Another show I have been curious about, is the Don Kirschners Midnight Special. I believe Cat appeared on this program once or twice. I remember one such show was in 1976, but can't for the life of me remember what he sang, probably something like " Old Schoolyard".
Does anyone else remember the episode(s) of the Midnight Special which Cat may have appeared on?

I remember The Midnight Special. It came on Friday nights. Wasn't Wolfman Jack on it? I remember seeing Paul McCartney and Wings on it once or twice. Christine, "The Old Schoolyard" video seems like EXACTLY the kind of thing they would have featured, though I can't say I remember ever seeing it. But when I do see it now, that's what I think to myself -- that it looks like the kind of video they would have had on that show.

You are correct Wolfman Jack was the host of The Midnight Special until Helen Reddy and dennis Miller took it over in the very/very late 70's. After thinking about this show for a while and trying to dig up some info on it. Which I came up with zilch. I think this episode aired in the winter of 1977 and Art Garfunkle was the guest host of this particular show. As for it being the video of " Old Schoolyard". No, Cat was performing the song on stage with Alun Davies right beside him, it wasn't the promo video. It's sad there isn't a timeline of the weekly TMS shows with it's guests and performances somewhere on the net.

You could be right, it may have been Saturday Night Live. But for the life of me I always thought it was TMS. But who knows for sure, it was a long time ago. drool

The Midnight Special featured the video of Remember The Days of The Old Schoolyard. That's the only "Cat" performance on that show that I remember.

I remember it so well like yesterday. I was eighteen and had just come in from partying or something and I turned on the tube and there was Cat's "Old Schoolyard" video. I loved it.

You know, I used to watch that program religiously, and I seem to remember seeing Cat on it not just once, but THREE times! The FIRST time was a videotape of Cat in concert(yes, not ALL their performances were live on THAT stage). I cannot remember what song was performed, but I DO remember seeing Cat with his trusty Alun beside him. The SECOND time was around the same time that "Numbers" had come out, and I'd SWEAR that I saw Cat LIVE ON STAGE(NO video), performing "Banapple Gas", wearing THE infamous(and CUTE as ONLY Cat could look in such a getup)yellow and black (complete with gold shoes)suit! The FINAL time was when the video for "Remember The Days Of The Old Schoolyard" had just come out, and I first saw that video on THAT program. I remember thinking "Oh how CUTE....Cat in a kids' playground! ;D Hugs, Shirley

P.S. The second appearance(if my addled brain serves me right) WAS guest-hosted by Art Garfunkle, who DID introduce Cat by saying that he(Art) had guested on Cat's album ("Numbers"). Of course, I used to watch "Saturday Night" religiously too, and I COULD be remembering an episode from THAT show! Hugs, Shirley

Thanks Shirley, I thought maybe I was wrong since no one else seemed to remember it. But I distinctly remember Art Garfunkle hosting it, and Cat wearing the yellow and black striped sweater which he wore on the cover of his "The View From the Top" LP.
I remember watching it from a dormatory in college, with about 5 or 6 other college age girls.
So it was either Midnight Special or Saturday Night Live... Hmmm I wonder which one it was???

Old Schoolyard is probably my most favourite Cat Stevens promo! Is that Elkie Brooks singing on the Roundabout?

Yes, Wolfman Jack hosted The Midnight Special, but there was another show in the early to mid 70's called "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert". Whether Don Kirschner produced both shows, I'm not sure, but I have wondered for years whether Cat Stevens ever appeared on "Don Kirschner's Rock Concert".

I'm certain that the woman in The Old School Yard Promo is not Elkie Brooks. I think it's a model lip syncing. She is also a woman of color, where as Elkie Brooks is definitely not.

I doubt we will be seeing the likes of them again. www.historicfilms.com/news_articles/archivezone_fall_2002.html

FJS Thanks for catching this FJS and clarifying it Sanna. I've never really listened to any of Elkies music before so I hadn't really realized what she looked like. I love what she calls her fans "Elkaholics". C

Somehow I was under the impression that the Midnight Special and Don Kirschner's rock concert, were one and the same.

Find a link to someone's potted history of the Midnight Special. I remember it with great affection. Coming home from parting on a Saturday night and watching it in my bedroom. Does anyone remember Joe Walsh? Rocky Mountain Way. He was a late member of The Eagles. His concert was the first live one I ever attended. I saw him in St. Louis in 1975. He is still going today. I now live in the UK. Joe Walsh is plying in Bristol next week! FJS www.jumptheshark.com/d/donkirshner.htmwww.joewalsh.com/

I use to love Joe Walsh, I remember him from when he played with the James Gang, who use to play quite often at a bar here in town. Do you remember the James Gang? Thanks for the links.
~~~~~~~ BTW I know this is off topic FJS, but I took a peek at your website from your link on your profile, your B&B & Cabin look really inviting.
Thanks Christine. I was just thinking of JW because his name is mentioned in that blurb about The Midnight Special.
What were some of The James Gang hits? I always really liked Help Me Make it Through the Night with The Eagles.
Thanks again,
I always really liked Help Me Make it Through the Night with The Eagles. Thanks again, FJS Oh wow - Joe Walsh and the James Gang... Haven't thought about them in ages! FJ, the James Gang's best known hit was "Walk Away". There were a couple of others that I can't remember the titles of at this moment in time (although I can hear the distinctive opening guitar riff of one of them!). Now I'm going to have to go dig out my "Rocky Mountain Way and "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get" albums by Joe Walsh... ;D
