I've played this song for many years and I've recorded it before as well. However, after decades of lusting after a Gibson SJ200 like the one Cat plays in the "Old Grey Whistle Test" video from the early 70's, I finally own one. The first song I wanted to video-record with it was "If I Laugh"
The details of the recording are:
Lead Guitar: Gibson SJ200 Standard Rhythm Guitar: Gibson Songwriter Deluxe Bass Guitar: Rickenbacker 4003FG Microphones: Apex 435 Large Diaphragm Condenser Behringer C2 pencil condenser Preamp: Behringer MIC200 Recording/Mixing: Sonar X1 Producer Video Editing: Cyberlink PowerDirector 9
Guitar Tab Notes: Cat played this in open E tuning (E B E G# B E) on his J200. I'm not as brave as he with my J200 so I've tuned to open D tuning (DADF#AD) and capo at the second fret. Open E tuning adds a LOT more tension to the neck of the guitar and even though the J200 is built like at tank, at the price of these puppies, I'm not willing to have my new guitar implode like a box of matchsticks.
The Alun Davies part is in standard tuning and alternates from flat-picking to strumming in Alun's typically brilliant, laid-back and subtle way.

very nice drathbun! The guitar sounds gorgeous. I can see why you're a proud owner.
