’ – It is a masterpiece.
3. You're happy and want to dance.
‘Tuesday's Dead’- my body cannot be still with this song
4. You're starting something new.
‘To Be what you Must’- I find this song very inspirational -or ‘I wish I knew’
5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical.
‘Miles from Nowhere’- I love the song, so it might distract me from the pain of the gym. It also gives me permission to ‘take my time’ as I am miles away from any kind of fitness!!
6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. ‘Katmandu’- soooo peaceful
7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. ‘Fill my Eyes’-this song has always made me think of my love!
8. You're drunk and goofy.
Another Saturday Night-or if it’s Karaoke night ‘Pop Star’
9. You want to engage your children.
‘The First Cut is the Deepest’- that is the one I caught my teenage son out with. He is not keen on the Cat (mainly I think because he feels his mother is way too much into music for an old woman who should not be seen dead on fan sites etc!!!!) But when I played him this he was adamant this was a cool song by Sheryl Crow! ‘Wild World’ is also a good one to engage teenagers, a bit of a teenage anthem after its success as part of the ‘Skins’ TV series
10. In your car, you want to sing along. Would have to be ‘Foreigner Suite’, when I sing along to that it has to be solitary in the car-the emotion is real but the sound cannot be inflicted on anyone else!!!

1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. Foreigner Suite
2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. Sitting or Changes IV
3. You're happy and want to dance. Rubylove
4. You're starting something new. Whistlestar
5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. O'Caritas
6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. Katmandu or Shamsia
7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. Bonfire!
8. You're drunk and goofy. Banapple Gas or Ready (ha ha)
9. You want to engage your children. Here Comes my Baby
10. In your car, you want to sing along. Later or Two Fine People or Changes IV or...this was too hard!

1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. "Ruins"- This is such an emotional song which is so relevant to this day- it's gotta be my fave atm
2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. "Father and Son" - I have to agree with everyone else on this one- it is such a timeless classic which represents his music better then any other song I can think of.
3. You're happy and want to dance. "Land of Freelove and Goodbye" - I love this little song and it always makes me want to to kind of dance.
4. You're starting something new. "Lilywhite"- There are so many to choose from including "On the Road to find Out" "Miles from Nowhere" "Sitting" etc but Lilywhite always seems appropriate to me because of it's reference to the "wheel of change."
5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. Umm I would probably choose something loud or upbeat- Sitting comes to mind but I reckon anything from Miles from Nowhere to Freezing Steel would be great.
6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. "Katmandu" this song always sounds so quiet and sad in a way, it's got a haunting beauty about it. I often do listen to this song before I drop off! "Into White" is another one I love for this.
7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. This is a tough one because like everyone else I'm inclined to select "How can I tell you" (I'd use the live version from the Majikat CD) but I'm currently trending toward "Two fine people" I just think it sounds so perfect for the occasion.
8. You're drunk and goofy. "Laughing Apple" - I think any of his earlier songs would fit here, but this one always makes me laugh.
9. You want to engage your children. Like s271 I don't have kids but do have little brothers and sisters- they've all seemed to like the Moonshadow cartoon off of Teaser, so I'd probably pick "Moonshadow."
10. In your car, you want to sing along. "Ruins" I love how loud this song gets in the climax and I think it's perfect to sing along to- "Just keep on walking on down street, keeeep you distance from the people you meet oh lord and you better watch your eyes, cause if the smoke gets in them you won't rise again!" Love it!
11. You want to direct a music video. Hehe... "Bad Brakes" Wouldn't this be a great one to do, I can just picture Yusuf behind the wheel now!
And for my one....
12. A song which you wish had been selected a single or had received more air time or focus so that it could be considered a classic For me it would easily have to be Katmandu, such a beautiful song but so under appreciated.

