I have heard diverse meanings to this song, but the one that stands out the most, was hearing this song was written by Cat after seeing a ghost in his house in London. Stories can be made up, but just my curiosity!
Thanks, Kristen

One of my favorite Cat songs, ever! For me, it was about a woman/girl he was trying to reach out and love, yet because of some past hurt, she had built walls, as we all do at times, and he could not get through to her. Even though she wanted to let herself love him, and let him love her, she was afraid of being hurt again. She was hiding, behind tall walls built to protect her heart. I had heard the ghost tale that you mentioned, Kristen, that never really made much sense to me though. I had also heard it was about a nurse who took care of him when he was hospitalized, as well as many more ideas of what it could be about. Wait, I think he wrote it for me! Yes, that's it!

Yes, yes, that's it. I heard him distinctly say it was for you. What a lucky girl you are. LOL

Cat says in the Majicat Concert, that even though Lisa was a friend, the song was actually more about himself than Lisa. There's been tons of theories on this. Sad Lisa, is definitely one of my signature songs.

Yes, he said it was more about himself. Cat was complex to say the least.

Yes, that's quite like what the song is about to me also. The song could have a variety of meanings, but that one sure did grab my attention! Thanks for your opinions guys! Kris

It reminds me so much of a song I wrote about myself called 'Angry Ralph'. Okay okay I'm lying I have no complexities- at least no male ones I think Sad Lisa is one of his songs that actually could have made it as an instrumental. The piano in that song is just spell binding.

I wonder if Cat/Yusuf knew Elton John when he wrote this song?

I wonder if Cat/Yusuf knew Elton John when he wrote this song? Wasn't that about the time Cat and Elton did "Honeyman" together. I think they knew each other. Peace,Vivian

This was one of the first rock-pop songs I learned to play on the piano. I took lessons from a nun at an orphage in an ethnic part of town. I remember the nun looking through my Cat Stevens songbook hoping to pick the hardest song for me to play (prolly to discourage me from rock music.) She chose this song and said it had one of the most beautiful piano hooks she ever heard. After that...it was back to classical lessons for me for awhile. Studied 12 yrs with Sister Virginia (RIP).

You know in Majikat he does say it is about an original girl named lisa but it could be more about him than anything else.

Kristen caught my attention since my sister Kristen got me listening to CS, Mona and Tea, in '73 or so, and was consumed with CS and Harold and Maude for awhile. She moved on and I'm not even in contact, so I wondered for a moment. "KrispyPink" just doesn't sound like her, though.
I still remember her turning to me while playing CS and saying "I'm glad you have good taste!" She changed radically after that, and we won't be in contact the rest of our lives, but she was the one person I was really close to, so I think back on that moment a lot. We were in synch then in a way I haven't been with anyone else. Later, she went out of her way to leave behind anything from the past, me included I think, and a pivotal moment may have been when I came across Elton John, and exposed her to him, and was sneered at. People stay a mystery to me.
I felt I ought to go into all that. It seemed appropriate. I'll figure out why later.

Beautiful voice, medieval sound. The orchestration sounds very similar to CS's.
Those big black sad eyes, want to make you cry. You feel all she wants is a big warm cuddle.
