anyhow, it's a shame that lof those celebrities weren't recorded... for instance, we had Louis Armstrong in Belgrade in 1959... Duke Ellington in 1971... Paul McCartney and his Wings in 1976... i was about to tell a joke, but i'm afraid i would be banned

oh yeah, we had Deep Purple in Beograd, 11 march 1975, Ritchie Blackmore was still in the band, 110 decibels, people were coming out of the hall with their ears bleeding. we also had The Hollies in 1967, but you asked for the big names tho. all in all, Yugoslavia was not that isolated like other commie contries, probably coz Tito balanced between East & West, previously broke ties with USSR. but you guys had some funny times over there too back then, remember the concerts in Italia in the 70-ies? Just the other day I was listening to a bootleg of the Led Zepp concert in Milan, 1971, with the typical riots and tear gas incident, pretty wild... "Bxstardi!... Assassini!" www.led-zeppelin.com/spotlight/milan1971.html

there was a civil war in italy in the 70s
that led zeppelin concert was the first in a long series until no one came to play in italy for years
santana and chicago and lou reed concerts, around 1975/76, were all interrupted by bombs on stages
also during the cat stevens 1974 Rome concert there were riots, there were leftists groups that wanted free concerts, free music, i heard cat stevens was in real trouble that night to get to the end of the concert, thats why he didnt come back in italy during the 1976 european tour
the first one to be back in italy was patti smith, 1979; the irony is that that was patti smith last concert until the mid 90s, but for her own reasons
bob marley came to italy in 1980, playing in front of his biggest audience ever, about 80,000 people, and it was a great night of peace & music
then it was again ok to play italy, and about every rock performers would tell you now that we are the best audience in the world (springsteen said that, the stones said that and many others)
oh well, quite a story... anyway, i can tell you that we got the beatles in 1965 and the who in 1967... take that my friend :-)

From the 70's i remember few concerts which I was happy to be part of a crowd (in Zagreb) : Ike & Tina Turner, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, The Queen, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, McCartney and Wings, Eric Clapton... I missed Stones, Joan Armatrading... we were very happy in Zagreb because from the mid-70's through the 80's we saw many big stars here ("many" from our perspective)
