It's pretty established by now, and confirmed by Yusuf on TV if I'm not wrong, that the chorus keeps repeating "Carly Simon" over and over again.

I'm hearing just a different pronunciation of the song title, instead of Angel-sea, they're chanting an-ggel-ee-sah with the 'a' sound almost a 'u' - ung-ggel-ee-sah.

I hear Calissa Kunis with the accent on the "sa" of Calissa.

Hi Angelsea
I happen to be watching some lectures on quantum theory and biocentrism while learning this song. Then I realized that this song is about the same thing. Quantum theory suggests: "nothing actually exists until it is observed" Biocentrism theory suggests: "consciousness as the basis for the universe, rather than consciousness simply being its by-product"
Angelsea means universal consciousness.
You have beautiful name.

Quantum Mechanics 101. "Seven evening stars" = classical solar system. "dance thru the window of her universal house"= threshold of universal consciousness. "her voice a crystal echo" = all matter and energy are waiting vibrations. "So patiently awaiting for your ears to behold" = to become real only when they are observed. "She ripples on the water" = waves of probabilities "Leaves diamonds on the shore" = create reality "Fish from every distance watch her ocean cellar door" = for all living things (biocentrism) "A mistress to magicians" = is quantum entanglement a magic trick? "and a dancer to the gods"= or gods entertainment? "My conscience will follow you forever if you meet me everywhere" = consciousness creates reality everywhere. Therefore, Angelsea = a celebration of universal consciousness. (never mind that its among his first use of the "electron" synthesizer)

Cat's inspiration for Angelsea was my wife Angie, who had a 4 year relationship with him between 1970 and 1974. They used to meet at Cat's father's restaurant next to the Moulin Rouge in London and (often) at Cat's house set in Fulham.

well, quoting didn't quite work for me but i meant to say, great breakdown GeoKap, I've always thought Cat's "Carly Simon" explanation was just a joke

I still think the chorus is:_ "kumbalissa oh yes, kumbalissa".

To me it was always "Poofta-le-quah coreizon, boompa-le-quah". Puzzles me for 40 years now. (btw if anyone comes along who's into obscure home recordings - here's my share: www.besserezeiten.de/SCC/index_int.html)

It is as follows:
Oh Carly Simon answer Oh Carly, Why?
Listen to it with these phrases and it all makes sense.

For me, for forty-some years, it's been "Boompahlic CYcle, it's an oopahlic waaaah . . . ."
Fer sure
Love GK's physics universality, the real Angelsea's story, Trini's version, and Dave Rigley's wife's part in the story.
Super fun listening to the (final 3 songs of the) alblum side over and over and reading all posts starting in 07. Thanks, gang.

What a treasure, Angelsea. Always uplifting, taps into the mystic for me. Always loved the chorus, no idea what the words were, my soul danced and still does. The first music my daughter heard, was me humming "Morning has broken", when I first held her about an hour after she was born, that was thirty yrs ago. When I'm feeling blue and alone, Cat's "Trouble", eases the pain. Thanks.

Greetings All ! Paul Peterson, you have a sharp ear, heavy sight, and a heavy mind. That's exactly as my wife and I heard it. We named our daughter(now 32) ANGELESA GRACE. IT pronounces like "Angelisa". I just transposed 2 letters. The Boy with The Moon and star... "LOVE", was all he said. I read a story about the Apostol John when he was so old that he had to be carried in before Church Congregations to speak. His only words were..."Love" .

So I'm not the only one who has wondered about those lines. I had wondered if the words were gibberish and that seems to be the consensus. Anyone notice that this thread is alive and well after 12 years?

If you google 10 bulls of zen, you will discover that Stevens wrote one song on this album to correspond with each stage of ones journey to self-awareness. Song three is Angelsea which corresponds with the third stage of Zen, perceiving the bull....The rest you have to figure out yourselves because i'm tired of trying to explain it. Give you a clue though: Song eight, O Caritas, is about reaching Nirvana. The ego must die before that happens. That is why "those who are to perish, salute death.."

i love this song and i regard cat as a great musician and wonderful person . one time i was so frustrated about the meaning that i bitched till they brought me to him and i asked cat, and he said something like ~what does it sound like to you~. and i said "reach out inside your head, reach out inside?" and he impetuously said "yes". i swear i don't know if he meant yes yes or just that he was just saying that to calm me because he wanted to keep it a secret.. god bless you yusef, cat.

Well, darn it, the mystery still goes unsolved. I wish he or Linda Lewis (whose voice figures prominently in that chorus) would speak up and give us a clue.
