I'm SO dismayed to have lost our CS.com sonic imagery thread.... (among many others.... ) But the BRIGHT side is that we can start ALL over again! OK... just noticed tonight listening to Bad Brakes on the drive home ... the "Spanish Lady" is accompanied by the sound of castanets. Never found much sonic imagery in his new music... (hint, Yusuf... we need more sonic imagery!!!!)

what does sonic imagery mean? is that when the voice (or the instrument sound) reflects the words?

what does sonic imagery mean? is that when the voice (or the instrument sound) reflects the words? yeah... like a sound that represents that feeling.... like c-o-l-l-d floor... (sounds cold) or a tinkling sound to represent the lightness of snow falling... or a thud sound to represent something dropping heavily... " meanings just dropped to the ground.. "(THUD)... etc. not words... just the way the words are sung/spoken, or the way a certain instrument is used to convey that feeling... or the choice of instrument for the feeling at that very moment.

Great topic, Lucy! In Into White Cat pronounces the in "water ice" very precisely, which reflects clearness and crispness, I think.
The waltz rhythm of this song reminds me of the regular movement of a slowly spinning merry-go-round or a magic lantern showing a circular chain of different pictures, both separated and connected by "... everything emptying into White". Maybe a succession of dream sequences ...
Love, Sanna

Here's one: in "I want to live in a Wigwam", when he sings "Oh I don't want to live in a barracks/ And wake up to the bugle tune" a thunderous sound is played! Another one: in "Peace Train", when he sings "Oh I've been crying lately, thinking about the world as it is".. an ugly loud sound is made... i always duck my head in anticipation

Maybe no real sonic imagery, but I've been listening to HOME for days because of the line
...you came with nothing And with nothing you'll return...
Great track!