4. You're starting something new. not sure
5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. I Think I See the Light
6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. Greenfields, Golden Sands
7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. How Can I Tell You
8. You're drunk and goofy. Moonshadow
9. You want to engage your children. I don't have kids
10. In your car, you want to sing along. 100 I Dream - I do this and turn it up very loud!
11. You just need to feel better, for whatever reason. Fill My Eyes

I became a big fan of the Cat in early 1972, because he had a marvellous voice that made us women go wild. Here's a selection of favourites starting with:
1. Where Do the Children Play, a song which talks about our children, changing from day to day.
2. Hard-Headed Woman, favourite song which my Mum likes, talking about his search to find someone to take him for himself.
3. Wild World, a song which talks about what this world is like today
4. Moonshadow, the optimist anthem
5. Don't Be Shy, a song taken from the film Harold and Maude, with the message for those to lift their heads.
6. Roadsinger, a song which tells the tale of a man, coming to town, wearing his long cape and hat, and the people stood and stared and shut their doors, as he passed.
7. Lilywhite, a song with the most beautiful lyrics, which have the line "Back upon the mended road I pause
8. All Kinds of Roses, a spiritual song, featuring the lines "There's only one God has a place in my heart."
9. The Wind, which states to this "I listen to the wind, to the wind of my soul, where I'll end up, well I think, only God really knows.
10. Just Another Night, an interesting tune, which brings back the time when Cat was a pop star for a one year period, and that of course destroyed his musical career, until two years later. Fans waited eagerly for him to come back, and come back, he did!! A new look, a more gentler image, and sweetness of his persona, capturing our hearts

Here's a few more from this page:
11. Daytime is another song about the children, with the lines that say it all "And the love of a child, it's the time of the year.
12. Blackness of the Night was one of Yusuf's favourites, telling a story about when he seemed to wander endlessly, with no-one by his side. Meaningful lyrics.
13. On the Road to Findout is a religious number, with the line that reads "Kick out the devil's sin, pick up, pick up a good book, now. I remember on the TV program "Imagine, with Alan Yentob, he mentioned in the interview he was "just talking about the power of a good book"
14. Tea for the Tillerman, the title track on that album, features the lines that read "Seagulls sing your hearts away, 'cause while sinners sin, the children play. Oh lord, how they play and play for that happy day, for that happy day. Very spiritual.

Sure, Bud, if you also wanted it to be your LAST dance with her. True enough, Peacock! ;D Such a very first wedding day dance would have won me a well-deserved series of swift kicks to the knees. Well, unluckily, I have never been married, but if I were (yet) to be, I would surely pick a more 'positive' Cat or Yusuf tune (something I feel would be quite easy to do). -Bud

1. Someone asks you for your favorite song. It simply can't be answered, since there can be no favourite Cat song! However, at the moment I'd have to say Majik. 2. You want to convince someone to love Cat/Yusuf, who's never heard his music before. Don't Be Shy. So far, I've never met anyone who hasn't found this song amazing. 3. You're happy and want to dance. Doves, of course! Such a catchy tune! I might go with New York Times aswell, but I'd choose Doves. 4. You're starting something new. Definately Foreigner Suite. Just listening to that song and really listening to the lyrics is a really great way to find out about your ideals. 5. You're working out at the gym on the treadmill or elliptical. Bad Brakes! 6. You're sleepy and it's the last thing before you turn off the music and lights. Boy With A Moon And Star On His Head. It's a great song to fall asleep to and it works pretty well as a bedtime story too. Not your traditional bedtime story, though. 7. First dance at your wedding, with just you and your spouse. Bonfire. Don't know why, it would just fit best as a tune for dancing at a wedding. 8. You're drunk and goofy. Banapple Gas. Pretty goofy song, but darn good one. 9. You want to engage your children. Father And.. No wait, what if I have a daughter? ... If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out! That will show them. 10. In your car, you want to sing along. Miles From Nowhere. Great singalong tune. Overall song to make me feel good = Tuesday's Dead!
