Hello, everyone.
The closest I can figure, in phonetic English, it's something like:
"Kadesapolis, malegbah."
Does anyone out there know for sure? (With all due respects, I don't think it's about Carly Simon saying anything.)
Later, Kevin

Well basically, from Yusuf, himself, it's gibberish. Really has no meaning at all. Just sounds good.

I'll bet it meant something emotionally when he was singing it. It worked.

I know this is an old thread, but I felt silly to write what I thought the chorus says, as Vivian gives an explanation. The song was written for Carly Simon, so I thought the chorus went like this.....
Carly Siimon, Carly Siiigh, Carly Siimon, Carly Siiigh....

Not sure what the words are but they sound fitting...back in the day ,before Cat was banned (when Father heard Longer Boats!!!) wh'enever he did the 'no words' thing family (not fans) used to tease me and say he did it because he could not think of anymore lyrics!!! How very dare they!!... Some photos I had not seen before in this vid..nice :)and another burst of Angelsea never does any harm...

I too have always been curious about the chorus to this song....I pride myself on knowing every word to every song and this one has stumped me all these years! Hey, I know, why doesn't somebody ask Yusie?? He'd be the one to clue us in! I'll stay tuned to see what happens! PS And about the new album title....I think he may be trying to tell us something! He always said "just listen to the words". *sigh* I still can't wait to hear it though! And a couple of concerts would be sweet as well!! Bye y'all!!

Interesting thread. I've got to say, in my opinion only -- Angelsea would be a great great great song if it weren't for the high voice in the chorus. The vocal is not focused -- I'm not sure how to explain it: it's just out of sync with the song.
Anyone else ever notice this?

Hello, and welcome!
Interesting observation. I've definitely recognized the presence of the high vocal in the chorus but didn't really give it much thought before. It almost sounds childlike in quality. The chorus has many different types of voices in it; kind of a world choir quality, which is cool. I think I prefer that to other artists who overdub their own voices as a chorus or background vocal. For instance I'm a fan of Steve Perry, but in many of his solo songs in particular he overdubs his own voice (which I love), but it sounds like a chorus of like 10 Steve Perrys!
I am always drawn to the "yaya" background vocals in some versions of Lady d'Arbanville however. Very noticeable and I can't help but sing along with the "yayas", maybe because I am an alto/(contralto) so I fit in more with those vocals than the high voice in Angelsea.

Yes, I like the varied background singers but I hear that one voice too much. It's such a different type of song for him. I can't really place a specific style or spirituality to it. And it's got both serious and playful -- almost silly -- lyrics and annunciations as well. By the way, I am so glad to communicate with people who know this wonderful subject (Yusuf/Cat Stevens) on such a deep level. I'm starved for that as my husband friends have their own favorite/deep subjects that they focus on.

It's a pleasure to talk with you. It's always nice to welcome a new member who brings us new observations to think about. There's a lot here on the forum that I learned from members both old and new.
I am always amazed at the depth of many of Cat Stevens' early songs; he was so very young when he wrote them. And to hear him sing some of them today, they are still very meaningful and pertinent. So glad he came back to share his music with us again!
Going back to Angelsea, does anyone know what the instrument is at the very end? Most likely a synthesizer. It almost has a theramin sound to it.
