Hi all,
Well, I received the SACD yesterday but only had the chance to really listen hard to it today.
It's a nicely presented album and upon opening I was pleased to see the replication of the famous pink label. I well remember back in 1970 clutching my prized new album as I climbed aboard a bus to take me home. I remember wondering whether I would like it as I'd never heard any of it. I also remember looking at the length of the songs and seeing that On the Road to Find Out was over 6 minutes long and hoping I liked that because it was a lot of the album if I didn't! My album had a pink label and still does!
I was horrified though one day when I dropped the stylus on the first track resulting in a scratch that I am still aware of whether it is present or not! It is so rooted in my memory. Does anyone else suffer in the same way?
Anyway, listening to it today it certainly produced the most intimate version of the album that I have ever heard. I'd looked at a few reviews which I now feel were rather harsh, it's a well-balanced album in my view. They missed a trick though as they had the chance to remove all the analogue hiss but it's still there. Mind you I was playing it very loudly. It is the quiet intimacy of that album that I love so much. For me Mona Bone Jakon, Tillerman and Teaser are his best albums, not saying that I don't enjoy all of them but I much prefer the clean uncluttered sound of those beautiful guitars and the SACD makes the best use of that! I did feel quite moved listening to the purity of that album today and it was like the band was in the room with me!
So, if you choose to get a copy and if you are fortunate enough to have the equipment to get the best out of it then it's probably worth the high price. It's much cheaper if you live in America!
All the best,
Chris
