Was listening to this song yesterday and thinking what a great song it is and wondering how many times I have played it over the last 35 years or so... and it occurred to me how underrated it is. I don't think it has been selected for any of the compilation albums for example. It still brings to mind how I felt back then as a spotty teenager,in love with a girl who didn't know I existed,(some things never change).

I agree completely. Teaser was my first Cat album and is still my favorite, and since the beginning of 1972 "How Can I Tell You" and "If I Laugh" have been my two favorite Cat songs. Beautiful words and guitar.

Yeah, Acoustic Gems. Plus Poems that would stand alone without the music.

Always loved IIL. I used to do something similar when down. Just took myself back to the self I was "before the trouble". Always seemed to work. Seems to work less well now though! For some reason...
I've always especially LOVED that second instrumental bridge (?) (I think it's called). The la-la-la las....

I totally agree with you. It is this song that brought me to this side, because I was searching for some tabs... First I found the tabs, then I saw the entire side and ended up with this thread. Great, all of this. I didn't know there were other people nuts like me still listening to Cat's songs after more than half a lifetime. The tune is the special end exact answer why I like melancholy. Most people just are sad while feeling melancholy, but for me it's something that's very close to me and very true, so I feel myself better than in other circumstances, which means nothing else than to be happy. I can say, melancholy leads me to happyness, not always but very often. And when I laugh, I really forget my miserable thoughts. Oliver

I agree, it can bring a strange kind of happiness - or maybe a sense of peace. I love this song. I love how it ebbs and flows, with a very gentle rhythm - like a lullaby. ~Sun~

Your comment suncatcher makes me wonder if Yusuf ever sang this song for his children, with some lyrics changes, when they were sad or upset. If not, then maybe the grandchildren in addition to all his other later children's works.

I think this is one of Cat's best written songs musically too. The main guitar is just beautiful. You can hear Alun's back up guitar just enough to add a little fulness and the bass is barely there. Simple but beautiful. I keep one of my guitars tuned in open E and play this song at least a couple times a day.

I'd say that's too much, but the truth is, I can relate -- most CS fans probably can . . . ~Sun~
