Yusuf exceeds Cat Stevens in concert in Milan: the blues beats nostalgia
by:Shimmyshimmybangbang

Two-tier Concert for Cat Stevens in Milan. After a slower start and nostalgic, the second part showed great character. And much to teach. The review of the evening of November 11, 2014. Francesco Prandoni
yusuf-cat-stevens-milano-11-novembre-2014-recensione
Mediolanum Forum, Assago (Milano), November 11, 2014. It remains a question, at the end of the long concert of Yusuf Cat Stevens: is a great show but soulless involves the audience or, conversely, a performance perhaps less exciting but put in light the heart of whoever is on stage?
Cat Stevens concert begins a little after 21. Singer/songwriter comes among the cheers inside a scenography aesthetically ugly. A faux old West station stands on the bottom and a big sign saying "Milan" indicates that the Peace Train Late Again Tour the artist you're stopping right here. This is explained in the tour name, the scene and the slight delay. Above all, however, it is clear theintention of the singer: journey's end (i.e., the arrival in the station) coincides with the beginning of the concert, while the end of the concert coincides with a new route (the departure). All very Yusuf style.
The old fans (but in the Forum there are also several young) are immediately satisfied by The Wind, song of 1971 that opening Teaser and the Firecat, and Here Comes My Baby ", one of the first songs written by a young Stevens. A leap forward for 40 years, with "Thinking ' Bout You the recent Roadsinger, is only a fake, because you come back again in the late 1970s with The First Cut Is the Deepest (first Ovation). "Many people think it's by Rod Stewart, but I'm here to claim it and remind you that it is my", introduces the piece the singer. The journey in the first few years continues inevitable until Sitting and, more importantly, Where Do The Children Play?, among the most popular in the repertoire. The first part of the lineup so watch in the past tense more than recent years. It is logical, because this is so the audience has come to expect, but it is also a limit, because it does fall on the Forum a feeling of sadness rather than joy that at times threatens to reduce the attention.
View photos of the concert.
Cat in turn sings very well (the voice has not changed much compared to 40 years ago), but it is not a stageanimal. Recalls the magic of the past for those who want to fine. And so the songs flow quickly to the first real standard you would expect from an artist of her caliber. It seems strange, but it was with a cover that you begin to understand what the concept of thought concert by Stevens. "People Get Ready", presented as "waiting song of peace», is a lash that alarm the public, immediately followed by a successful mash-up between " Maybe There's A World (from Another Cup of 2006) and All You Need Is Love by the Beatles, the «my favorite group. " Yusuf sings with heart and manages to convey thatempathy that was a little before failure.
But here's a twist that no one would expect: an interval of 25 minutes. Practically aneternity. Just when he was about to take effect. Back on stage, Stevens looks like another. Or better, more than he is his music to have another step. That of the blues. It is no coincidence that the theme of this second part of the show, next to peace, becomes the slavery. Cat talks about the past, remembering that it is something that we have to be careful not to return. Dedicates a song to Nelson Mandela (Gold Digger) and shows a ball from prisoner, joking that has given him his wife before leaving for the tour.
The reality is that, regardless of everything, the second set is much more fresh than the first. And this is the concept that Stevens had in mind. «You thought of coming here just to hear what I was and not who I am now? ", seems to mean songwriter. Alongside a few older hits like Moonshadow or Sad Lisa Yusuf sings the beautiful songs of the new album "Tell 'Em I'm Gone. The blues that Stevens stages is not just the notes, but that of the heart. Big Boss Man, Dying To Live, I Was Raised in Babylon, Editing Floor Blues " are beautiful songs by an artist who still has much to say and give. The last part of the set is the most exciting, with the cover of Procol Harum (The Devil Came From Kansas), Jimmie Davis ("You Are My Sunshine"), Sam Cooke (Another Sunday Night), but also Leadbelly (the title track Tell 'Em I'm Gone "), the true father of American rock and blues son of cotton fields, when slavery was still an inalienable right of masters.
translated by Bing The closure is with Father & Son, anthem of several generations, capable of reviving a Forum never really aware of what the artist wanted and been able to tell in abundant concert two hours (excluding the range). Two bis with Peace Train , Wild World and then the train by Cat Stevens is ready to share. Milan station showed the heart. Better that or a great show? Everyone has what they prefer. Or he deserves.

