Dear all,
I only post occasionally, but as you may or may not guess from my chosen name k@tmandu, I have a connection with Kathmandu, and in fact lived and worked there for 8 years. None of us can have missed the tragic news coming from the towns, hills and villages of Nepal and the devastation in Kathmandu itself has been huge. Many of the places I used to love walking through and showing my visitors are now reduced to ruins. Please help in any way you can.
I dont think he has been there, but Yusufs song about Kathmandu has made him well known there over the years, and captures something of the nature of the place. His work for humanitarian causes is also wonderful and it would be great to see this song and his connection through it with Nepal to be put to good use at this difficult time. Perhaps a rerecording for charity with some tweaked lyrics (some offered below !), or even better a 'Concert for Kathmandu and Nepal'.
If anyone has contact with Yusuf, please encourage him to consider whether he can help in any way - he must be busy and under constant request to help with different humanitarian work, but I know it would make a difference and be appreciated. Aside from that it is up to all of us to do our very best to respond at this time of such devastation - his song ruins (although about war) is also particularly poignant for me at this time
Best wishes, K@
I sit beside my home
Amidst the mire
Dark grey saddest day
This awful quake
Torn through the sky
Kathmandu, its time to comfort you
Through this strange bewildering time
Your prayer is mine
Bring me some broken wood
For our campfire
Warm light to fill the dawn
And help me see
Some hope for me
Kathmandu, who will be touchin' you
In this strange bewildering time
Let’s still the ground
Here take this hat and coat
Keys to this cabin
Your child like mine tonight
Until they go
We’ll love them so
Kathmandu, I will be here for you
Through such strange bewildering times
This is my home
