Thanks for the setlists. I'm posting the translation of the concert review here, also. M. posted a link to this Brazilian review on her wonderful webpage CaTNip catnip.jimdo.com/ in Behind the Fence
g1.globo.com/sao-paulo/musica/noticia/2013/11/cat-stevens-hoje-chamado-yusuf-joga-bonito-em-sua-estreia-em-sp.html
I used Google and took the liberty of making a few minor changes so it would flow better into English. Of course, this is one way inaccuracies get in place - through translations! . Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf , ' joga bonito ' [football term for ‘played beautifully’ and a pun on "jogo bonito"] in his debut in Sao Paulo.
The English singer sang about football in a show for 3000 fans on Saturday. The audience, mostly 50 years and older, sang along to 'Wild World ' and other songs . At 65, Steven Demetre Giorgiou is still singing songs with the same themes (and the very same voice) from the days when he was called Cat Stevens. In an hour and 40 minutes of thrilling show in Sao Paulo, he spoke and sang about peace, love and similar subjects . The British singer converted to Islam in 1977, departed from the artistic life in 1980 and returned to popular music in 2006 . Today he goes by the name Yusuf Islam.
For his debut in Brazil, he prepared what he said was a "surprise ." He played a new song, "The Beautiful Game " [which would be slightly different - it would be "jogo bonito".] "I created the lyrics with the help of Google translator. I hope there aren’t cover royalties for it," he said in the middle of the presentation. "It is for the World Cup next year. Everyone could come out winning, but only one will win." At the end of the song, which was not as beautiful as his other songs, he asked if his accent was ok . He smiled when the audience approved of his homage.
Repertoire with hits Yusuf began singing at 22.25 , to an audience that was still entering the Credicard Hall , mostly couples between 50 and 60 years. The official debut of the singer in Brazil was a rainy night this Saturday ( 16 ) , to just over 3000 people, according to event production . "Moonshadow " opened the show , played on acoustic guitar and voice version . Then "Where Do the Children Play ?" with the musicians, the keyboardist and drummer, slowly joining in.
The set of nearly 30 songs was quite varied. There are songs of the 60s, such as "I Love My Dog" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest." From recent discs, Yusuf had the songs "Roadsinger " , " Thinking About You ", " Midday " , " Maybe There 's a World" , " Everytime I Dream" and " All Kinds of Roses ." Memorable and uncomplicated, they fit well with the repertoire of the Cat phase.
From the album "Tea for the Tillerman ", 1970 , were the most applauded "Wild World " and " Father & Son " . As usual , the two stayed to the end . From the 1971 album, " Teaser and the Firecat ", he played songs like " Peace Train" and the aforementioned " Moonshadow” .
Love and mosquitoes Yusuf won’t have to explain every song in always serene tones. He did joke that "Midday " is about "avoiding the city after dark ", but not literally, because the show was at night. When you hear "I love you " from a fan, he also responds with love .
"You see me doing this to kill mosquitoes,” he said while swinging his hands and batting them . “If you want to, do the same," he recommended. "You have sweet blood," said one fan, in English.
Before "Maybe There's a World", he asked them to put up the lyrics so he could read. He said he remembers the old songs, but a monitor helps for singing more recent lyrics .
When speaking of "Roadsinger ", 2009, he mentions that his latest CD is still in stores. "Remember those great albums before? Ah, never mind ," he said, making it clear that he misses the heyday of vinyl .
Although he has sold over 40 million records of his own songs, his version of "All You Need Is Love" (Beatles ) was among the songs most sung along with by the audience . Maybe I just got lost last night in "Wild World”, but that song made it clear that Yusuf has a very well-preserved voice.