This very much expresses how I felt about the London concert. The fire and passion was outstanding, particularly when performing the full new album. Amazing.

On stage a steps away from Grand place with its watch station, white fences and water tower, but the more that the whistle 21.14 a train you hear the whistling that introduces ' Peace Train Blues ': that's the train by Cat Stevens Yusuf arrived tonight in Milan, Assago Forum destination, on board nearly seven thousand people.
The delay is not a few minutes, but almost 40 years: so much time passed since the last tour of the artist before his conversion to Islam and a 30-year exile from the music. Vista much awaited Yusuf you couldn't save with the hits: so to open the date are ' The Wind ' performed vocals and guitar and ' My Baby HereComes played with his band of five elements. The first song to win outright the Forum is ' The First Cut Is The Deepest ': "many do not know that this song is mine, think of Rod Stewart," says Yusuf from the stage-tonight I claim paternity ".
And other old hits like "Where Do The Children Play? ', ' Sitting ', ' Morning Has Broken ', ' Moonshadow ' and ' Sad Lisa the most popular and critically acclaimed songs from the Forum. However, there are songs from the new repertoire, including eight tracks from latest album released in October, ' Tell 'Em I'm Gone ', performed in the second half of the concert. In over two hours of live, interrupted by a half hour break, Yusuf leaves the guitar just to go behind the piano or to take an a remarkable electric pop rock version of ' If You Want to Sing Out (Sing Out) ', or for songs blues rock of his latest work, that melancholy folk singer-songwriter from the British move the atmosphere on the Mississippi Delta, from which the fictional station appears on stage.
The voice is the same, unmistakable, never in trouble: "I adapted some songs to my lowest tone", he mocks Yusuf from the stage. The journey into memory with Cat Stevens did not end with his songs, and there is also space for the Beatles ' "All You Need Is Love ' (" my favorite song "), for the Procol Harum ' The Devil Came From Kansas" ("one of the groups I love most, we were label mates") and for the bluesman Leadbelly's ' Tell 'Em I'm Gone ' ("the first song learned on guitar"). Yusuf from the stage does not dispense only personal memories, but also messages of peace, as before ' People Get Ready ' of The Impressions, or when introducing the antischiavistico anthem ' Gold Digger ' dedicating it to Nelson Mandela. Moreover, the ' peace train ' which do you wait at the station is the metaphor on which is based the whole tour of Yusuf, but you have to wait (IA) because his arrivals ' Peace Train ', proposed in a grand finale that contains the biggest hits of Cat Stevens ' Father & Son ' and ' Wild World '.

YUSUF ISLAM (CAT STEVENS) in Milan: view photos and check out the lineup of the concert
By Davide Merli on 11/12/2014 in Live Coverage
cat-stevens
One of the legends of world music is back in Itala, in concert last night in Milan. Warm and powerful voice, crystalline guitar sounds in the foreground, lyrics of love and mysticism: these are the ingredients of Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam after converting to the Muslim faith in 1977.
Wild World, Moonshadow, Where do the Children Play, Peace Train, and Father and Son are songs that have a special place in the hearts of those who grew up in the 70, who inspires acts as the largest among the singer-songwriters of his generation, a little formal and artist of great talent.

