Hearts of Darkness: James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Cat Stevens, and the Unlikely Rise of the Singer-SongwriterHearts of Darkness is the story of a generation's coming of age through the experiences of its three most atypical pop stars. James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Cat Stevens could never have been considered your typical late-sixties songwriters -- self-absorbed and self-composed, all three eschewed the traditional means of delivering their songs, instead turning its process inward. The result was a body of work that stands among the most profoundly personal art ever to translate into an international language, and a sequence of songs -- from "Sweet Baby James" and "Carolina in My Mind," to "Jamaica Say You Will" and "These Days," to "Peace Train" and "Wild World" -- that remain archetypes not only of what the critics called the singer-songwriter movement, but of the human condition itself. Author Dave Thompson, himself a legend among rock biographers, takes on his subjects with his usual brio and candor, leaving no stone unturned in his quest to shine a light on the dark side of this profoundly earnest era in popular music. Penetrating, pointed, and laced with vivid insight and detail, Hearts of Darkness is the story of rock when it no longer felt the need to roll.

My my, our boy looks so angelic on that book cover compared to the other two guys. JT looks positively frightening. But then, I've never cared much for JT or JB. ::shrug::

Great find, Glaucus, thank you!
I'm not a great fan of biographies (they always seem to have some criticisms, or some revelations I'd rather not have known about!). This one looks unmissable, though, so I shall have to have it!
And it has fewer calories than an Easter Egg!

Richina - I'm surprised you have room for the book with all that cool memorabilia you have. I hope I don't turn on the TV some evening and see you on Hoarders. I'll fly down there myself and save you!

Charles, you can always be depended upon for fantastic finds! This upcoming book will serve as a 'nice suffice' until Yusuf authors his memoirs (fingers tightly crossed on this hope). Thank you, Charles! -Bud

FYI, I just got the book this morning vis UPS. Geez, that was quick. At first glance, it looks like a very interesting read. Evocating chapter titles taken from songs (Wild World, Fire and Rain, On the Road to Find Out), a few black and white pix, a bibliography which includes our friend George' s book as well as Chris Charlesworth. No mention of the elusive David Evans book.
Hope I can find time this weekend to start reading it.

From what I gathered so far (diagonal reading), the author alternates artists every three chapters. But don't quote me on this, I just had a rather quick look. Also, the book covers mainly the years between 1966 and 1973.

As a part of Cat Stevens memorabilia it was worth it. The content was not.