again- no idea how to start a Vienna thread.
Thursday the Wiener Stadthalle in melancholy and nostalgia has been appeared folk - Legend Yusuf has filed the "Islam" and closed with Cat Stevens peace. The result? A two power demonstration of possibly the best active singer/songwriter of the old guard.
How many times have attitudes and moods of Yusuf aka Cat Stevens already changed over the years? You know it's not quite accurate. After the successful British musician put not only the name of Cat Stevens, but also his musical career of shelved in December 1977 after studying a Koran, nobody thought more of a comeback. In the blindest times of his life he supported the murder calls against writer Salman Rushdie, saw homosexuality as a sin and laid down even the guitar because the Western instrument not to his religious life style watch.
Personal antithesis
It has a quite Cup connotation, in this biography that his current best-selling - Tour under the banner "peace train." "Late again" trades and the now 66 Year old well ten years returning again as the folk musical enthusiastic hippie is, as he celebrated his largest success once the. In a sporty leather jacket with cool sunglasses and a visibly good mood Yusuf is the approximately 4,500 fans in the Vienna City Hall (he has now dropped the 'Islam' in the name) and thus nothing less than the personalized antithesis to his own Alter Ego.
Throughout the tour Motto according to is also the pleasant scenery. On the video screen kind of is American Western town with the Windmill, wooden barracks and dusty ground, before a truly built station hut is the appropriate plate "Vienna" with countless little details, which as much as possible the show should draw the viewer in the spell. The two parts to split Sause of grizzled, but physically obviously in top form musicians can be little wishes left – especially in the first 50 minutes convinced great hits he already produced in the course of his decades-long career.
Unchanged strong voice
It joins "here comes my baby" on the legendary "Moonshadow", he sits down at the "last love song" for the first time at the piano and is "Prakash" in a modified and updated version of the best. An always strong support - his excellently played, five-member band, which itself allows instrumental no Schnitzer and advantage brings the unusually good sound in the town hall until completely. The most beautiful but with security surprise is its security in the vocal range. In contrast to the CAWS concert by Bob Dylan in the spring Yusuf/Stevens boasts a rich and haunting vocal performance as in his best days. A rare, but all the more valuable asset for musicians in the early winter of career.
The artist himself appears relaxed, rested and with yourself in the pure. With the audience, he flirts rarely, but sympathetic--about when he returns at the beginning of the second part of the concert with a steel ball attached to a chain on the stage and stresses that after the show his wife have the reins in his hand. The Viennese audience thanks Yusuf with increasing applause, also in the spectator stands appears to have forgiven the controversial artist now all verbal gaffes.
Magnificent mixture
Purely musical there but also to complain about anything. With "Morning Has Broken", "maybe there of A world" that seamlessly integrated into the Beatles- Cover "all you need is love" goes over and "If You Want To Sing Out" seems to be fried Yusuf, but far from everything already in the first half. Even if he is in the second part, including the "editing floor Blues" or the anti Apartheid Anthem "Gold Digger" introduces his new Studio album, he remains faithful to the immortal classics. He has even his first major, 48-year-old hit in the Talon, the only few people remember back with "Love My Dog".
The versatility of the voice and the guitar playing make up the special magic of this evening. "Sad Lisa" is a Ballad of reference on piano, that famous Rod Stewart "the first cut is the deepest" "Father & son" so some even for tears gives goosebumps moments and the touching. In between, even his beloved e takes Yusuf/Stevens Guitar in hand, to at the Procol- Harum- Cover to put the rock in the foreground "The Devil Came From Kansas".
No musical derailment
"Wild World" and "peace train" the fans wait until the Encore, but that and break more than two show no wishes open. The strong song selection, mixed with the excellent sound, beautiful setting and Yusuf/Stevens provide thoughtful amazement silent presence. Whether it age mildness or simply a return to the musical values is matter in this case, because in this Constitution, the Briton is stronger than ever. Hopefully the remains "peace train" several more years on track, a musical derailment risk at least not.

He played it on the first night too. Very beautiful. He would probably classify it along with Just Another Night as a reflection on the experience of feeling deserted by his fans...a bit contorted. Watching the videos I notice how he tripped up on the rewording of Another Saturday Night in the same place as he did on the opening night. It makes me a little sad that he feels the need to reword it, in his head it obviously still plays the same as always.

Yes, I also noticed this and I don't understand why it has a need to reword "to talk to" in "to work for"... Somebody here to explain the sence? Or to try to explain? Rewording this song has sadly changed the whole context of course. It was about a fella looking for a girl to share Saturday night with, a guy with lots of money but no where to spend it..no one to spend it on...no one to 'talk to'.....re wording it into a cry from an out of work person has of course completeky changed it...guess perhaps would have been more comfortable to sing a song, out of the many many wonderful ones, that did not have to change the lyrics quite so completely!............not complaining though..just saying..

In either case, "Another Saturday Night" was a cover of a Sam Cooke song. I'm guessing the rewording with regard to an unemployed person is an attempt to update the song to current events and to fit in with the theme of the tour, freedom from oppression, etcetera.
It might be difficult to "rewire" the brain when one has sung a song so many times one way, and then in perfomance you intend to use updated lyrics; I could see a slip up happening unless you really concentrate on it. There was a bit of a slip up on lyrics during one of the recent "Sad Lisa" performances too, but I'd be happy to hear these songs despite that. For the most part he is doing a fantastic job. I've been to concerts by much younger musicians who play far fewer songs with way less emotion and intensity. I'm looking forward to seeing Yusuf in concert soon.

Trying to make sense of Yusuf rewording some songs, when he still sings 'Here comes my baby'. The the only rewording was " texting on the phone" making light of our new age technology. Maybe he is just trying to update some songs to make them identifiable for todays audiance. I feel, seeing he has come this far, there is no reason he should shy away from his past. You cannot deny your past, and the events that made you who you are today, you must be true to yourself so people will believe in you. It is very apparent now, Yusuf has slowly come to terms with his past, like he has said too, made mistakes, and who hasn't. I think he is now truly living at last. I think we can identify with 'The last love song', just to turn around the tables, we the fans, could have easily been the ones feeling deserted. The fans who deserted him were a minority, and the great response to his comeback proves that. Anyway it certainly wasn't his last love song, thank God for that.

Of course, you are right. These are just minor musings. The important thing is, Yusuf has found the confidence to use his voice and talent in full measure again. I cannot say enough how beautiful the power of his voice was at the opening concert, and by all accounts from videos and press has been in all the concerts. So grateful for that.

I don't think he's disapproving of the lyrics either, especially since they weren't his lyrics originally anyway. (Not sure, but I don't think he changed the words on the cover songs he did for the new album. He rearranged and reinvented songs and added things, like the African words and such to bring his point home.) Maybe he just did it for the sake of creativity, make a change so he's not singing it the same way he's done hundreds of times before.

In "You Are My Sunshine" Yusuf altered "Last night when I was sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken so I hung my head and I cried". There are many variations of the lyrics of this song, but it is always about a lost love. Yusuf changed it to a song about spiritual love for God, I think, with the "light entered my heart" and the "curtain blown apart". Instead of a longing for a lover, it's now a longing for union with God.
As to "The Last Love Song", I was very surprised and pleased to hear it. However, I DO think that was the last true love song he recorded, and maybe, it was written as the last long song for a particular person.
But, as Peritura said these are just musing, but fun.
Boston soon! It would be a real treat for me if he would play another love song "Maybe You're Right, Maybe You're Wrong".

Re: "Another Saturday Night" from USA today article
Yusuf had considered leaving Another Saturday Night, a Sam Cooke song he took to No. 6 in 1974, out of this tour's set list. "In the middle of that song, I'm talking about going out on the town and trying to find myself some chicks," he says. I thought, 'That's not appropriate these days,' and my wife certainly wouldn't like it. So I re-wrote those lyrics. Now I've turned it into a song about a guy who's out on the town looking for a job, and, actually, it works really well."
